E. A. KAMERER FOLDING CRATE Filed Jan. 26. 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 i which the following is a specification,refer-v retiree eat... as, teat.
romaine ciaa'rn Application area January as, was. "serial .iio. mam.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be itknown that citizen of the- United States, residin at Cedar, in-the county ofMahaska and tate of'lowa, have invented-certain newand useful Improvements in Folding Crates, of
ence being drawings. V
This invention relates to a -folding crate,
had therein to the accompanying and hasfor its object the construction of a simple and efficient crate thatcan be handledin a folded or-knock-down conditiomand which can quickly be adjusted to its open osition for receiving goods or products to he handled or shipped.-
With this and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions'and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter-described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
. more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
. 1n the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of'acrate- I of the arrows.
Figure 4 i a bottom plan view of my crate.
Figure 5 is .a perspective view of the crate, showing the same in a folded position,
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a side of the crate.
Figure 7 is a plan view of the blank from which one section of the primary hinge device is formed. f
Figure 8 is a .blank view of one of the sections of the auxiliary hinge device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the side sections as a whole,
and 2 are the bottom sections connected to' some of the side sections by hinges 3. Eachside section comprises a plurality of horizontal slats or strips 4 connected together, at their ends, b one section of one ofthe primary hinge devices 5 and one section of one of the auxiliary hinge devices 6;
Each primary hinge device comprises two similarly-constructed sections and it will Figs. 1 to 4. It is to be noted that the v v .onlybe necessary to specifically describe one EMANUEL A. KAMERER,
section: Each section is formed from a blanl: strip or piece of material (Fig. 7) &Ild"1S'-f0ld6(l along lines? and -8 to produce a'substantially U shaped body in cross seccc tthe. ends of the section, and contiguous to opposite cornersof said section, are out- 20: 1am: which body fits the ends of strips pivotally connected.
There are two auxiliary hinge devices 6 used in the construction of my crate, just the same as there are two primary hin e devices employed; each auxiliary hinge evice, like the primary hinge device, comprises two sections, each formed from a blank (Fig. 8) ;'the blank is folded along lines 12 so as to produce a substantially U -shaped body (Fig. 6) similarto the U-shaped body of. the sections of the primary hinge device. Extending from opposite ends and at the middle of the sections are apertured lips 13. These lips 13 are bent outwardly (Fig. 6),
for receiving rivets 14:, whereby the sections ofthe auxiliary hinge devices are pivotally connected together.
I employ two angle rest members 15, securedat opposite. sides of the crate, upon which the hinged bottoms rest, when the device is in a set-up position, as shown in lower lips 9 of the sections of the prima hinge device 6', are formed in the same horrzontal (Fig. 6) plane with the lower flange of the angle members 15, so that these lower lips 9 and angle members 15 form a seatand rest flange upon which portions of the hinged bottom sections 2 rest when the device is in a set-up or unfolded position.
"Whenthe device is in 'a set-up position as shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to fold the parts together, as shown in Fig. 5, all that is necessary is for the operator to press upward on the hinged bottom sections, to cause the sameto close against the sides ofthe crate, and then by pressing inward --up0n we the sides so as to place the auxiliary hin e devices at the middle (Fig. 5), the who e crate will easily and quickly fold together,
- trated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations I mayappear to one skilledv in the art to each section of the which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture otthe same and" I, therefore, reserve the rlght to make such alterations or changes as shall falrl fall within the scope o the appended c aims. What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pluralit of side sections, a pair of primary hinge evices connecting some ofsaid side sectlons together, a pair of auxiliary hinge devices connecting some of said side sectlons together, each of said primary hinge devices comprising sections, grlmary hinge devlce comprisin a U-shape body provided at its ends wit overhanging, apertured lips,
means connecting the hps of the sections of the primary hinge devices together, and bin sai side sections.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a lurality of side sections, primary and auxi iary hinge devices 1votally connecting said side sect1ons toget er, each rimary hinge device comprlsmg sections liaving U-shaped bodies and with inwardly extending overhanging lips at their ends, means pivotally connecting said =lips together, angle rest members secured to some of said side sections and having pord bottom sections secured to some of tions in alignment with some of the overhanging li s, and hingedly mounted bottom sections a a ted to rest on said angle rest members an on some of said overhan 'n lips, substantially as shown and descri e 3. In a device of the class described, the combination of side sections, hinge devices pivotally connecting said side sections, said hin e devices comprising sections provided witfi U-shaped bodies and with horizontal, apertured lips, means pivotally connecting said lips together, and hinged bottom sections connected to some of said side sections. 1 4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of side sections, hinge devices pivotally connecting said side sections, each inge device includin a pair of sections having U-shaped bodies and apertured angularly-dis osed lips, means pivotally connecting sai lips, and fold-up ottom sections supported upon some of said side sections.
5. In a device of the class described, the .combination of a crate provided at its corners with horizontal lips, angle rest members carried by said crate and provided with ortions in alignment with some of said ips, and a sectional bottom fastened to said crate and adapted to rest upon some of said lips and said angle rest members.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
EMANUEL A. KAMERER.
