P. I. M GILLICUDDY CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Sept; 30, 1922 Patented Feb. 5, 1924.
PATRIGK J. MGGILLICUDDY, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application filed September 30, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, PATRICK J. MOGILLI- CUDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to pro vide a dainty and efficient cigarette holder of the type wherein the cigarette is held intermediate its ends by clamp-like members.
The various features of novelty will appear from the detailed description thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cigarette holder showing its applica tion' Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the holder, and
Fig. 3 is a view of the various elements in disassembled relation.
In the drawings a indicates a tubular sup port preferably somewhat flattened. At the top of this support is a standard in the form of bifurcations 5 between which is mounted a lever c, the pivot thereof being indicated at (Z. This lever is curved at one side of its pivot as shown to form one half of the cigarette holding device.
eindicates astem which is slidably disposed within the tubular support. This stern has a slot 7' through which is passed 'a pin 9 8X- tending through the side walls of the said support. This pin and slot arrangement serves to prevent undesirable movement of one end of the stem. The upper end of this stem is curved similarly to the lever 0. At the root of this curvature in a pin i which works in a slot in the end of lever c. This pin and slot connection between lever c and stem 6 permits the lever to be rocked on its pivot as the stem is moved longitudinally in the tubular support.
j indicates a cap or push button which is threaded onto the lower end of the stem e and is indicates a spring which is disposed between the push button and the lower end of the tube a. This spring tends to force Serial No. 591,605.
the push button j away from the adjacent end of the tube and hence to draw the stem 0 in a direction to maintain the curved terminal ends of lever 0 and stem e in abutting relation, or in other words, in relation to firmly hold a ci arette s shown in Fig. l.
T he spring 7: at the lower end of the support a. is preferably housed within a tubular member a which may be of any desired exterior configuration and which may be attached to the lower end of the tubular support a in any preferred manner as being threaded onto the extension 122. In the present instance, this member n is shown as having ornamental wings. If desired, the lower end of the tube a may be reinforced by sleeve g as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. hen it is desired to place a cigarette within the holder, it is merely necessary to press upwardly on the stem e. This operation causes the curved gripping jaws to spring apart as shown in Fig. 2. Upon release of the push button, the jaws will tend to close about the cigarette placed therebetween, as shown in Fig. 1.
The above described holder is simple in construction, eflicient in use, and cheaply manufactured, and furthermore, is in such compact form that it can easily be carried in the purse of pocket.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a tubular support, a curved lever pivoted at one end of said support, a stern slid-ably mounted in said support and having a curved end corresponding to that of the lever, a pivotal and slid able connection between said lever and stem, and a push button on the other end of the stem, movement of the stem causing pivotal movement of the lever.
2. In combination, a tubular support, a stem extending through said support, a push button on one end of said stem, a lever pivoted on said support, said lever and stem having curved terminals whereby to hold a round body between them, and a pivotal and slidable connection between said stem and lever.
3. In combination, a tubular support, a
spring tending to bring the curved ends of said stem and lever toward each other;
4;. In combination, a tubular support, a bifurcation at one end of said support, a 5 lever pivoted between said furcations, a stem slidable in said support, a pin-and-slot c0nnection between the lever and stem, the adjacent ends of the leverand stem being dished to form a circular clamp, and a spring tending to swing said lever 'on its 10 pivot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
PATRICK J. VMOGILLICUDDY.
