Description
Feb. 26 1924. 1,485,260
F. ERNST DEVICE FOR THE TREATMENT OF AFFECTIONS OF THE AIRWAYS OF THE HUMAN BODY Filed March 17, 1922 Patented Feb. 26, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRITZ mms'r, OF ZURICH, SWITZERLAND.
DEVICE FOR THE TBEATIBNT OF AFFECTIONS OF THE AIRWAYS OF THE HUKLN BODY.
and improved device for the treatment ofafiections of the airways of the human body.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which produces hot air, which air is introduced by aspiration into the airways.
Other objects of the invention relate to the construction of the device which are more fully described in the annexed specification.
In the drawings forming part of the spec ification Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line A-B of F' 1. 3 is an end view of the device and Fi 4 shows the connection of the electrica resistances in a diagrammatical manner.
The device shown in the drawing comprises a tube 1 lined on its inside wit tubular layer 2 of insulating material. At one end the layer 2 is provided with an inwardly projecting flange 3, the other end is provi ed with a cover 4. In the cover 4 and the so flange a tube 5 is fixed. Between the layer 2 and the tube 5 there is a s through which air passes entering t rough holes 7 and through ho es 8 into tube 5. Withm the tube 5 a number of disks 9 are The disks 9 are fixed on a spindle 10 by means of nuts 11; the 'indle 10 is screwedintothecover4.E disk9is provided with a number of holes 12 and .pnthediskselectricalcoilsltiare u fixed. The as aretethree split- pins 14, 15, 16 fixed to the cover 4 in the manner shown in Fig. 4. In the tube 5 a-mouth piece 17 of glass is fixed in which a disk 18 of fine wire gauze is fixed, said disk being easily removable. In the mouth piece 17 humidified or medicated fibres, cotton, etc., may be loosely arranged through which air may be drawn. The pins 14, 15, 16 are arranged with reference to each other in such a manner that the plug 20 which is connected to the live wires may be brou ht on the plu 14, 15 or 14, 16. If the p ug is put on t 1e pins 14, 15 all the resistances are brought in circuit, if the plu is fixed on the pins 14, 16 only half of t e resistance is brought in circuit. I
The piece 17 is taken in the mouth and air is drawn in which by passing along the heated resistances is heated and enters the air ways in heated condition (about to C.) The heated'air has a marked heating efiect by bronchitis, inflammations, etc. The heated air by passing through the piece 17 evaporates water, etc., with which the cotton, etc., has been soaked.
Also I have described the preferred form of construction. I wish it understood that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I wish to secure by U. S. patent is: A device for the treatment of aflections of the airways comprisi an outer tube, having perforations, a per orated inner tube in the outer tube and the wall of which is s from the wall of the outer tube, h mouth .connected to one end of the outer tu :pondin'g end of the inner tube, a closure for e opposite end of the inner tube, resistances in the inner tube and having supporting means attached to the closure, and electrical conductors also attached to the closure and connected to said a and extending into 'the corre-' In witnes whereof I efix mlyEagasti ire.
