Description

J. N. CAPECE COMBINED DOOR LOCK MOUNTING UNIT Filed Oct. 26. 1922 Patented Feb. 12, 1924.V
Unirse STATESv JosErHn. Carnon, or ASTORIA, NEW YORK.
ycoiirnirmn DooR-LocK-MOUNTING Unir.
Application filed Gctber 26,V 1922. Serial No. 596,937.
To @ZZ 'wimmelt may concern.'
Be it known that I, Josnrn N. Carnon, a citizen of the United States` residing at 351 Pierce Avenue,v Astoria, Queens County, New York, and whose post-cnice address is #351 Pierce Avenue, Astoria, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Door-Lock-Mounting Units,`of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to a combined door lock, casing 'and mounting therefor.
The object of .the invention, generally stated, "is to simplify the installation of locks on doors and minimize the cost of labor and expense in forming doorV panels and mounting locks thereon. ToA these ends I have devised a lnovel combined unit container and lock together with a door mountpanel cooperating therewith, all of which may be very quickly and easily assembled by the ordinary unskilled workman. In addition to the advantages and savings in cost of installation, my unit container may be produced on a quantity production basis with the resultant economy in manufacture. Moreover, my improved lock installation has a nished appearance comparable in quality and degree with that of prior lock installations. t
For a better under-'standing` of the above indicated advantages and novel features of my invention and others which will hereinafter appear, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side view of one modification of my invention. t
Vig. 2 is a view on l; and
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 respectively are perspective views of the lock, unit container and door mount.
Referring to the drawings where like numerals designate similar parts through:-
the line 2 2 of Fig.
out, a door is illustrated having a side panel 1 on which is to'be mounted alock 2 which may be of any standard construction. My invention comprises as one elementthereof a unitary finished cont-ainer 3 which in the specific embodiment shown is of elongated 'U-shaped form whose legs form the sides or plates 4 and 5, which are adapted to ernbrace,to fit over and bear snugly against the opposite sides of the door panel 1. The side 'plates 4 and 5 are connected together by a web 6 (bend of the U member) and this integral web 6 has an elongated rectangular opening 7 formed therein which is of the required dimensions and depth to receive the face plate 8 of the lock 2, the face plate 8 and the web member 6 forming flushed surfaces with each other ywhen in assembled position. The housing or unity 3 isprovided with a finished keyhole opening 9 which registers with the ykeyhole 10 of the lock and also with an opening 11 for the recept-ion of the door knob spindle 12, this opening 11 being in register with the spindie opening 13 of the lock when in assembled position. The' housing 3 is also provided with the attaching screw openings 14 which receive the screws 14 for entering the panel 1 at the points 15 and thereby retaining the housing unit y3 rigidly in the assembled position in the panel. The door panel may be very simply and inexpensively formed with the transverse recess or opening 16 for the reception of the lock 2 when assembled in position, it being only necessary to chisel or saw out or otherwise form such opening therein. The edge of the door panel is also formed with depressions or seats 17 adjacent the opening 16 for the reception of theends ofthe face plate'8of the lock 2, the depth of these` seats 17 being vequal to the depth of the plate 8 vinvorde'r to form a continuous flush surface along the door edge 18 when assembled. The face plate 8 is provided with the screw openings 19 for the reception of attaching screws whereby the lock 2 may be securely held within the opening 16 by mea-ns of attaching screws 19 passing through the openings 19 and screwed on to the seats 17, the numerals 2O indicating screw openings registering with the openings 19 of the lock plate. The edges 21 of the housing unit 3 may be rounded off or otherwise finished to give the desired finished appearance and similarly the openings 9 and 11 for the reception of the key and the door knob spindles may be also given the desired finish to furnish a good appearance. The openings 11 have formed therearound the sleeves 22 for thek reception of the Shanks 23 of the door knob, these Shanks abutting against the shoulder 24 formed around the bottom of these openings 11.
The housing 3 may, if desired, be provided with internal braces 24, such, for eX- ample, as the transverse plates24 indicatedin dotted lines which may be anchored in y rigidity and strength t obviate the neces-V any desired manner within the casing. Ordinarily the housing 3, however', 1s of sufficient sity kfor any internal bracing. This Vhouslng 3 be of any desired material, as
"metal orr metallic composition. "1t is preferably of a metalV which-may be easily and economically stamped, formed and shapedinto the desired construction `in order to minimize the cost ofV manufacture.` The door panel may be of any standard construction and may have the opening 16 and seats 17 formed therein inthe factory so that all that is required in the assembly of my lock unit is to position the housing 3 upon the seats 17and attach the screws 14C to the door thereby securely anchoring the housing` 3 upon the seats 17 with. the web member 6 Hush withthe edge of the door. This may be done either separately or simultaneously with the positioningof the lock 2. The latter is simply positioned with its face plate within the opening 7 formed in the web member 6 and having the ends of the faceplate 8 resting against the seats' 17 whereupon the screws 19. are inserted 'through the openings 19 and are screwed locks to be assembled on the door anels in the very minimum of time withthe conse? quent economy and saving in labor and eX- pense. lf it is not desired to have the door panels orio'inallyV formed and cut to receive the combined lock unit, it is quite a simple procedure to saw and chisel out the transverse openingv 16 and form the seats 17 on the door edge. The assembled lock and mount, as indicated in Fig. 1, may be of the desired external finish and appearance for use in the higher class houses, and the whole lends itself to harmony and neatness in design. Any desired finish o1' configuration may be given to my unit to suit the taste of the individual designer.
1 claim: Y
1. A lock assembling and'housing unit for door panels comprising an integrally formed member having two parallel side plates adapted to iit against the opposite faces of a door panel and a vertical connecting web connectingthe outer edges of said plates adapted to rest in suitable grooves or recesses formed on the door edge to form a surface flush with the surface of the door edge and said connecting web having a longitudinal openingPV for the reception of a door lock mechanism and face 1plate, the surface of the door edge, theconnecting web and the face plate of the lock mechanism being flush with each other.
2. A device of the character set forth in claim 1 wherein the parallel side plates are provided with bracing means therebetween. y f
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
