IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-LASTS,
Specification, forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,189, dated March 3, 1874; application filed December 1o, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN G. DE GoUEsEY and THOMAS RIDDELL, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Lasts, of Which the following isla specieation Our invention relates to improvements in sewing-lasts, tobe used in connection with the Well-known McKay shoesewin g machine; and the object of our invention is to insure the turning of the last in a proper determinate course during the stitching of the sole to the upper, by forming in the edge of the last a 1 channel, a, adapted to the hook B, as shown in the sectional view, Figure l, of the aecompan ying drawing. In using the McKay sewing-machine, dependence for the proper guidance and move ment of the last is placed on a hook, B, over the turned-up end of which is placed the edge of the sole, and as this edge must yield more or less, the stitching of the sole to the upper becomes irregular, and the sole is more or less Warped, especially when the stitching is conducted by careless operators. This difficulty is obviated by the undercut groove a, which receives the end of the hook B, the groove thus forming a determinate unyielding guide, which must insure the proper turning of'the last during the stitching ot' the sole'to the upper. We prefer to make this groove by forming a rabbet at the bottom of the last throughout its edge, and securing to the said bottom a flanged plate, D, of metal, in Which are two or more holes, d d, for the reception of pieces of leather which are driven tightly into the said holes, and which receive the nails for temporarily securing the sole to the last.
We claim- 1. A sewing -last having throughout its lower edge a groove, a, undercut, and adapted to a hook, B, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the rabbeted Wooden portion of the last and a plate, D, having an inwardly-projecting flange, which, with the rabbet, forms an undercut groove, as set forth.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence ot' two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN G. DE COURS EY. THOMAS RIDDELL.
