WOODEN VACUUM TUB FOR ICE-CREAM TUIBS.
Application filed December 27, 1922. Serial No. $9,207.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wooden Vacuum Tubs for Ice-Cream Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vacuum tubs, primarily adapted for the reception of ice cream containers, wherein the frozen ice cream will be maintainedin this state for an extended period of time, without the usual necessity of packing ice with in the tub as is now the case.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of such an article of manufacture that is of relatively simple construction, comparatively inexpensive of manufacture, and highly eflicient in the use for which it is intended.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed. I I
In the drawings forming part of this ap plication, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1is an elevational' view of a vacuum tub constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3is a vertical cross sectional view of my improved device, and
Figure 4-is a transverse cross sectional view upon the line 4. 4 of Figure 3, and looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows.
Having particular reference to the drawings, my tub consists of a wooden container 5 composed of vertically disposed staves 6 interlocked with each other through the instrunientality of the rib and groove connection 7 more clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4. Adjacent the lower end of the tub 5 formed by the staves there is an internal, annular V-groove 8 for receiving the bevelled edge of a bottom plate 9. The staves are maintained in close contact with each other, through the instrumentality of the usual metallic hoops 10, and one of these hoops adjacent the upper end of the tub is formed at diametrically handles 11. p The interior of the tub 5 has-a lining 12, which may be, and preferably is, of parafline or similar air impervious substance. Over this lining of parafine 12 is a 1ining'15of compressed cork.
opposite sides with Centrally within the tub 5, there is positioned a tubular casing 14 open at its upper end as shown and being provided adjacent this upper end with a relatively enlarged annular-shaped disk or flange 15, the marginal edge of which is adapted to bebent or flared outwardly as at 16 for engaging within a V groove 17 adjacent the upper internal end of the wooden tub 5. Uponthe bottom surface of this disk or flange 15 is a coating 18 of paralfine, together with a lining 19 of cork, this cork and parafline integrally joined at the outer edges to the upper edges of the first mentioned linings 12 and 13 of cork and parafline within the tub 5.
There is provided a wooden cover plate 20, the edge of which is formed with a V rib for engaging within the said V groove 17 internally of the tub 5, and it will at once be apparent that when this cover plate 20 is wedged within the upper end of the container, the flared marginal edge 16 of the said disk or flange 15 will be firmly retained wvithin the said groove 17 of the tub. The
cover 20 is provided with a relatively enlarged central opening and the under surface of this'opening is channeled for receiving a rubber gasket 21, and engaging with in the said opening of the cover plate is a hollow metallic cover 22 for the upper end of the ice cream container 14. This hollow cover plate 22 has a filling of granulated cork or appropriate material 23 therein, and adapted for engagement within integrally formed loop members 24 upon opposite sides of the upper hoop 10, are the opposite hooped ends'26 of a cross rod 27. This cross rod 27 is provided with a central screw threaded opening for permitting of a screw threaded bolt 28 to pass therethrough, the lower end of this bolt 28 having a head 29 formed thereon for contact with the cover plate 23 for consequently forcing this plate 23 downwardly, and securing the same upon the upper end of the ice cream can container 14. For permitting of the screwing of this screw threaded bolt, the same is formed with a wing nut 30.
Extending through an opening in the side wall of the tub, and also through the linings 12 and 13 of paraffine and cork is an air outlet nipple 31 having any desired form of check valve 32 therein, and it will at once be apparent that when the tub is constructed as shown in the several Views, by applying an exhaust pump to the air outlet nipple 31, a vacuum will result between the wall of the tub 5 in the ice cream can container 14.
It will at once be apparent that when the hollow metallic cover 23 is removed from the tub, a container A of ice cream may be positioned within the receptacle 141, at which time, this cover plate 23 may be properly secured in place through the instrumentality of the cross rod or arm 27, and the screw bolt 28, andwhile I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. In an article of the class described, a wooden container, a metallic container therein, a rigid cover for the wooden container, a detachable cover for the metallic container, said last named cover engaging through an opening within the first mentioned cover and means for establishing a vacuum between the interior oi"? the wooden container and the said metallic container.
2. In an article oi the class described, a wooden container, a metallic container centrally therein, an annular flange formed adjacent the end of the last named container and having its marginal edge engaging within a groove of the wooden container, an air impervious lining within the wooden container and upon the bottom of the said annular flange, a cover for both containers, and means for establishing a vacuum between the interior of the wooden container, and the said metallic container.
3. In an article of the class described, a tub, a container within the tub and formed with a flange or disk at its upper disk, the marginal edge of the flange extending within a channel within the upper end of said tub, an air impervious lining within the tub and upon the under surface of said flange or disk, :1 cover for the tub, a cover for the container, and means for establishing a vacuum within the tub.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD J. HAYES.
