UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
" HEINRICH C. BECK, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
vIMPRCVEMENT IN STANDARDS FOR DROP-LIGHTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,404, dated March l0, 1874; application tiled February 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I', HEINRICH G. BECK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Lamps, or Standards for Drop-Lights; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingforming part of this specip fication, in which'drawing- Figure l represents a sectional front view of thls Invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of the same.

sition by a set-screw, or other suitable clamping mechanism.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a stop-cock, the slielgcv of which is secured to and communicates with a tube, B, that slides up and down in a socket, C,rising from a stand, D. The plug el of the stop-cock A connects, by means of a flexible pipe, E, with a gas-supply pipe, in such a manner that the slide B can be raised and lowered, and the plug can be opened or closed without difficulty, whatever may be the position of said slide. On the top of the slide B is secured a burner, E, Vand its bottom end is closed, (see Fig. 2,) and provided with, a set-screw, F, by means of which the slide can be retained at any desired height, the socket C being furnished with a slot, a, through which extends the stopcock the gas-pipe E will in no wise interfere with' its motion.
By these means a gas-lamp is obtained which is cheap and very convenient in its operation, and which can be readily adjusted at any desirable height.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The slotted socket-piece C, combined with the movable burner-tubeB, having a stop-cock, A, to connect it with a gas-pipe, substantially as described, whereby the burner-tube can be raised and lowered, and the stopcock operated at any position in the slot of the socket, as set forth.
2. The slotted socket C and burner-tube B, provided with a stop-cock and with a set-screw, substantially as described, :whereby gas may be admitted to or cut off from the burner-tube, and the tube retained at any required position, as specified. v
c HEINRICH C. BECK.
