Mounted on a suitable base 1 is a hollow cylinder or chamber 2.r in which works a hollow plunger 3. Said hollow plunger is closed at the rear end and open at the front end and constitutes a cylinder for a second plunger hereinafter described. The cylinder 2 is provided with an annular shoulder 5 against which the flanged end portion 6 of a bushing 7 for they plunger 3 abuts. Another bushing 8 is arranged at the forward ond; of cylinder 2. with its end spaced away-from the bushing i. suitable packing 9 is arranged to lill the gap between the ends of said bushings. The clamping cylinder 42 is provided with an opening 43 which is connected with a fluid supply pipe. Suitable bushings 49 and packing 5() in said cylinder fit snugly around said plunger 43.
'Dia'metrically opposed rods 51 are threaded into 'the Itop of the plunger 43 and pron ject through holes provided therefor in the closed end of 'the cylinder 42. An auxilliary clamping cylinder 52 having a plunger 53 arranged therein is disposed in aline- 'ment with said cylinder 42. Suitable packing 54 is interposed between said plunger 53 and Aauxiliaryclamping cylinder 52. On the endof said plunger is a yoke 55 which `is provided with holes through which the threaded rends of the rods 5l' project. AB v means olf nut-s 5G, the position of the yoke 55 on said rods 51 can/'be adjusted. The auxiliary clamping cylinder 52 is provided with. an opening 57 which ris connected with a fluid supply pipe.
Rods 58 are ethreaded into the closed end of the clamping cylinder 42 and project longitudinally therefrom. Adjustably secured 'io the ends of said rods 58 by nuts 59 is a yoke'GO. Said rods 58 are arranged so that the yoke) 60 is beyond and substantially at right angles -to the yoke 55; so that the return movementof the plunger 43 is limited thereby.
An auxiliary cylinder 6l is mounted with its closed end abutting against the closed end of the cylinder 2. An auxiliary holylow plunger 62 open at one end is arranged open end foremost in said auxiliary cylinder Said cylinder 61 is provided with an opening 63 which is connected with a fluid pipe 64. Said hollow plunger 62 is also provided with an opening 65near its end, pipe 66 which leads to the pipe 35 of the collar 16. The
communication between said auxiliary hollow plunger 62 and the interior of said hollow plunger 3 is always kept open and fairly constant pressure is maintained in said auxn iliary hollow cylinder 6l. while the machine is in operation.
Said plunger 62 has a cross-head 67 on the end thereof which is provided with holes through which pass rods 63 which are secured to the end of the plunger 3 and pass through holes provided therefor in the end of the cylinder Said cross-head 67 is adjustably held on said rods by nuts 69.
A. limit stop is provided for the plunger, comprising rods 70 projecting from the end of the main cylinder 2 above and below said auxiliary cylinder 6l. respectively and havy ing a cross piece 71 adjustably secured thereto near their outer ends, as by nuts rlhc stop limits the return movement of the plunger and thus enables the face of the plunger 3 to limit the amount of feed of the bar 39.
In the slightly modified construction shown in Fig. 4 a hollow nose piece 80 flares at one end and is secured to the end of the hollow plunger 3. Preferably the nose piece S0 is composed of separate members secured together by' bolts 80W The flaring portion of the nose piece 'is skeletonized or provided with openings 3l which give easy access to the end of the hollow plunger, making it easy to repair or replace the packing ring. The nose piece 80 is provided with fins 32 to which are secured cross arms 83 which have curved end portions 34 which engage the bars 4l and thus serve to guide and brace the hollow plunger 3. The die 20 is mounted in a suitable recess in the nose piece 80,
The operation of the press is as follows:
Assuming that both plungers 3 and 25 are in their rearmost positions, the metal stock bar 39 is advanced until it strikes theface of the die 36 and water under pressure is then allowed to enter the clamping cylinder 42, moving the plunger 43 and clamp plate 44 towards the work, causing the latter to engage the bar 39 and hold it lirmly on the work plate 38. Fluid is then allowed to enter the main cylinder 2 under comparatively low pressure, say 1500 pounds per square inch. The hollow plunger 3 is thereby driven forward7 carrying with it tl e smaller plunger 25 and the pressure is transmitted through the 'two dies 20 and 36 against the end of the bar which is upset thereby. yThe upset end is substantially cir.- cular. Ordinarily it is not essential that the shape of the upset end be exactly circular. Vlhen the hollow plunger 3 corn-V pletes its stroke, water under pressure is allowed to enter the auxiliary clamping cyl inder 52 and the pressure in the clamping cylinder 42 is relieved, thus causing the auxiliary plunger 53 to move slightly away from the work, together with the plunger 43 and clamp `plate 44. The peripheral portion of the upset end of the bar is held between the annular die 20 and the dies 46 and 47 The inside plunger 25 continues its forward movement after the hollow plunger has stopped, pushing back the bar 39, and punching out a ring. The fluid pressure in the main cylinder 2 may be increased to, say, 6000 pounds per square inch in order to drive the plunger 25 forward more effectively. The fluid pressure in the main cylinder 2 is then relieved, and the fluid pressure in the auxiliary cylinder 6l causes the auxiliary hollow plunger 62 to move back, carrying with it the large hollow plunger 3, until said auxiliary plunger 62 strikes the yoke 71. The fluid pressure is transmitted through the pipes 66 and 35 and the passageway 34 into the interior of the hollow plunger 3 and causes the inside plunger25 to move to its innermost position in the hollow plunger 3. As the inside plunger moves back, the ring which was punched out, drops ofl1 of the end thereof.
A press of the kind above described is economical both of labor and material. The work does not have to be moved between the operation of upsetting and that of punching and is always held in proper position for the punching operation. By means of the adjustable limit stop, the face of the plunger can be made to serve as a limit for the feed of the work, thus making it certain that the proper portion of the stock will be upset.
It is obvious that numerous changes may be made without departing from my invention, and l do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown.
What I claim is: v
l. A press comprising a cylinder coml municating with a source of fluid pressure,
a hollow plunger in said cylinder constituting a cylinder for 'a second plunger and having an opening in its back portion communieating with a source of fluid pressure, a second plunger' in said hollow plunger, means for holding a bar or the like in position to be operated on by said plungers, and means for controlling the supply of fluid pressure to said cylinders to cause said plungers acting together to upset the end of said har and then to cause said second plunger to punch out a ring from said upset portion.y
A press comprising a cylinder communicating with a source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger therein, the interior of said hollow plunger communicating with said cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, releasable clamping means adapted to hold a metal bar or the like while it is being operated on by said plungers acting together, means for releasing said clamping means and means for controlling the fluid pressure to cause one of said plungers to operate on said bar alone.
3. A press comprising a hollow cylinder, a hollow plunger therein closed at one end, a passageway through said closed end 'communicating with said cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger and n'i'eans for supplying fluid under pressure to said cylinder to operate bcth'of said plungers.'
4. A press comprising a hollow cylinder, a hollow plunger therein closed at one end, a passageway through said closedrend communicating with said cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, means for supplying fluid under pressure' to said cylinder to operate bot-h of said plungers, and means for limiting the movement of said hollow plunger and controlling'said fluid pressure to operate said second plunger alone.

hollow plunger in said cylinder'adapted to constitute a cylinder' for a second plunger, said rhollow plunger' having a hole through its rear end, and said'hollow plunger having acollar arranged in itsr open end, said collar having a passageway therein opening into the interior of said hollow plunger andcommunicating with a source of fluid pressure,
a. second plunger in said hollow plunge."
means kfor controlling the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to operate both of said' plungers, and means for controlling said communication to relieve the pressure insaid cylinder whereby the fluid pressure on said second plunger causes it to return in said hollow plunger.
6. An upsetting press comprising a cylinder communicating with a source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger in said cylinder itself constituting a cylinder for a second plunger and communicating with said cylinder, a second "plunger in said hollow plunger, releasable means for holding metal stock in position to be operated on by said plungers, means for controlling the communication between saidy cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to move said lplungers forward to operate ou said bar, means for controlling the ycommunication' 'between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to cause said hollow plunger to move forward with said second plunger yin its rearmost position therein, means for releasing said clamping means, and means for increasing the fluid pressure in said cylinder to move said second plunger forward in said hollow plunger against-said stock while the periphery thereof is held by the end of said hollow plunger.
7. An upsetting press comprising acylinder communicatingv with a source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger in said cylinder, itself constituting a cylinder for a second plunger and communicating with said cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, said cylinder communicating with a second source of fluid pressure in front of the forward position of said second plunger, rcleasable means for holding metal stock in position to be operated on by said plungers, means for controlling the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to move said plungers forward to operate on said bar, means for controlling the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to cause said hollow plunger to move forward with said second plunger in its rearmost position therein, means for releasing said clamping means, means for controlling the fluid pressure in said cylinder to move said second plunger forward in said hollow plunger against said stock while the periphery thereof is held by the end of said hollow plunger, and means for relieving the pressure in said cylinder, whereby the pressure in said hollow plunger causes said second plunger to return to its rearmost position therein.
8. An upsetting` press comprising` a cylinder communicating with a source of fluid pressure, ahollow plunger in said cylinder, itself constituting a cylinder for a second plunger and the interior thereof communieating with said cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, said hollow plunger communicating with a second source of fluid pressure in front of the forward position of said second plunger, releasable clamping means for holding a bar in position to be operated on by said plungers, means for controlling the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to cause said plungers to move forwar to operate on said bar, means for controlling the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to move said hollow plunger forward with said second plunger in its rearmost position therein, means for increasing the fluid pressure in said cylinder to move said second plunger forward in said hollow plunger against the vork while the periphery of said work is held by said hollow plunger, means for controlling .the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to relieve the pressure in said cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder alined with said first mentioned cylinder and communicating with a source of fluid pressure, an auxiliary hollow plunger in said auxiliary cylinder, said auxiliary hollow plunger being connected with said first mentioned hollow plunger, said auxiliary plunger being forced back by the fluid pressure in said auxiliary cylinder when the pressure in the main cylinder is relieved, thereby returning said hollow plunger to its rearward main cylinder.
f). in upsetting press comprising a cylinder communicating with a source of' fluid pressure. a hollow plunger therein, itself constituting a cylinder for a second plunger and comiminicating with said Cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, an auxiliary cylinder alined with said first mentioned cylinder and communicating with a constant source of fluid pressure, an' auxiliary hollow plunger in said auxiliary cylinder communicating with the interior of said hollow pnngcr in front of thc :forward position of said second plunger thereiinsaid auxiliary hollow plunger being connected with the first mentioned hollow plunger, means for controllingu the counnunication between said first mentioned cylinder and source of fluid pressure `to move thc hollow plunger' forward in its cylinder, means for controling said comn'iunication to more the second plunger forward in said hollow plunger, means for controlling said communication t0 relieve the pressure in said cylinder, whereby said second source of fluid pressure moves said second plunger rearwardly in the hollow plunger and moves said hollow plunger rearwardly in its cyiinder.

An upsetting press con'iprising a cylinder communicating with a. source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger therein itself constituting a cylinder for a second plunger and communicating with the interior of said cylinder, a second plunger sidable in said hollow plunger, said hollow plunger having an annular die on the end thereof and said second die fitting snugly in the opening of said annular die and the `faces of said dies being flush with each other when said second plunger is in its rearmost position in said hollow plunger, means for controlling the communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to cause said hollow plunger to move forward whereby both of said dies operate on the work, and means for controlling said fluid pressure to move said second plunger forward after the hollow plunger has completed its movement `and is held against the periphery of the work.

An upsetting` press comprising a c vlinder communicating with a source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger in said cylinder itself constituting a cylinder for a second plungerand communicating with said first mentioned cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, means for holding a bar in position to be operated on by said plungers, means for controlling said communication between said cylinder and said source of fluid pressure to move said plungers forward to operate on said bar, means for controlling said communications 'to return said plungers and means for limiting the return position in said CLT movement of said plungers, whereby said plungers are adapted to limit the feed ot said bar.
12. An upsetting press comprising a cylinder communicating with a source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger therein, the interior of said hollow plunger communicating with said cylinder, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, said plungers operating together to upset the end of' a bar or the like and one of said plungers operating sepa rat-ely against said upset portion, and hydraulic clamping means for said bar, said means comprising a support for the work, a clamping cylinder, a clamping plunger therein movable against the work, an auxiliaryolamping cylinder, an auxiliary plunger therein operatively connected with the clamping plunger in said Clamping cylinder to move` it away from the work, and means for controlling the hydraulic pressure in said clamping cylinder and said auxiliary clamping cylinder to cause said clamping plunger to engage said har and to move away therefrom.

A press composing a cylinder communicating with a source of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger therein, said hollow plunger having an opening in its back portion communicating with a source of Huid presire, a packing in the end of said hollow plunger, a hollow nose piece secured to the end of said hollow plunger, said nose piece having openings therethrough, an annular die secured to lsaid nose piece, a seconjd plunger fitting snugly in said hollow plunger and movable lengthwise thereof, the end of said plunger fitting snugly in the hole in said annular die and means for controlling the supply of fluid pressure to said cylinder and hollow plunger for operating b'oth of said plungers. y

A press comprising a frame including a plurality of longitudinally extending guide rods, a cylinder communie-ating with a souroe'of fluid pressure, a hollow plunger therein. said hollow plunger having an opening in its back portion communicating with a source of fluid pressure, a packing in the end of said hollow plunger, a hollow nose piece secured to the end of said hollow plunger, said nose piece having openings therethrough and having projecting `portions engaging said guide rods, an annular die secured to said nose piece, a second plunger fitting snugly in said hollow plunger and movable lengthwise thereof, the end of said plunger fitting snugly in the hole in said annular die and means for controlling the supply of fluid pressure to said cylinder and hollow plunger for operating both of said plungers.
15. A press comprising a cylinder, a hol-` low plunger therein, a second plunger in said hollow plunger, means for holding a bar or the like in position to be operated on by said plungers, said .plungers being adapted and arranged to be operated together to upset the end of said bar and said second plunger being adapted and arranged to be operated alone to punch out a ring from said upset portion.
