Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM-J. HUGHES, or oLYDE, onto.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEED-TURNER ATTACHMENTS FOR FLOWS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,@99, dated March 10, 1874; application filed January 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. J. HUGHES, of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful ImproveL ments in Weed-Turner Attachment for Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved attachment or Weedturner for plows.
In the drawings, Figure lis a view of a plow with my invention attached; Fig. 2, a per; spectivc view, Fig. 3 a transverse section, Fig. 4 an under-side or inverted view, and Fig. 5 an end view of the attachment.
My invention consists in a peculiar-shaped funnel-mouthed tube, which is attached to the mold-board side of a plow, extending a little above and forward of the mold-board.
A represents the usual mold-board plow, to which is attached, by means of a rod, B, the weed-turner C. This weed-turner consists of a half-tube, the edge c of which is curved under and rearward, terminating in a point, c. l) is the flaring or funnel-shaped mouth. The weed-turner is provided with several grooves, E, which comlnence from the top and forward part of the turner, and extend in a spiral toward the rear, and terminate at the point c. The edge F of the rear or delivery end of the tube Gis slightly bent or curved inward, from the top downward, and terminates at the rear point c.
As the sod is cut and forced tlpwar'd on the mold-board by the forward action of the plow, the top edge of the sod, with the grass, stub= ble, &c., entersV the mouth of the tube. As the plow continues onward, by the curved form ot' the turner and the spiral grooves therein, the edge of the sod, with the weeds, Smc., is curved and rolled under completely, burying the weeds, &c., under the sod, as it is delivered from the tube and turned over into the furrow by the mold-board.
In practice, this tube or weed-turner is con: structed about eighteen to twenty inches long, and the grooves about one and one-halt" or two inches deep. i
Instead of constructing this attachment in the form above described, fingers, curved in the same manner, may be employed with the same effect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plow attachment herein described, consisting of the tubesection C c c F, provided with the flaring mouth D and spiral grooves E, substantially as and for the purposes dcscribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of January, 1874.
`WILLIAM J. HUGHES.
Vitnessest' B. MEEK, J. H. RHODES.
