Description
Mnccas ns.
Patented March l0. 1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
GEORGE vv. LOUGEE, OE DOVER, MAINE.
IMPROVEMNT IN MOCCASINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,313, dated March l0, 1874; application filed January 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. LOUGEE, of Dover, in the county of Piseataquis and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moccasins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows aside view of my invention; Fig. 2, a pattern of the bottom 5 Fig. 3, pattern ot' the quarters 5 Fig. 4, pattern of the vamp.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of an improved moecasin-shoe, so constructed that the counter usually employed is done away with, the quarters being attached directly to the bottom. The vamp of the shoe is also peculiar, being cut in two parts, as shown, the edges when they are united being both concave. This fits the vamp to the foot and ankle, and, moreover, permits the upper part of it to be cut from cheaper leather. Instead of the ordinary form of bottom, in which the counter is out with the sole, I employ a modification of the bottom, shown in my application for a patent on a mOccasin-boot, tiled October 15,1873. This ett'ected a. great saving of material over the old form; but in practice was open to some objections, being liable to stretch around the heel. My present device is a great improvement over it, all stretching being prevented, and the economy of stock being equally great. The bottom, shown in this application, as will be readily seen, may be applied equally well to boots and shoes.
Referring to the-drawing, Fig. 1 shows a view of the finished shoe, a being the bottom, b the quarters, and c the vamp, out, as set forth, in two parts, c and c. Fig. 2 shows the pattern of the bottom. This, `as stated, is somewhat like the one shown in the abovementioned application, but not claimed therein, with this change, which constitutes the improvement, that one or more gores or Vs are removed from the edge around the heel. These gores take up all the extra leather which would otherwise have to be gathered into the seam. They are shown at d d d. The quarters are seen vin Fig. ,3, and the vamp in Fig. 4, the parts e c having concave edges c at their line of union, taking up all looseness at the bend of the foot. A st-iiencr, c, if necessary, may be used.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A shoe-moceasin, eut and constructed, substantially as herein set forth, from the patterns shown.
2. A moccasin-bottom cut as described, having one or morei'gores or Vs removed from around the heel part, substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have'hereunto set my hand this 16th day of January, 1874.
GEORGE W. LOUGEE.
Witnesses C. A. EvERE'r'r, L. B. PAINE.
