Description

Jan. 22, 19246 M. S. FULEY STOP HINGE Filed May 6, 1921 Patented Jan. 22, 1924.
STATES 1,481,742 PATENT OFFICE.
mAnL'oN s; RILEY, or GRAND sums, MICHIGAN.
STOP HINGE.
Application filed May 6,
' To all whom it army concern:
Be it known that I, MAHLoN S. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of 'Kent and State of Michi an, have invented certain new and usefu? Improvements in astop Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
The object of the invention'is to provide a simple and eflicient stop hinge suitable for mobiles and the like in reference to some.
types of which'straps are employed as limiting means, and in connection with doors generally and more especially door windows,
or swinging windows, sometimes termed French windows where it is desirable under certain conditions to vary the extent of opening of the window or to check the opening movement thereof at different angles from the normal .or closed position; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction, combination and relation of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of the hinge applied in the operative position to a swin'ging door or closure.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken through the hinge transversely in the plane of the limiting bar or element. I t
Figure 3 is a view of the hinge detached, showing thenormally concealed surface of one of the leaves upon which ,is mounted a checking device or bolt for selectively engz-iging openings in the limiting bar or strap to vary the extent of relative swinging movement of the hinge leaves.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of 1921. Serial No. 467,313.
a hinge having a limiting member consisting of a rod provided with terminal ball heads or stops suitable for automobile doors and for general use.
The hinge proper having the relatively swinging leaves and 11 connected by the pivot pin ,12 may be of any desired design,.size and shape to suit the purpose for which it is used and may be secured to the 'frame or jamb or casing and to thefdoor or closure by any 'suitable or any preferred means. Arranged in operative relation with the leaves is a limiting bar or element 13, preferably rigid and of arcuate form having terminal stops or offsets or heads '14,,
said limiting bar extending'slidably through openings 10 and 11 in the leaves and free for movement therein within the range of the length of the bar. 4
Obviously the bar may be made of such a length or the interval between the stpps carried thereby maybe of such an extent as to allow the desired amplitude or range of swinging movement of the hinge leaves, and in addition there may be provided means for varying the extent of relative movement of the wings as by providing upon one of the wings, mounted preferably upon the rear or normally covered surface thereof, a checking device consisting for example of a bolt or pin 15 slidingly mounted in a guidel6 and actuated by a spring 17 for terminal engagement selectively with a series of openings 18 in the limiting strap or bar, said pin or bolt having a laterally projecting operating arm 18 projecting terminally within reach beyond the edge of/the leaf as shown in Figure 1 to permit of adjustment or engage ment with different openings in the limiting bar. The operating arm extends through a guide slot 19 in the wall of the guide and said slot may be provided with an off set or shoulder 20 for lockingthe bolt or pin in a retracted position when it is ,desin .i to utilize the full length of the limiting bar.
As shown in Figure 4 however the adjustable means may be omitted when a' simplified form of hinge is desired as for example in connection with the door of an automobile body, where a, uniform extent of swinging movement of the door is desirable, and also as indicated in said Figure the bar may consist of a round or similar v rod provided with terminal ball heads 21 to l ltl covered surfaces of the hinge wings 22. As indicated and as will be obvious, the Wood work of-the dooror other closure and the jamb or casing must be cut away or cavitied as indicated at 23 to give clearance for the movement of the ends of the limiting memher or bar. 7
Obviously by utilizing a metallic bar as a limiting means any desired strength may be secured to withstand the strainsto which the hinge may be subjected in the peculiar use to which it may be applied, without risk of breakage or bending.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A hinge having relatively movable leaves, a bar extending from one of the leaves in a plane transversely thereof and transversely of their 'pintle, the other leaf having a slot through which said bar loosely passes, and a fastening means on the attaching surface of the slotted leaf engageable with said bar.
2. A hinge having relatively movable leaves, a bar extending in a plane transversely thereof and loosely in slots through both of said leaves, an offset guide on the attaching surface of !one of the leaves, a pin slidable longitudinally of the hinge and mounted in said guide, said bar having a plurality of transverse openings, a spring in said guide to urge said pin toward said bar to engage. said openings, an arm operable to depress said pin, and the guide having an elongated slot in which the pin operates.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
