SIDE E FOR TRACK-LAYING TRACTORS.
Application filed. April 14, 1921, Serial No. 461,284. Renewed April .24, 1922. Serial No. 556,359.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, RoLLIN- H. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, haveinvented a cer- ;tain new and useful Improvement in Side Frames for Track-Laying Tractors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is a track frame or runner which is especially adapted for use with the track layin tractor which forms the subject matter 0 my prior application Serial No. 429,416, filed Dec. 9, 1920, the object being to provide a cheap, light-weight frame which is especially adapted for the stated use, and is strong enough for the purpose.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Fig. l is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of said track frame in the plane of line 2-2 on Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section the plane of line 3-3 on Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section in the plane of line 4-4 on Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section in the plane of line 5-6 on Fig. 1;' and Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view in the plane of line 66 on Fig. 2.
The main member 10 of the frame is made of sheet metal having sides 10 which are turned downwardly into vertical position. The top 10 of this main frame member is slotted longitudinally from each end backward a short distance,-and the metal along the sides and at the ends of the slot are turned downward to form respectively the flanges 10 and 10.
The bottom member of the frame is a longitudinally extended shoe 12 having downwardly turned edges which fit between and engage and are secured to the lower edges of the side members 10 of the main frame member. In this shoe, extending fromend to end thereof, is an upwardly extended groove 12 formed by ending up metal, said groove being of sufficient depth and. width for the accommodation of the rollers 20 which are mounted on a roller chain which is interposed between the shoe of this frame and the track belt, engaging both, which roller chain and track belt are not shown herein because they are not parts of the. invention which this application is intended to'cover.
At its ends the shoe is curved upward slightly, and the extreme ends of the upturned portion are made narrow in order to save weight, their width being only s viii cient to accommodate and furnish the groove 12'.
Brace plates 14 are employed adjacent each end of the shoe. The shoes are fitted between the sides 10 of the main member and have their edges turned over to form flanges 14" which are riveted to the side members 10". The upper edge of each of these braces is also bent to form a flange 1a which engages the top 10 of the main memher and is riveted thereto, this construction being found, as before stated, adjacent both ends of the shoe;
The flanges 10 are turned down into engagement with the brace plates 14. and are preferably spot-welded to them.
Braces 15 are likewise provided for the front and rear narrow upturned ends of the shoe, the lower edges of these braces being bent over to form flanges 15 which engage the tops of the narrow extensions of the shoe, and are riveted thereto. The u per ends of these brace plates are bent an are carried into engagement with the top of the main member, and are riveted thereto.
A bracket 16 is secured to the top 10 near the rear thereof, but'just in front of and adjacent the front end of the slot in the rear end of the top member of the frame, the purpose of this bracket bein to furnish means by which said frame may epivotally connected with the main frame of; the tractor. Near the front of the frame a bracket 17 is riveted against the outer face of'the inner side 10 and extends inward therefrom, the purpose of this bracket being to furnish a seat for a spring by means of which the front end of the main frame may be supported by, said side frame.
Thedescribed frame is as stated made of ice sheet metal except for the bracket 16, and is in its lower face which extends longitudinally, from the front to the rear end of said shoe. 7
2. A track frame comprising a pressed metal main member having downturned sides and a shoe which is disposed between the lower edges of said downturned sides and is secured thereto said shoe having a centrally'disposed upwardly pressed groove in centrally disposed upwardly pressed groove in its lower face which extends longitudinally from the front to the rear end of said shoe, the front and rear ends of the grooved parts of said shoe be'ing upwardly curved.
4. track frame comprising a pressed metal main member having downturned sides and a shoe which is disposed between the lower edges of said downturned sides and is secured thereto saidshoe having a centrally disposed upwardly pressed 'groove in its lower face which extends longitudinally from the front to the rear end of said shoe, and brace plates fitted within the said main member and extending from the top thereof downward, said brace plates having turned over top and side edges which are secured respectively to the top of the main member and to the sides thereof.
5. A track frame comprising a pressed metal main member having downturned sides and a shoe which is disposed between the lower edges of said downturned sides and is secured thereto said shoe having a centrally disposed upwardly pressed groove in its lower face which extends longitudinally from the front to the rear end of said shoe, brace plates fitted within the said main member and extending from the top thereof downward said brace plates having turned over top and side edges which are secured respectively to thetop of the main member andto the sides thereof, and other brace plates secured to the main frame member having bent over lower ends which engageand are secured to the shoe near the ends thereof.
6. A track frame comprising a pressed metal main member having downturned sides, and having in its top at each end thereof a centrally disposed longitudinally extended slot which extends from the end inward a short distance, the side edges and end of said slot having integral downwardly turned flanges, a shoe which is disposed between the lower edges of said downturned sides and is secured thereto said shoe having a centrally disposed upwardly pressed groove in its lower face which extends longitudinally from the front to the rear end of said shoe, and brace plates, each one located adjacent the inner end of one of said longitudinally extended slots in 'the top of the main member in engagement with the downturned flange at the inner end of said slot, the brace plate having on its upper edge a bent over flange which engages the inner surface of the top of the main member and is riveted thereto and having integral flanges along its sides which engage the inner surface of the sides of the main member and are riveted thereto.
'7. A track frame comprising a pressed metal main member having downturned sides, and a shoe which is disposed between the lower edges of said townturned sides and is secured thereto,--said shoe having a centrally disposed upwardly pressed groove in its lower face which extends lon itudinally from the front to the rear end 0 said s ice, and a bracket secured to and. extending transversely across the top of the main member adjacent the rear end thereof, and a bracket secured to the inner side of the main member near the front end thereof and projecting away from the side to which it is connected.
