HAND PROTECTOR FOR WIND INSTRUMENTS.
Application filed December 28, 1922. Serial No. 609,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. HANS J. BACH, a citizen of the Austrian Republic, and residing in New York city, New York, and whose post-otlice address is 62 Ditmas Avenue, Astoria, Long Island, New York. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Protectors tor \Vind Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to a flexible protective and grip and covering for wind instruments, such as cornets, trombones, and the like.
The object of the invention is to furnish a device, which shall protect the instrument from wear, soiling and tarnishing by the hand, keeps the hand and fingers of the player from the benumbing eflect of contact with cold metal in winter, and keep the instrument from freezing up. It provides, moreover, a better grip between the hand and the instrument, without too much effort and the resulting fatigue, all this being accomplished without interference with the movable parts of the instrument.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1, shows, in side elevation, a cometwith the cover in place-the cover carrying three protecting sleeves in addition to the body part.
Fig. 2, a similar view from the reverse side of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a transverse section on line of Fig. 1, the guard or cover having but one sleeve attached thereto.
Fig. 4, is a top view of the flattened out cover shown in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5, is a section of Figure 4:, along the line 55.
In Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the cover or guard carries only one sleeve in addition to the body.
The cover may be made of leather, cloth or any other suitable material flexible enough to con torm with its full and cut out portions, to the various parts to be protected. The body 1, of the cover, may be lined with any suitable (preferably soft) material 1. The lining and the outside being stitched together and the abutting edges provided with means for holding said edges in operative relation. These holding means may consist of eyelets and lacings, or buttons, hooks, etc.
Out of the body part 1 of the cover are cut the portions 2 and 3. These cut out portions are shaped to surround respectively the end tubes of the instrument adjacent to the piston box and have free flaps which told around the respective-tubes. To the body pieces, encircling the out out portion, are attached sleeves; the sleeve 4 is attached to the body surrounding the cut out portion 2, and the sleeve 5 to the part surrounding the cut out portion 3; to the top of the body piece there is attached the sleeve 6.
The cover is applied by folding the body part 1 about the valve box 10 of the instrument (Figs. 1 and 2), the sleeve 4 fitting about the first bent end tube A at 3, of the instrument, the sleeve 5 encircling the sec- 0nd end tube B, and the sleeve 6, the be ginning of the bell C of the cornet or other instrument. Lacings 9 and eyelets 7, or the equivalents thereof, hold the cover in place. It is understood, of course, that in the case of instruments differing in size and shape, the size and relative position of the cover and sleeves will be correspondingly moditied, without departing from the spirit of; the invention. In Figures 3, 4 and 5, the sleeves 5 and 6 are done away with. In other respects the cover of Figures 3, 4 and 5, is like that of Figures 1-2. The body portion 1, with lining 1 has its ends provided with fastening means. such as eyelets 7. The body is cut out at 2, so as to form two are shaped flaps 2" and 2 and free ends 2 andv 2, the are shaped portions of the flaps surrounding the respective end tubes B of the instrument when the guard, cover is applied. At the other end the cut out portion 3 surrounds tubes A and carries a wing 4 covering a part of said tubes, the wing provided with eyelets 7 to enable the ends of the wing to be pulled together by lacing strings.
Having thus described the invention, it will be understood that changes can be made therein without departing from the princi ple of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A protecting coverv for cornets and similar instruments having a piston box, comprising a body of flexible material hav ing a contour which fits the piston box of the instrument to be protected, in combination with means for holding the cover in. place.
2. A protecting cover for cornets and similar instruments having a piston box, comprising a body of flexible material having a contour which fits the piston box of the instrument to be protected, said body having a sleeve connected with the body, in combination with means for holding the cover in place.
3. A flexible hand grip and cover for cornets or similarly shaped wind instruments having a piston box, comprising a body portion which encircles the piston box, three sleeves connected to said body por tion which sleeves encircle the two end tubes of theinst-rument and the part ofthe bell portion adjacent to the piston box, in combination with means for holding the body and sleeves in operative relation, substantially as set forth.
4. A flexible hand grip for cornets and the like having av piston box, comprising a body portion which embraces the piston box, said body portion being cut out at both ends, said cut out portions surrounding the respective end tubes of the instrument, said body provided with a sleeve portion connected to the body at one end, adjacent to one cut out portion, said sleeve provided with fastening means at the sides of the sleeve; the sleeve being thereby provided with means to surround and be fastened to one set of end tubes, adjacent to the piston box.
