' COMBINATION CIGARETTE HOLDER AND SMOKING" TUBE.
- Application med luly'll,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnnr G. FLEMING, citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Combination Cj arette H01 ers and Smoking Tubes, of whic the following is a specification.
, .This invention relates to certain new 'and useful im rovements in combination cigarette hol er and smoking tube, and the pnmary object thereof is to provide a device which enables a cigarette to be firml supported at a distance from the smoker uring smoking thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which may be easily and quickly attached at any desired point to flat. surfaces of various kinds, for exam le table tops, beds, automobile ,windshiel s, ash trays, or other places, and which may be easily and quickly removed without damaging or marrin the surface to which the device is applie 2 The invention still further aims to provide a device of this kind wherein the cigarette is held so as to cause the ashes to be caught and thus be prevented from dropping onto the floor, and which enables the cigarette stub to be easily and quickly ejected from the holder.
Another object of the, invention is to pro,- vide an attachment in the nature of a-combined windshield and, ash collector for a5 special use of the invention in a vertical position in an automobile.
In the drawings: Figure 1, is a side elevation of the invention applied to a table or the like v Figure 2, is a front elevation ofthe clip; Figure 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Figure-2;
v Figure 4, ure 2; Figure 5, is a vertical sectional v1ew of the invention applied to an automobile wind- .shield; 1 p Figure 6, is a section hn line H of Figure 5, and v a Figure 7, is a fragmentary perspective.
is a section on line H of Figview of the invention applied to an ash stand of the self-righting type. V
In proceeding in accordance with the resent invention, a support is employed w 1011 1923. Serial no. 050,797.
embodies a substantially U-sha ed spring clip having side arms 1 formed with complementary intermediate curved parts or jaws ,2 and arc-shaped outer ends, the latter being divergently related and conjointly affording a flared mouth for the clip. The base of the clip is perforated to receive and interlock with the'head 4 of a rubber vacuum cup 5, The cup 5 is formed to engage a ainst any air between it and the sur ace so that the pressure of the surrounding air acting against the outer face of the cup, will hold the latter in position.
The cigaretae holder embodies a sleeve 6, the bore of the outer end ofwhich is flared to afford a socket to receive the cigarette and is rovided with a curved or .rolled edge] which acts to'strengthen and reinforce the holder and to also aflord means for engagement with the spring jaws 8 formed on and by slitting the lower end of a foraminous ash retaining sleeve 9. The ash retainingsleeve is particularly designed for automobile use, Figure 5, by way of example, depicting the clip attached horizontally to a glass windshield. 1 I
The holder sleeve 6 is formed with a pair of spaced peripheral flanges 10, the space in length being slightly greater than the width of the jaws 2 so as to allow the sleeve to be laced in the mouth of the clip and then moved downwardly to occupy the space between the jaws and with the flanges 10 engaging the side edges of the arms 1 of the clip. The cigarette holder 1s thus firmly flat surface with which an air-tig t seal can "be effected. The cup is de ressedto expel supported against axial movement or move disposed in the socket of 'the holder sleeve 6 and which provides an ejector means for expelling burnt cigarette stubs. The counterbore 11 receives therein a coil spring 14,
which surrounds the tube 12 and which at one end abuts the inner wall resultant from tubing 16 of desired lengthis connected to the coupling 15 and is equipped with a mouthpiece 17.
In Figure 7, the invention is illustrated in connection with the self-righting pedestal ash tray cigarette holder of my copending application for patent filedJuly 11, 1923, Serial No. 650796 and wherein the holder sleeve 6 is gripped by and between the two jaws Hand 19 and with its flanges 10, engaging the opposed side edges of the jaws. In this use ot the invention, the lighted end of the cigarette is held over the ash tray or repectacle 20, equally true of the showing of the invention in Figure 1, inwhich latter the clip is supported on a table and in overlying relation to an ash tray 21 of the table supported ty e. In both of these examples of use, ashes rom the cigarette are caughtby the tray, while in the instance of Figure 5 of the drawings, the ventilated ash-sleeve 9 collects and retains the ashes.
The invention is of special utility for smokers assuming a reclining or horizontal position, eliminating the danger of igniting bed or furniture coverings, since in the instances of use exemplified in Figures 1 blown from the cigarette, and trapping same and 7 the'lighted cigarette is held at a safe and predetermined distance from the bed or lounge.
T he spring clip is formed so as to retain the cigarette holder at such distance above the surface of a table or other support to perinit the insertion of an ash tray below the cigarette so as to catch the ashes.
11 use of the invention, as instanced in Figure 5 of the drawings, in connection with a vehicle, the sleeve 9 functions as a p as they drop.
However, it is to be expressly understood that the examples of use herein noted are to be considered as such and not as exhaustive enumeration of all uses to which the device maly be put.
't is alsoto be noted that the invention is equally susceptible of use in retaining the cigarette in either vertical or horizontal position.
What is claimed is 1.111 a combined cigarette holder and smoking tube, a. receiver, a cigarette holder,
gripping means formed to removably engage said holder, spaced flanges on the holder formed to engage opposite sides of the gripping means so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the holder in the griping means and to retain the holder with the lighted end of the cigarette in a predetermined position overlying the receiver, and a tube having one end connected to the holder and its opposite end provided with a mouth iece. p 2. In a combined cigarette holder and smokingt'ube, a receiver, a cigarette holder, means formed to removab'ly support the hglder, ineans to prevent axial movement of the holder in the supporting means and to retain the holder with the lighted end of the cigarette in a predetermined position overlying the receiver, and a tube having one end connected to the holder and its opposite and provided with a mouth piece.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ROBERT G. FLEMING.
