CURTAN FASTENER.
Application tiled July 18,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that Ross L. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, has invented new and useful lmprovements in Curtain Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a fastener or curtains which are used onautomobiles and other vehicles, the fastener including tensioned jaws adapted to spread when fitting over the head of a stud (either carried by another curtain or upon a stationary part of the vehicle) and to con-- tract after passing over the head in order to engage a groove in the stud, thereby holding the curtain securely.
Another purpose is to provide a fastener of this character dispensing with the form of fastener now in use.
Still another purpose is the provision of supporting and guiding means for the tensioned jaws to hold them in alinement and to guide them in registration after spreading to insure the jaws contracting and engaging the jaws on the stud.
A further purpose is the provision of improved means for securing the fastener permanently to the curtain.
A still further purpose is the provision ot curved counter sinks upon the opposite jaws 'for the purpose of guiding the stud between the jaws, in fact, to permit the stud to more easily enter between the jaws.
Another purpose is the provision ot an improved housing` for the jaws and for the tensioning meansY in order to prevent displacement of such parts.
lt is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that` while still keeping within the scope of the invention` anv desired modifications et detail and desired proportions may be made in the vapparatus according to the circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Figure 1 is a view showing the fastener as applied to a curtain and in turn connected to an adjacent curtain to hold the two curtains together, the stud inlthis instance being riveted to the vehicle cover and provided with double grooves.
Figure 2 is a view showing the fastener ap 1923. serial no. 652,423.
plied to a curtain and engaged with a stud which is threaded to a stationary part of the vehicle.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View on line 8 8 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view on line 4.-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figures 7, 8 and 9 are detail views of the studs 4, 5 and 6 which are used for fastening curtains together or to a stationary part of the vehicle.
Figure 10 is an enlarged detail edge view of the cover plate 18.
A Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main part of the casing which is chambered, as shown at 2, to provide a housing for the tensioned jaws 3 which cooperate with various studs 4, 5 or 6, as shown in the detail views in Figures 7, 8 and 9.
1n constructing the main part of the housing 1, a marginal flange 7 is provided. At diametrically opposite portions of the housing, the iiange 7 is relatively thin and its edge is provided with a rabbet 8. The flange at right angles to the relatively thin portions is provided with diametrically enlarged or thickened solid parts 9. The adjacent corner edges oi' these parts 9 are rabbeted, as at 10, and these rabbets merge into the rabbet 8 of the relatively thin portions of the flange. The ralobet 8 and the rabbets 10 receive a plate 11 which corresponds to the shape of the chamber 2 of the main part of the casing.
Extending from the bottom wall of the chamber 2 and disposed adjacent to the diametrically opposite sides of the bottom are posts 13. The posts are diamond-shaped in cross section and their ends, as shown, have rabbets 14. The rabb'eted ends of the posts 13 enter correspondingly shaped openings 15 in the plate 11. The posts 13 have bores or cylindrical chambers 16 which receive projections 17 which project laterally from a holding plate 18. This plate is circular and is used for securing the fastener to a curtain. In other words, the curtain is placed between the plate 18 and the main body 1 of the fastener. that is. after disposing the plate 11 in position in the rabbets 8 and 10 and in engagement with the posts 13. The projections 1? ierce or penetrate the curtain and enter the ores or chambers 16 or the posts, thereby assisting materially in alfording a secure means for connecting the fastener to the curtain. v Y
The diametrically oppositie enlargements or solid portions 9 of the main body 1 of the fastener' have bores 19 of cylindrical form and the inner ends of the bores are curved, as shown clearly in Figure 6, and are adapted to receive the pointed projections 2O which are also carried by the plate 18. The pointed projections 20 likewise pierce or penetrate the curtain and act as means to additionally secure the fastener to the curtain.
When the plate 18 is placed in position, after the projections 17 and 20 have pierced or penetrated the Y curtain, the plate 1s pressed as closely as possible toward the main part 1 of the fastener. ln other words, the plate 18 can be disposed so that t-he projections 2O will contact with the larger curved wall of the inner curved ends of the bores 19. When the projections 20 are so arranged, the plate 18 is forced toward the main part 1 of the fastener by heavy pressure or by hammer blows 0r the plate 18 positioned as closely as possible to the main part 1 of the fastener may be placed between the jaws of a vise to force the plate 18 tightly against the main part 1 of the fastener. In forcing the plate 18 in such position, the inner pointed ends of the projections 20 will cam upon the larger curved wall of the inner curved ends of the bores, causing the projections 20 to bend and thereby conform to the inner curved ends of the bores in such a manner as to anchor the plate 18 so securely in position as to prevent displacement of the plate. In this way, the fastener is connected securely to thecurtain, the projections 20 acting as additional means for preventing` displacement of the fastener.
The jaws 3 have annular grooves 21 in which a round coiled spring 22 engages. This spring acts to draw the two jaws 3 together and, due to adjacent edges of the jaws having semi-diamond-shaped recesses 23, engaging the posts 13, the jaws are guidedtoward and in register with each other. The semi-diamond-shaped recesses 28, when the jaws 3 are in register, cause diamond-shaped openings to be formed forV the reception of the diamond-shaped posts which project from the bottom of the chamber of the main body 1 of the fastener. When the jaws separate against the tension of the spring 22, the faces of the posts cooperate with the recesses 23 to guide the jaws in register and to hold them in position.
The jaws 3 also have semi-cylindrical recesses 24- on their adjacent edges and when such recesses 24 are in register a cylindrical openingis afforded for the reception of one nseaeea of the posts f1, 5 or 6. The marginal surface adjacent the ends of the recesses 24 are curved off, as shown at 25, or, in other words, counter-sinks are provided acting to cause one of the studs 4, 5 or 6 to more easily enter Vthe central opening caused to be formed by the recesses 24. A'l/Vhen either one of the posts 4, 5 or 6 enters the central opening between the jaws 3, the jaws spread, and after spreading over the heads 26 of the posts or over the intermediate enlargement 27 of the post 6,'the jaws diametrically contract for theV purpose'of engaging one or the other of the annular grooves 28, 29 or 30. Y
When the openings made bythe recesses 24 engage with either one of the grooves of said posts, a curtain is held connected to another curtain or to a stationary part of the frame of the vehicle. This form of fastener will hold the curtain securely and the construction of fastener as above set forth dispenses with the form of fastener now in use which Vis somewhat similar in` construction to the extensively used glove snap fastener. 1n such construction of fastener there are no eXpansible or spreading jaws which enable the fastener to be more easily connected to a post. The central opening between the jaws 3, due to the countersinks or post guiding surfaces, is contracted near its central portion so as to correspond with andfit any one of the grooves 28. 29 or 30.
The plate 11 has a central opening 31 corresponding to the larger diameter of the countersinlrs or curved portions 25 of the jaws. The plate 18 also has an opening 32 whichcorresponds in diameter to the opening 31. Thes'eopenings enable any one of the studs to penetrate between the jaws for thedpurpose of securing the fastener to a stu The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
1. A fastener for curtains includin a main body having a chamber, a plate c osingthe chamber on one side of the main body,1tensioned spreading jaws in the chamber, posts projecting from the bottom of the chamber anddisposed between'the jaws for guiding them in register, said jaws having opposite recesses forming an opening to receive a stud on a curtain or a stationary part of a vehicle, a plate between which and the main body a curtain is' disposed, the second plate having projections passing through the curtain and entering the posts to secure said parts, and means carried by the second plate and operatively connecting with the main body of the fastener for securing the second plate in position and securing the fastener to the curtain.
2.1%. fastener for curtains including a leem@ main body having a chamber, expansible jaws mounted in the chamber and having an opening for the reception of a stud which may be carried by a curtain or a stationary part, posts'on the bottom of the chamber for guiding the jaws and holding them in register, a cover Plate for preventing lateral displacement of the jaws and having means operatively connecting 1o with the posts, the body of the fastener cured in t eii` inner ends for holding the M5 second plate in position securely.
In testimony whereof he axes his signa ture.
