ELMORE ROY BUTLER, OF TORQNTO, ONTARIO, QANADA,;ASSIG-NOR TO' COLLASIBIE TUBES CONTAINERS, LIMITED, OF TORONTO, AvGikNAiDA.-
soar-STICK HOLDER.. I
Application led August 16, i922. SerialNo. 582,271.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMonn ROY Bu'rLiiR, a subject of the King of Great Britaimresiding in the city of Toronto, county of' York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap-Stick Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in soap stick holders, and the chief object of the` invention is to adjustably support a soap stick within a holder in such manner that practically the whole of the stick'may be used, and without any wastage of structure, and in the following specification I shall describe and illustrate the preferred embodiment Within my invention, and what I claim as new will be set forth in the claims forming part of this specification.
Fig. l is, in part, a vertical central longitudinal section through my preferred form of holder, showing partly in side elevation the soap stick held therein, and Fig. 2 is a plan' view of the preferred form ofclutch used.
In the drawings, like characters of reference refer to the same parts.
In the prior art, there is a wastage of structure, that is to say, one portion of the soap stick is permanently held in a part of the holder, which part cannot be again used, and there is the further wastage of that part of the soap so held. Now by means of my invention the soap stick can be adjustably supported, and when consumed, another Soap stick may be mounted in the same holder.
A is the holder which receives the end B of the soap stick C. D is a clamp adapted to be carried by the holder A, and the preerred manner of associating these two parts is to thread the intermediate portion E of the holder A and the inner end F of the clamp D, in a manner well-known in the art. The top of the holder A is provided with a ilarediiange G which forms a seat for the ring-clutch H. This ring-clutch is exteriorly provided at one end with a tapered or inwardly sloping seat I and at the other end with a tapered or inwardly sloping seat J, which latter seat rests against the flange or seat G. The top of the clamp D is formed to provide an in-turned ange K, which seats against the flange or seat I. The ring-clutch H is split as shown at L, and it will be understood that the soap stick C is passed through this ringclutch,and3then one end of the soap stick is inserted in the holder A, thus bringingthe tapered flange or seat J of lthe Vring-clutch Hf against the flared flange or seat G of A.the'holder A. v',The,
kto
clamp D is then slipped jover the soap stick 'A C to bring the iii-turned yflange K thereof into contact with the seat I of the ringclutch H. During the act of couplingv the clamp Dto the holder A, the ring-clutch H is snugly grasped or held between the ianges G4 andK, and thev result is that' this ringclutch will be Vcontracted and soholdthe soap stick Cfirmly in place.
Misthe cover, and the same has sliding engagementV with the wall N of the clamp D. If desired, anzannular stop O may be associated with the clamp D against which the inner end of the cover M may seat.
When the cover M is removed, of course one end of the soap stick will be exposed for use.
To regulate the distance the soap stick will project beyond the flange K,itwill only Y be necessary to remove (or sufficiently loosen) the clamp D (the cover M of course having been previously removed) from the holder A: the effect of the separation'of' the said parts will relieve the pressure against the ring-clutch H, and then by pressing outwardly against the end B of the soap stick, the desired amount of soap will be advanced beyond the said ange K. After the said adjustmenu'the clamp D will be replaced or screwed home to co-operate with the flange G to contract the clutch H.V
Although I have described my invention specifically as relating` to shaving sticks, obviously the same may be adapted successfully for use in supporting any element designed to be worn away through attrition, such as menthol pencils, lubricating sticks, and crayons, to mention merely a few articles.
The drawing illustrates the various parts o f my holder considerably exaggerated in size.
The shape and ornamentation of the holder, clamp, and cover may of course be varied as desired, and it must be understood that the disclosure herein made is merely examplary of Vthe broad invention already enunciated.
The ring clamp D and the holder A that the said ring clutch H is so held between the Y clutch expands and contracts substantially equally throughout its width and therefore firmly grips the stick C.
What I claim is:
1. A device. of the character set forth com* prising a holder adapted to house one end of a stick of material; a clamp adapted to be coupled to said holder beyond which said stick of material will project, and a split ring-clutch surrounding said stick of material and adapted to be exteriorly circumferentially constantly held at its upper and lower portions in Contact with said holder and clamp to be dominated thereby through the areas in contact substantially equally throughout its width in order to clutch or release said stick, for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the character set forth comprising a holder adapted to house one end of a stick of material, and provided at one end with a flared flange to form a seat; a clamp adapted to be coupled to said holder and beyond which said stick of material will project, and providedk at one end with an in-turned flange, and a split ring-clutch surrounding said stick of material and exteriorly provided at each end with an inwardly sloping seat, and located between the flanges of said holder and clamp, the whole adapted to co-aot for the purpose set forth.
3. A device of the character set forth comprising a holder adapted to house one end of a stick of material, and provided at one end with a flared ilangertoform a seat; a clamp adapted to be coupled to said holder and beyond Which said stick of material will project, and provided at Vone end with an inturned flange, and further provided with a wall below Said in-turned flange; a split ring-clutch surrounding said stick of material and exteriorly provided at each end with an inwardly sloping seat, and located between the flanges :of said holder andV clamp, the Whole adapted to co-act for the purposeV set forth, and a cover adapted to house the exposed end of said stick and having sliding engagement with the wall of said clamp.
