ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 12, 1924.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM ALBERT coLLvEn, or MARSHFIELD, omioom] MOVABLE CAP FOR SMOKESTACKS.
Application filed June 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ALBERT CoLLvER, a citizen of the United States of 7 America, and a resident of Marshfield, in
the county of Coos and State ofOregon, have invented a new and Improved Movable Gap for Smokestacks, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a heater associated with a fireplace. Pending concurrently with the present application is an application forming a division of an application filed by me April 21 1922, Serial Number 555,861, and the subject matter of the pres- 1 ent application is a modification ofthe de vices claimed in the said pending divisional application. I The said concurrently pending application was filed June 6,1923, Serial Number 643,758.
The object of the present invention is to provide a novel valve means controlling the Smokestack in question.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specifi- 2 cation, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention. v i y Figure 1 is an enlarged horizontal section through a chimney and Smokestack in association with which my improved valve device is arranged, the section being taken in a plane indicated by the line 1-1, Figure 2,
and looking in the-direction of the arrows in said Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a vertical section as indicated by the line 22, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the devices illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, part of the weighted ring being broken away. i
In carrying out my invention in accord ance with the illustrated example, the smokestack 136 has a fixed laterally extending plate 180 at the top of the chimney structure 163 through which the smoke from the as Smokestack may escape. Above the plate 180 is another plate or cap 181 which in the present example is vertically movable relatively to the plate 180 for which purpose said cap 181 is supported as at 100 on so a plurality of levers 18% disposed at the several sides of the chimney. 163. The levers 18 1 are fulcrumed as at 185 between the ends thereof at the under side of said fixed plate 180.
link connectionslOl with said levers,
1923. Serial N0. 843,759.
. Suspended from the levers 18 1 at the opposite end from the cap connections is a weight ring 186 here shown. as having Said weight ring 186 has pockets 2 86thereon at intervals adapted to receive sand, shot, or the like. The cap 181 at the under side may be strengthened by cross ribs 102. Thus,
with an increase of draft the cap 181 funca tlons automatically to open under an in-v creased draft and lowers with a decrease of the draft pressure.
For raising the cap 181 manually a rock shaft 103 is turnably supported in the chimney structure and has a lateral arm 1 104 to which a rope 105 is secured leading to any point within convenientreach,
The
inner end of the shaft 103 has a lateral arm I 106 terminating in a knob 107 disposed beneath the center of the cap 181 and adapted to engage said cap with the rocking of said shaft 103 by a pull on the rope 105. A 7
weight 108 is provided on arm 106 to counterbalance the weight of the rope when the shaft 103 is at rest.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutesa practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the, exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the
same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of-the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim:
1. A structure of the class described including a smokestack, acap over thesmokestack and adapted to move vertically toward 1 weight connected to the several levers at the opposite ends thereof.
3. A structure of the class described including a smokestack, a cap over the smokestack and adapted to move vertically toward or from the top of the smokestack, levers rfulcrumed between their ends, one end of each lever being secured to said cap, and a Weight connected to the several levers at the opposite ends thereof; togetlier With 5 manually operable means for raising said cap, said means comprising a rock shaft having a member adaptedtc hearupwardlyagainst the cap when the shaft is rocked, a pull rope to rock said shaft for raising the cap, and a Weight on said shaft tending' to restore said rock shaft after move' ment by the pull rope.
