Description

S. CRYSTAL SPACE INDICATOR FOR FILING DEVICES Feb. 26 1924.
Filed March 31. 1923 Patented Feb, 26, 1924.
SIEGFRIED CRYSTAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPACE INDICATOR FOR FILING DEVICES. i
Application filed March 31, 1923. Serial No. 629,101;
Bronx, city and State of New York, have.
invented a certain new and useful Space Indicator for Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable those conversant with the art to which the invention appertains to utilize the same.
My invention relates to trays, boxes, drawers and receptacles generally, intended for use, temporarily or otherwise, for the accessible storage or filing of cards, indexes, papers, records, etc., in such manner that the component parts of the file (considering the latter in a unitary sense) may be individually removed from, and replaced in correct position and alignment in, the receptacle in accordance with the varying requirements of practical use,-my object being to facilitate manipulation, insure accuracy, etc., all as hereinafter fully set forth ;the invention consisting in the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and appurtenances described and claimed, and the distinctive feature being the provision of a marker or space indicator pivotally and slidably mounted on a longitudinal support on the side of the file container, the free end of said indicator being adapted to be inserted into or removed from a space incidental to the removal of one of the series of memoranda slips, constituting the file, substantially as and for the reasons explained herein.
In the accompanying drawings I exemplify a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention in connection with a file container although I do not limit myself to the identical construction and arrangement of parts shown, since changes in form of minor details, and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
With this understanding,
Fig. 1, represents a perspective view of an elongate rectangular file container provided with my adjustable space indicator, etc;
Fig. 2, is a perspective detail showing one of the end supports for the rail on which the space indicator is adjustably mounted;
Fig. 3, is aperspective view of said supporting rail, broken away in part.
C, represents an elongate rectangular tray, drawer, or container of any kind adapted to accommodate a series'of cards, slips a, a, or equivalent removable and replaceable means for record or reference purposes in a manner well known in the art.
R, is a rod or rail which, in the form of container shown, is positioned extraneously, although in certain types of file containers it may be positioned within and at one side thereof, as functioning to support a pivotally mounted space indicator S.
The rail R, is circular in cross section, or substantially so; and in the construction shown extends the whole length of the container, its ends 7, 7, being bent at right angles to the longitudinal extension of the rail, and being mounted in sleeve bearings b, 6, attached to the ends of the container. This arrangement admits of the sliding in of the rail R, against the side of the container when not desired for immediate use, as indicated in Fig. 2, of the drawings.
The space indicator S, in its simplest form, consists of a rod formed with a loop 8, for pivotal engagement with the rail B, so that it may be swung or moved freely thereon, or hang suspended therefrom, as shown in dotted lines at the front end of Fig. 1, of the drawings.
The function of the space indicator S, is
to mark visually a temporary vacancy in the file created by the withdrawal from its place of one of the memor'anda slips a, so as to facilitate replacement thereof.
By this means much time and labor is saved in the practical use of a file of the character designated, because my space marker S, is always available, dispensing with the use of odd kinds of markers heretofore relied upon, such as a ruler or any other available loose article, in the absence of which the component parts of the file would close up, resulting in much loss of time and inconvenience in overhauling the file in order to find the proper location of a slip to be returned to the file after use,
not to mention the danger of possible misplacement and confusion resultant therefrom.
The free end of the space indicator S, is preferably formed with a knob or boss 3, to facilitate manipulation and render its location prominent.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In combination with a file container of the character designated, a space indicator eemeo pivot-ally mounted on a longitudinal extraneous rail, said rail the extremities of which are siidably mounted on the ends of the container, said space indicator being adjustable upon said mil with relation to the length 01 the file, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
