K. F. STODDARD ET AL SANITARY BELT BUCKLE Filed March 16, 1922 Patented Feb. 26, 1924.
NlT ED STATES PATENT ounce.
SANITARY BELT BUCKLE.
Applicationfiled March 16, 1922, Serial No. 544,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, KATHERINE F. Sron- DARD and RUDOLPH A. KRAUTWALD, citizens of the United States, and residents of the 8 city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Sanitary Belt Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanitary belts,
and more particularly to means for fastening a sanitary napkin to the belt in such a manner that when in position, such napkin will be securely held thereby, but may be ll readily detached when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved fastening means adapted to be held in operative position by tension on a member inserted therein, and released by easing of such tension on said member.
Other and further objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combina tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention showing the fastening means securing a napkin to the belt,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the fastening device showing, in dotted lines, a frag s5 ment of the belt secured thereto,
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3'3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the fastening means showing the manner of engagement of a napkin therewith, and
, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastening device in operative position.
The invention consists of a belt 10 preferably of elastic material, having a suitable buckle 11 adapted to fasten the belt about the waist of the user. The belt is preferably provided with front and rear flaps 12 and 13, which also are preferably of elastic material.
Secured to each of the flaps 12 and 13, by
any suitable means, is a sleeve 14, adapted to receive and loosely retain inwardly turned ends 15 of a looped member 16, as shown in Fig. 2. Pivotally mounted adjacent the member 16 is a similar looped member 17,
such member being swingable toward but not past the member 16, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 1.
Although it is not necessary, we find it desirable to mount a member 17 on the turned ends 15 of the member 16, such mem c0 bers thus being pivotally mounted on a common axis. Such mounting preferably consists of eyes 18 formed by laterally bending the ends of the loop 17 over the ends 15 as shown in the drawings, the loop 17 preferat ably extending through the loop 16, and of a length so that same may approach the loop 16 but cannot pass therethrough.
In order to illustrate the operation of the fastening means, we have shown a sanitary napkin 19 in engagement therewith. Such engagement is preferably brought about by inserting the end of the napkin through the loops, folding same over the outside loop and back through the inside loop as clearly N shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. hen tension is placed upon the napkin by the elastic belt, the loop 17 is caused to bind or clamp against the loop 16, and the greater the tension upon such napkin, the more tightly will the fastening means become engaged. Loosening of the napkin enables ready detachment from the fastening means.
The utility of the device is at once apparent, as it is possible to conveniently connect or disconnect one or both of the fastening means at either end of the napkin, such ends being adapted to be firmly held so long as the tension 011 the napkin causes the loops to bind against each other, thereby doing away with safety pins or other inconvenient and dangerous fastening devices.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Fastening means of the character described comprising a pivotally mounted looped member; and a second looped member extending to one side of the axis of said first looped member, projecting through said first looped member, and movable toward but not past said first looped member.
2. Fastening means of the character described including a sleeve,.a looped member having turned portions pivot-ally mounted in said sleeve; and a second looped member mounted on said turned portions so as to be disposed at one side thereof, extendingthrough said first looped member, and movable toward but not past said first looped member.
In testimonywhereof e 'hayesigned our names to 'this'specification in the presence 15 of tWosubscribing witnesses.
