ivd/@AZZ NITED S'LA'ruizfsj PATENT OFFICE.
ALFORD A. BOUNDS, OF MALONE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,496, dated March 10,1874; application tiled February 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. A. RoUNDs, of Malone, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spring bed-bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, an end View; and Fig. 3, an end view in section, show! ing the construction of the springs and supports, and the means of attachment.
A A represent two parallel bars, forming, with the end bars B B, that connect them, a rectangular frame to receive my spring bedbottom; or this frame may he part of the bedstead itself, as my bed-bottom may be attached directly to the bedstead just as well as to a separate frame. C C represent a series of ordinary bed-slats running crosswise ofthe bed.
Each slat is at each end provided with a spring,
D, formed of one piece of wire, in the following manner: A piece of spring-wire of the desired thickness, and of suitablelength, is bent to form a straightpart, a, in the center, and the arms b b, which incline toward each other for a short distance from said part a, and then run nearly parallel with each other in a horizontal direction. The arms b b are then twisted to form thecoils d d, and the remainingpart of the wire forms arms e e, which extend upward for a suitable distance, and are then bent horizontally outward to form rests e e' to support the slat C, and the extreme ends of the wire are passed upward through holes in the slat and clinched on the upper side thereof. 'lhe rests e e ot' the spring are held close to the slat by means of a staple, f, passed down from the top through the slat, and the ends of the staple are clinched on the under side around the rests c. Gr represents a malleable-iron hook, with a vertical passage, h., and at the bottom thereof a horizontal notch, i, the whole constructed substantially as shown. As many of these hooks are used as there are springs in the bed-bottom, and they are secured to the inner sides of the side pieces of the frame A B, or of the bedstead. The straight central part a of each spring D is passed downward through the vertical passage h, and into the notch i.
This forms a simple and easy spring bedbottom, which cansbe manufactured at con paratively small cost.
The tendency ot' the springs, it will be noticed, when any pressure is upon them, is to draw the side pieces together, instead of, as usual, to spread them apart.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The supports G G, constructed as shown, in combination with springs D D and slats C C, as and for the purpose set forth. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ALFORD ALBERT BOUNDS.
