Application filed October 24, 1921. Serial No. 509,886.
T all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY N. SoRENsoN, ay citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have made an invention appertaining to a Door Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, `such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
This invention relates to hinges of the type particularly intended for use in connection with the doors of automobiles.
An object of the invention is the provision of a simple, strong and inexpensive hinge of the character described which is capable of being easily and quickly attached to a vehicle body frame in a novel and highly eliicient manner.-
A further object of the invention is the provision of a double hinge for carrying two doors on the same side of a vehicle body with the body attaching member of the hinge formed in a single piece serving for the hinge of two doors and adapted to eX- tend from one door opening to another.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the hangingof doors in vehicle bodies and to lessen the labor incident thereto. Y
The invention is fully described in the. follojwing specification, and while, in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Fig. l is a Vfragmentary side elevation of i a plate 12 adapted to be securedby screws `or in any other suitable manner to the inan automobile body equipped with a hinge embodying the invention and with a portion of the body broken away toeXpose the hinge. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top view of the hinge embodying the invention with one door member of the hinge in closed position and the other door member thereof in partial open `position with respect to the body yniember of the hinge. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspec' tive view of the double body member of the hinge.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a 4vehicle body having the front and rear doors 2 and 3, respectively, closing openings theremand hung at adjacent edges of said open- Aing 'so that the front door opens rearwardly and the rear door opens forwardly." The vframe structure of the vehicle body and over which the outer casing t is drawn is provided with the door jambs `or parts 5 to which the body members of the hinges are attached.
The Ybody member of the hinge embodying ythe invention comprises a jamb-plate 6 of sufficient length to span the space between the front and rear door openings, and this plate is provided with screw receiving openlings 7 to adapt it to be secured to the body nating short of the plate to provide a space 9 therebetween but being preferably on substantially a plane with the upper edge of the plate as shown. In the present instance the member 8 is integral with the plate 6 being struck and bent inward therefrom and form- Ving the plate with an opening l0 above the lower leg of the member. Each hook member 8 is provided near the inner end .of its 'lower Vleg with an opening ll. When a jamb-plate 6 is secured to the frame of a vehicle bodythe hookmembers 8 thereof project in sockets provided in the jamb posts 5 with the outer ends of their sockets opening to and facing the respective door openings.
Each door member of a hinge comprises neredge of a. door and having an L`-arm 13 projecting fromthe inner'edge thereof a distance to adapt the 'arm to project into the socket of a hook member 8 when the associated door is in closed position, the free end or fore-arm portion of the arm I3 then extending'lengthwise of the hook member 8 to the plate end thereof and provided with a downwardly extending pivot stud 14 for fitting into the opening 1l ofthe socket member'S with which it is associated. It
lOl)
is evident that when the door plate 12 is at right angles to the jamb-plate 6 the inner portion of lthe Varm 13 will project away from the associated socket memberl 8 lengthwise of the jamb-pirlate 6 and that, the
Vfore-arm portion of the'tarm 13 will project toward the plate 6 atsubstantially a right angle thereto. When the door is swung outward to open position the inner angled portion of the arm 13 will swing outward around the adjacent free edge ofthe jambplate 6, and when the door has reached predetermined full open position it will be stopped or prevented from furtherv opening bythe outer angled portion of the arm l13 vstriking at its inner edge against the Aportionof the plate 6 without thefsocket 8. When the door `hinge-member 12, -13 isf in full open position it may be disengaged from its socket member 8 by raising `it lto withdraw the pivot 'studia from its openiing 11, such raising movement of they hinge member being permitted by reason of the space 9 betweenthe upper free end portion of the socket member'8 andthe plate 6 being of a width to permit an upward removal of the arm 13 therethrough. The upper arm of the socket member 8 is adapted, however, to overhangthe arm 13 when the'latter isV in any other than full or Ysubstantially full open position so that the door member of aV hinge can only'be placed in or @removed from engagement -with a socket member 8 vwhen the 'door member is in substantially full open position.
lt is evident that while a single hinge is shown in Fig.A 1, two or more hingesmay be provided for a set of doors. IIt will, of course, beunderstood that after -af'hinge member 6 hasbeen secured .to a bodyjframe the outside casing 4- of the Yframe is mounted'over the hinge toV conceal the same from view.V Y .i
It is apparent that by `extending -the .fjamb-plate 6 of a hinge lengthwise of the body instead of cros'swise thereof, as is customarilythe case, and t-hat'by making it of suiicient length to `be Asecured to more vthan one upright or post 5 of the frame, that it makesa strong and more rigid attachment to the body than would otherwise be Y the case, and that by utilizing a single body platein'a hanging of'two doors, the cost of, door hanging isr materially lessened andY the labor incident thereto reduced from that required where separate hinge members are used for each door. v
Another feature of my invention which is of considerable value in Vconnection with the hangingrof a door isthe' vertical adjustvability of the socket members 8, the same being bendable to adjust them to standin a vhorizontal plane, which is theplane of opening movement of a door, irrespective ofthe slope or inclination of the portion of the not limited to any specific construction, ar-
rangement or form of the parts as it is capable of embodiment in Vnumerous forms without departing.from` the spirit of the claims. I Y f j Y Having thus Y described my invention, what ll claimk as new and desire to secure by `Letters Patent, is,--
1.- A hinge of the class described compris'inga jamb-plate for attaching to a` side of a door jamb, a socket member projecting inwardly from theV plate adjacent Vto the door opening end thereof, with its' socket facing and open to the door opening, the socket member having anV opening at the top of its plate end and having a pivot receiving hole in its bottom portion below such top opening, and an L-shaped projecting hinge member for attaching to a' door edge and having its'outer angled end lying in the socket member longitudinallythereof when the projecting member is in closed position', said projecting member having a pivot projecting downward from its free end portion into the hole of the socket member, the rprojecting member being removable upward from engagement with the socket member through its top opening when swung to ajpredetermined open position relative to the socket member.
2. The combination with means forming a Ydoor opening with a door jamb at a side edge thereof, and a door mounted in the opening, of a hinge plaie secured to the outer lside of the jamb, a socket memberV bendably projecting inwardly from the plate adjacent to the door Iopening'end thereof with its socket facing and open to the door opening, the socket member having an opening at the top of its plate end and havinO' a 'iivot receivin hole in its bottom portion below such top opening, a second Yplate secured to the inner edge of thev door,
and an L-shaped projectingl member extending kfrom the inner edge portion of the door plate and `having its outer angled end lying in'the'socket member longitudinally thereof when the door is: in closed position, said projecting member having-a pivot projecting downward from its free end portion into theV 1 hole of the 'socket member, the projecting member being removable upward from enisoV gagement with the socket member through its top opening when the door is swung to a predetermined open position.
3. ln combination with means forming a door opening with a j amb-post at an edge thereof and a door mounted in the opening, of a hinge comprising a jamb-plate secured to the outer side of the jamb-post and having a hooked member projecting inwardly therefrom to form a socket which is open to and faces the door opening, the terminal of the hooked member being disposed at the upper side of the member in spaced relation to the plate, and the shank portion of the hook having a pivot receiving opening therein adjacent to the plate, the hooked member being capable of vertical angular adjustment with respect to the plate, and an L-shaped projecting member secured to the door edge and projecting therefrom in the plane of the door and then outwardly at substantially .a right angle to such plane, and adapted to fit at its outer angled end in the member socket, the free end of the projecting member having a pivot stud projecting therefrom into the socket member hole, the projecting member being removable upward from engagement with the socket member through the space between the plate and free end of the hooked member when the door has been swung to a predetermined open position.
