ELECTRIC WATER HEATER.
Application led February 13, 1922. Serial No. 536,166.
To all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. VAN Nor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Electric Water Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an electric water heating attachment for domestic boilers, one of its objects being to provideV means whereby Without changing the circulation of water within a domestic boiler or providing any extra taps in the boiler, the water contained in said boiler can be quickly heated electrically by applying to said boiler an electrode of novel construction.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appeark as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Figure 2 is a section through a domestic boiler showing the present improvements combined therewith.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a tubular body of metal provided with a radial branch or extension 2 which is interiorly screw threaded and is located between the ends of the body. 011e end of the tubular body can be enlarged and made angular as at 3 so as to be properly engaged and rotated by a wrench while the other end of the body can be screw threaded as shown at 4 whereby said body can be screwed into the opening 5 usually provided in the bottom of a domestic boiler 6 and to which the outflow pipe of a domestic water system is ordinarily connected.
Seated within that portion of the body 1 between the branch 2 and the enlarged end 3 is a core 7 of porcelain or other suitable insulating material, one end of this core being preferably formed with an annular flange 8 for lapping the end of the body as shown in Figure 1. A tubular stem 9 of porcelain or other insulating material is extended from the inner end of the core 7, this stem projecting past the branch 2 and beyond the threaded end 4 of the body. A bore or passage 10 is extended longitudinally through the core and its stem 9 seated within this bore or passage is a metal rod 11 which constitutes one electrode of the heating apparatus. That end of the rod projecting beyond the flanged end of the core 7 has a recess 12 for the reception of a wire terminal 13, there being set screws 14 for fastening the terminal in place. That portion of the rod which projects beyond the stern 9 is slightly enlarged in diameter as shown at 15 and can be of any length desired. A shoulder 16 is provided at the lower end of this enlarged portion and bears against the end of the stem 9.
The rod is adapted to extend parallel with and at a short distance from the water feed pipe 17 which extends downwardly into the boiler 6 from the top thereof. The other Wire terminal 18 is attached to this pipe 17 as shown in Figure 2. AThus it will be seen that when a current of electricty is directed to the rod 11 and the pipe 17 there will be a discharge from one to the other through that' portion of the water interposed therebetween with the result that the temperature of the water will be quickly raised. An outlet pipe not shown can be connected to the branch 2 so that heated water can be drawn from the boiler through the space between the body and the stem 9, as will be obvious.
By increasing or reducing the length of the rod 11 the time required to heat the water can be increased or reduced.
That is claimed is 1. An electric water heating attachment for domestic boilers including a tubular body insertible into the water outlet opening in the boiler, a core of insulating material filling one end portion of the body, and a rod of conductive material extending through the core and adapted to lie close to and parallel with the water feed pipe in a boiler, said rod and feed pipe being connected to opposite terminals of an electric circuit.

An electric water heating attachment for domestic boilers and the like including a tubular body for insertion into the out let opening of the boiler, said body having a branch outlet for Water, a core of insulating material tilling one end portion ot the body, a tubular stem projecting trom the core and formed of insulating material, said stem being spaced from the body to provide a Water passage around the stem and leading from one end ot' the body to the outlet in the body, and anl electrode extending longitudinally through the core and stem and beyond said stem, said electrode being adapted tobe supported close to and parallel with the Water iced pipe in a boiler, said pipe and electrode being adapted to be connected to opposed terminals ot' an electric circuit.
3. The combination With a domestic boiler or the like haring a feed Water pipe eX- tending thereinto and connected to one terminal oit an electric circuit, of' an attachment including a tubular body insertible into the outlet opening ot the boiler and having a Water outlet, a core ot insulating material closingf the outer end ot' said body and extending close to the outlet, a stem of insulating material projecting from the core and into the boiler from the body, said stem being spaced trom the body to provide a Water passage leading to the outlet, and an electrode extending through the core and stem and close to and parallel with the pipe, said electrode being connected to the other terminal ot' the electric circuit.

The combination with a Water container and a water feed pipe supported therein, of a tubular body detachably engaging and opening into the container, there being a lateral Water outlet in the body, an insulating core closing the outer end of the body, there being a tubular insulatingr stein projecting to and beyond the open end of the body and into the container, an electrode extending through the core and stem and supported by the stem, said electrode being disposed close to and parallel With the Water feed pipe said electrode and the water teed pipe being electrically connected to the opposed terminals of an electric circuit.
