' A. C. CRIMMEL CASTER FOR FURNITURE Filed March 16. 1925 Patented Feb l9, i924.
T ET E T ALVIE C. CRIMMEL, OF HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA.
CASTER ron rnnnrronn.
Application filed. March 16, 1923. Serial No. 625,432.
To all whomz't may concern:
' Be it known that I, ALVIE C. C IMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford City, county of Blackford, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Caster for Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a class of devices in the nature of casters or shoes for the feet of the legs of furniture, and more particularly to that class of these devices which slide on the floor and in which a pintle sleeve, or stem is for attachment inserted within the furniture and with which pintle the shoe has a rocking or oscillatory connection for the purpose of preserving a flat contact of the shoe with the floor when the article of furniture is moved over uneven fioors or obstructions such as rugs or carpets.
The object of my invention is the construction of an efficient and inexpensive caster of the foregoing general character which is adapted to beapplied to all kinds of furniture, and it comprehends a novel construction of a pintle carrying or slee've carrying bracket and a sliding shoe connected therewith and capable of limited relative movement with respect thereto.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention comprehends in general a caster a typical embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described, the particular subject-matter which I claim as novel being definitely set forth in the claiming clauses.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings an embodiment of it which will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organizatlon of these instrumentahtles as herein shown and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation, and Figure 2 a side elevation, of a caster embodying my improve ments.
Figure 3 represents a central, vertical, sectional elevation through the caster as illustrated in Figure 1, with the pintle and J v the connecting bolt in elevation.
Figure. 4: represents a plan, and Figure 5 a side elevation, of the shoe removed from its carrying bracket.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the shoe proper, being pref erably of glass, porcelain or similar material or composition, and preferably also in the form of a solid disc or elliptical, body the under surface of which is preferably flat but may be slightly concave or convex.
2 designates a shoelug preferably integral of the shoe proper, and extending upwardly from the upper. surface of said shoe. This lug forms a part of the means of connection between the shoe and the leg or other element of the piece of furniture to which the shoe is applied.
The means of connection itself comprises the following elements :A pintle, shank or stem 8, preferably upwardly tapering and formed with a circumferential protuberance 4 which when the pintle is driven into a longitudinal recess or sheath in the piece a head 6 and preferably two extended depending side plates 7, either integral with or attached to the head, which lie alongsideof and loosely embrace the sides of the shoe lug 2,. and are adapted to be loosely I joined thereto by a connecting bolt 8, headed or swaged, as at 9, or threaded and nutprovided, to retain it in place against the side plates of the carrying bracket. It. will be apparent that the nut can be dispensed with and the bolt screwed into one of the lugs of the bracket and this is the way the positions with relation to th e bolt,- 'thebracket and the pintle,. 2 iQdiQated by dotted lines, as seen in Figures 1, 2' and 3:
-The c n e t o of h i l Wit th carrying bracket may, as stated, be integral,' or by means of the flanged collar 12 near the lower end of the pintle and a swaged or rivet-like head 13 beneaththe top portion of the shoe lug 2. It may, however, be by some other form of connection or attachment.
The construction already described will make the operation of my caster as an entirety easily understood and its operation is simply that of a device, the attachment of which to a piece of furniture can be varied by limited oscillatory or rocking movement in practically all directions and which involyes the planar disposition of the bearing surface of the shoe with reference to the pintle or sleeve and to the floor.
The construction as an entirety is in the nature of a ball joint and' while the pintle and bracket attachment remain fixed with reference to the legs or other part of the piece of furniture with which the caster is v connected, the bearing surface of the shoe itself upon the floor is capable of being inclined, so to speak, so that by the tilting of the shoe referably to its means of attachment, the piece of furniture to which the caster is attached can be moved over irregular surfaces. g
The rocking movement of the carrying bracket with respect to the shoe of the caster is limited by the contact of the lower edges of; the side plates 7 therewith, and another rocking movement in a direction at an angle to that already described ispermitted due to the differential chamber of the aperture 10.
It will now be apparentthat I have devised anew and useful caster for furniture which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that this embodiment is susceptible of modification various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention,
upwardly extending lug which the bracket laterally and loosely embraces and which. lug has through it a transverse'bolt aperture outwardly flaring at each end, and a bolt connected with the carrying bracket andpassing through the aperture in the lug.
81A caster for furniture, which comprises a pintle, a carrying bracket to which the pintle is at its lower end connectedand which is fcrmed with two side plates, a shoe proper formed with an upwardly-ex tending lug which in the mounting of the parts passes between the side plates of the carrying bracket and is formed with a transverse aperture, and a bolt which passes through said aperture and'is connected at its ends with the side plates of the'bracket.
i. A caster for furniture, which colliprises a pintle, a carrying bracket to which the pintle is at its lower end connected and which is formed with two side plates, a shoe proper formed with an upwardly-extending lug which in the mounting of the parts passes between th side plates of the carrying bracket and is formed with a transverse aperture outwardly flaring at each end, and a bolt which passes through said flaring aperture is connected at its ends with'the side plates of the bracket and permits of a rocking movement of the bracket and the pintle with reference to the shoe.
5. A sliding shoe comprising a bottom member having a projected lug which lug is provided with flat side walls and having a pin receiving aperture extended therethrough, the longitudinal axis of which is at right angles to the vertical plane of said lugs side walls.
6. As an article ofmanufacture, a sliding shoe for a caster formed with an upwardly extending lug having therethrough a continuous, pin receiving, transverse aperture the walls of which are tapered in opposed relation to provide an outwardly flaring portion at each end of said aperture.
7. A caster for furniture, comprising a pintle, a bracket having downwardly deflected plates, a shoe having an upwardly extending lug provided with a transversely extending aperture which is of greater diameter at its ends than at its central portion and a fastening device passing through said plates and through said aperture, the lug and a pin passing through said aperture 10 lower edges of said plates serving to limit and connecting at each end to said forked the relative rocking movement of said portion.
