citizen of the United States, residing at.
Tarboro, in the county of Edgecombe and 5 State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Float Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and it) useful improvements in float valves, particularly adapted for use in connection with water closet tanks or the like- The primary'object of the invention is to. provide a float valve which is simple and X5 durable in construction, as well as effective and substantially noiseless in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a float valve, the parts of which are simple and of cheap construction and 0:1 pable of being easily and expeditiously assembled for use or taken apart for repairs.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel formycombination .and arrangement .of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accom panying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, the view is one partly in side elevation, and partly in central vertical section, of a float valve constructed in accordance with the present invention, shown operatively associated with a water closet tank.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present invention embodies an elongated upright casing of relatively large diameter and composed of a lower substantially half section 5, and an upper substantially half section 6, the sections being superposed and detachably joined in end to end relation. The lower casing section 5 is provided with a bottom inlet 7 adapted to extend thru a suitable opening provided in the tank 8 and secured therein by means of a nut 9 threaded upon said inlet 7 as shown. The interior of the casing is divided into upper and lower chambers 10 and 11 respectively, by means of a central transverse partition in the form of a disc 12 that has a central opening surrounded by an upstanding substantially frusto-conical valve seat member 13, upon the upper end of which within the chamber 10 is adapted to seat a disc valve head 14 fixed to the lower end of 5 an axial vertical valve rod or stem 15.
The upper end of the lower casing section 5 is enlarged to provide an annular internal shoulder as at 16, upon which the margin of the disc 12 rests, and the lower end of the upper casing section 6 may be 60 provided with an outturned annular flange as at 17 that rests upon the margin of the disc 12 and is rigidly secured against the latter by means of a bushing 18 threaded into the enlarged upper end of the lower casing section 5. In this manner, the casing sections are effectively detachably joined, and the disc 12 is rigidly clamped in place so that a water tight joint is provlded between the casing section. Depending centrally from the disc-12 in alignment with the valve seat member 13 thereof is a rigid tube 19 that terminates some distance above the inlet 7 The stem 15 slidably extends through the top of the upper casing section 6 where the latter is provided with a packing gland 20 to prevent leakage of water about the stem 15 outwardly of the casing section '6, and the upper casing section 6 is provided with a lateral outlet 21 at a point below its upper end,wh'ich outlet has a downturned outer end as indicated at 22 connected with the upper end of a vertical outlet pipe 23 whose lower end terminates in close proximity and directly above the bottom of the tank 8.
Upon one side of the top portion of the upper casing section 6 is an upwardly extending arm 24, to which is pivoted one end of a lever 25, the other end of which is pivoted to one end of a link 26. The other end of the link 26 is pivoted to a float lever 27, that is pivoted adjacent its inner end to a bracket arm 28 rigid with the opposite side of the top portion of the casing section 6 and has a suitable float 29 fixed, upon the outer end thereof. The lever 25 extends through a slot provided in the upper end of the stem 15, and the parts are so related and proportioned as to cause the valve head 14 to seat against the upper end of the seat member 13 when the float 29 is raised to the proper level adjacent the top of the tank 8 as indicated by a dotted line at 30.
In operation, the water entering the inlet 7 will fill the lower casing section 5 and any air within the latter will be trapped between the disc 12 and the lower end of the tube 19 so as to form a cushion. The water will then flow through the tube 19 and valve seat member 13 into the upper casing section 6, any air within the casing section 6 being trapped between the top of the casing section 6 and the outlet 21 of the latter. The water then flows out through the outlet 21 and outlet pipe 23 to the tank, it being noted that the flow of water through the casing is permitted at this time by reason of the fact that the valve head 14 is lifted upwardly ofl of the seat member 13 when the float 29 is lowered. As the level of the water rises in the tank .8, the float 29 will rise therewith so as to cause a downward pull upon the link 26 and lever 25, whereby the stem 15 is caused to move downwardly for engaging the valve head let with the seat member 13 and cutting off further supply of water. lVhen the water is drained or allowed to run from the tank 8, the float 29 will lower so as to cause upward movement of the link 22, lever 25, and stem 15, for liftingvthe valve head 14 off of the seat member 13 and permitting the supply of water to be replenished in the tank.
The air cushions provided beneath the disc 12 and the top of the upper casing sectiontl, due to the air trappcd'therein, will result in a substantially noiseless action of the valve.
From the above description, it is believed that the construction and operation, as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a float valve of the character described, a vertical elongated casing of relatively large diameter divided'into upper and her, and provided with a rigid depending central tube projectingdownwardly into the 7 lower chamber of the casing,the upper casing chamber having a lateral outlet port between the upper and lower ends thereof, and a float operated valve for opening and closing said valve seat member.

A float valve comprising a lower casing enlarged at its upper'end to provide an internal annular shoulder, a disc resting upon saidshoulder and provided with a central fork surrounded by a valve seat member, an upper casing section havingran outwardly directed flange upon its lower end resting upon the margin of the disc, a gland threaded into the enlarged upper end of the lower casing section and clamping the lower end of the upper casing section, and a disc upon the shoulder of the lower casing section, said disc having a rigid. central tube co-axial with the valve seat'member of the disc and projecting downwardly into the lower casing section, the upper casing sec tion being provided with a lateral outlet between its ends, and a float operated valve member operating in the upper section of the casing above the valve seat member for opening and closing the latter. 7
