' I H. GREEN TOY DAVENPORT Filed Nov. 9, 1922 a j W2 I WPEEU- Patented Feb. 5, 1924.
UNITED STATES HANNES GREEN, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
TOY DAVENPORT.
Application filed November .9, 1922. Serial No. 599,801.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HANNEs GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Davenports;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to convertible toy in davenports and is particularly directed to a toy which may be used either as a divan or as a bed for dolls.
Objects of this invention are to provide a toy davenport which is strong and sturdy in construction and will withstand the un usually severe strains imposed upon this type of toy, which may be extended to provide a bed, and which is provided with a tab having the dual function of a manipulating device by which the seat may be operated and a leg for supporting the seat when in extended position.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the convertible toy davenport.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing the toy in extended position.
The device comprises a davenport having ends 1 and 2, a back 3, and a lower frame. This lower frame is composed of front and rear longitudinal members 4: and 5, and end members 6 and 7 and an intermediate transverse member 8. The members 6 and 7 are each bolted by means of a pair of bolts 9 and 10 to their respective end members. The longitudinal members l and 5 are secured to the members 6 and 7, by means of nails, as shown in the drawing, the nails standing at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the members 4 and 5. The back 46 3 is secured to the end members 1 and 2 in any suitable manner and at the top is secured at each end by means of screws 11.
From the construction thus far given, it
is to be noted that the end members 1 and 50 2 are prevented from splitting by the members 7 and 6 respectively, which extend transversely of these end members. It is also called to attention that the members 6 and 7 are bolted in position so that they may not be pulled free from the end members 1 and 2. The longitudinal members 4: and l 5 do not tend to loosen the. attaching nails, as such nails are driven at right angles to, the longitudinal extent of the members 4 and 5, and thus any strain imposed upon the nails is merely a shearing stress. In this manner, the nails are not subjected to stresses tending to withdraw them, as would be the case had the members 4 and 5 been nailed directly to the end members. It is also called to attention that the means for v preventing the tops of the end members 1 and 2 from pulling away from the back 3, comprises screws 11, which securely retain the parts in position. These fastening means, therefore, are provided in such a manner as to prevent the end members from being pulled free from either the back or the lower frame.
A flap 12 of substantially rigid material is provided and constitutes the seat portion.
It is hinged, as indicated at 13, to the' front upper edge of the lower frame, and is adapted to be swung either into the position shown in Figure 2, or into the position 0 shown in Figure 3. The flap 12 and the back 3 are upholstered, as indicated at 14 and 15 respectively, and the end members and a portion of the lower frame may be similarly covered with finishing material if desired to give an ornamental appearance to the device.
A sheet of flexible material, such as indicated at 17, is secured across the upper portion of the lower frame, so as to form a. support when the device is used as a doll bed, as shown in Figure 3. This sheet of material may extend completely across the flap also, if desired, as shown in Figure 3.
In order to provide for the easy manipulation of the flap or seat portion, a tab is provided substantially centrally of the seat portion, and comprises a loop of rigid wlre 18 provided with right angle extensions 19 which are driven into the flap 12. This tab serves the double purpose of both a manipulating tab, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, whereby the seat may be raised, and as a leg for supporting the seat when the device is in its converted position, as shown in Figure 3. The looped wire 18 may he covered by a strap 20 of finishing material which is passed over the front and rear portions of such tab and which has its free ends secured to the seat portion 12 in any suitable manner. It is to be noted that When the deviceis in its: closed position; that the tab liesagainst the back and is fitted Within the soft or upholstered portion of such back, thereby harmonizing with the ornamental appearance of the davenport, and also being out of the Way and inconspicuously positioned. However, the device is ready for immediate use as a supporting leg, Without any change Whatsoever, when the davenportis-in its extended position;
It Willbe seen, therefore, that a convertible toy davenpo'r t has been provided whiclris of sturdy and ruggeddesign, which is provided with a manipulating tab which is out of the Way when the device is used as a da ven p'ort, and which serves as a rigid supporting leg when the da'venport is in its converted form;
It Will also be seenthat an extremely strong construction results iron-1 the particular manner in which the device is constructed, as given in detail above; and that there" is a maximui'n resistance to any force the'fiap When the davenport is-open, said tab comprising asub'stantially rigid wire having a loop'e'd portion and terminal extensions at right angles thereto and projecting into said flap; and a" covering for the looped portion of said Wire;
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my at Racine; in the county of Racine and State of VVis'consi'n.
HANNES GREEN.
