U D-[ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
GAME.
I Application filed November 5,1921. Serial No. 513,096.
' To allwhomitmay com-em:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS, a subject of the King of Great" Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada,
have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Games; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in games.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a game based on the fundamental principles of the ordinary game of poker wherein a plurality of cards are indicated on a board with means provided upon the cards for'engaging and holding a ball,- a series of which, preferably five in number, are passed over the surfacesgof the cards, being caught and held upon the cards to indicate various things correspondin to I that of the above mentioned game of po er.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for projecting the balls upwardly toward the upper end of the board from whence they roll by gravity toward the lower end thereof, being deflected along:
different lines by means which are attached to the board, causing them to roll over the surfaces of the various card indications until they," become caught and held in such may contain indication marks designating the value. of the various points to be used in playing the game.
A still further object of the invention is I the provision of means for elevatin o end of the board so thattheballs will roll across the surface thereof.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a game such'as above referred" to which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use, andreadilyoperated.
Another object of the invention is to pro.-
vide a game which is equally as well adapted for older persons as it is for children.
With the above and other objects in view,
the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, cmnbinations and arrangements of parts tobe hereinafter, more fullyv described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gam board constructed in accordance with the present invention;
the board surface showing a modified form of the retaining means for theballs including1 three pins arranged toengage the same; an g Figure 8 is a detail sectional view showing the pins in side elevation. Referringnow to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates in general my improved which is of substantially rectangular formation, being rounded at its upper end as at 12. A flange 13 extends entirely around the board projecting upwardly from the surface thereof to prevent the displacement of the game board which comprises abottom 11 balls from the board while playing the game. A covering shown at 14 covers the upper surface of the board within the rectangular portion thereof and has marked thereon suitable indications which designate the various cardsin a deck of playing cards, such as shown at 15. A suitable retaining device 16 is placed centrally of each of the cards and is designed to engage one of a plurality of balls 17. A channel 18 is provided at one side of the apparatus and within this channel is mounted a spring actuated plunger 19 provided with a suitable handle 20 by means of which the said plunger can .be operated to project the balls 17 upwardly toward the curved end 12 of the board allowing them to roll downwardly between the baflle members 21 -which deflects the balls in various directions, thus making the game one of purely chance. A suitable pad 22 may be attached to one side of the curved formation is shown at 25 and is secured in position to one of the side flanges 13 by the dowels 26, which form a channel 27 in which a scale may be placed, such as shown at 28 indicating the value of the Various points which the cards will indicate.
In playing the game the cards count the same as in an ordinary game of poker in the following order :One pair, two pair, three of a kind or triplets, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, and straight flush.
The operator first places all or one or more of the balls 17 in the projecting device in advance of the plunger 19 and by drawing the handle 20 rearwardl the balls are projected toward the curvec end 12 of the oard and allowed to fall downwardly passing over the various card indications until they are caught and held centrally of the cards. The, player then determines what points he has made by seeing whether he has gotten one pair, two pair, three of a kind, etc.
One or more trials may be had by the vplayer, that is, after projecting the balls first, he may remove thosehe does not wish to retain and may project the balance over again over the surface of the board which would correspond to discarding and drawing; additional cards in the usual game of po er.
- Any suitable elevating device shown at 29 may be attached to the curved end of the board for giving the same the proper elevation for the best operation.
From the foregoing description, taken in .connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a game board 1s provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
A certain amount of skill is required in playing the game by pulling the handle 26 in such manner as to direct the balls with different force against the curved portion of the flange 13.
Having thus fully described the invention,
'what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is The herein described game board comprising a body portion having a curved upper end, means for elevating one end of the game board, a flange extending around said board, a pad attached to the flange, deflectors secured to the board, a projection mechanism at one side of the board, balls movable over the surface of the board, a covering hand.
