J. B. FREYSINGER LOCK Filed June 2. 1922 Patented Feb. 5, 1924.
JOHN B. FREYSINGER, F STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Application filed June 2, 1922. Serial No. 565,334.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN B. FREYSINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled 1c in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in look structures and more particularly to those of the jimmy-proof type, one object to of the invention being to provide, in a simple structure, dead-lock bolt or dog members which shall be housed in the strike or keeper and be operable by the locking bolt to engage the lock casing. 7 With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyin drawings; Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a lock structure including the strike or keeper, embodying my improvements, and Figure 2 is a rear face view, partly in section, showing the parts in locked position.
In the drawings, my improvements are illustrated in a lock structure of the rim type, and embodies a lock casing 1 to be secured to a door and a strike or keeper 2 for application to a. door jamb or frame. The lock casing 1 is provided at its forward end with integral ears 3, 3, so spaced apart as to provide a centrally located recess 4 between them, and said ears are provided in their at! inner sides with sockets 5 to receive the bolt ends 6 of dead-locking bolts or dogs 7 housed within the hollow strike or keeper 2.
The strike or keeper 2 is formed with an intermediate portion 8 adapted to be refit ceived between the ears 3 of the lock casing, the free end wall of the keeper portion 8 being intended to be flush with the door jamb and is provided with a suitable slot or opening for the accommodation of a locking bolt 9 carried by the lock casing 1. A
knob 10 is providedfor controlling the operati on of the bolt, (and key-operated means may be also provided), and bolt operating mechanism 11 is provided for the bolt, and
W said mechanism may be such as shown and described in Letters Patent to Reinhold Schoell, January 25, 1921, No. 1,366,706.
The dead-locking bolts or dogs 7 are pivotally mounted on posts 12 within the upper and lower portions of the hollow strike or keeper 2 and are so shaped as to project into the intermediate portion of the latter. The bolt ends 6 of the dead-locking bolts or dogs 7 project upwardly and downwardly respectively through holes in the upper and lower walls of the portion 8 of the keeper and the free ends of said bolts or dogs 7 are beveled as at 13 to be engaged by the leading end of the main locking bolt 9 when the latter is being projected and thus cause the bolt ends 6 to enter the sockets 5 in the ears 3 of the lock casing, the main bolt 9 becoming disposed between the straight inner faces of the dead-locking bolts or dogs and holding them in such dead-locked relation to the lock casing and keeper as to effectually prevent possibility of jimmying.
A spring 14 is mounted on lugs 15 in the strike or keeper 2 and the arms 16 of this spring bear against pins 17 on the deadlocking bolts or dogs, so that the latter will be normally pressed inwardly when the main bolt 9 is in retracted position, the inward throw of said dead-locking bolts or dogs being so limited by a stop block 18 in the keeper that the beveled ends of said bolts or dogs will be in proper position to be engaged by the leading end of the main bolt 9 when the latter is being projected.
Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit of the latter or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth. 95
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2- 1. In a lock, the combination of a lock casing having socketed ears at one end, a 1 keeper having a part to enter the space between said ears, spring retracted dead-looking bolts mounted within said keeper, and a main bolt mounted in the lock casing and cooperable with the dead-looking bolts in the keeper to force said dead-looking bolts into deadlocking relation to the socketed ears on the lock casing.
2. In a lock, the combination of a lock casing provided with ears at one end having sockets in their inner sides, a hollow keeper having a part to enter between said ears, two spring-retracted dead-locking bolts mounted Within the keeper and having beveled portions, said dead-locking bolts having bolt ends which project upwardly and downwardly respectively, means for limiting the retracted throw of said deadlocking bolts, and a main bolt carried by the lock casing and cooperable with the beveled portions of the dead-locking bolts specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
