A. GUERRA FILM WINDING REEL Filed Dec. 14. 1922 Patented den. 22, 1924;,
ldbllii i lfi STATES raises anronso GUEBRA, or Leanne, TEXAS,
FILIl-LWINDING REEL;
Application filed December 14, i922. Serial No. 606,772.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALnoNso GUERRA, a citizen of the Republic of Mexico, residing at Laredo, in the county of Webb and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filmd vinding Reels, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to winding reels -tor motion picture films and it has for an object to provide a novel type out reel having improved'film gripping means and from which the wound film may be readily removed when desired.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a transverse sectional view of my improved reel, this view being taken on th line 11 of Fig. 2. s
Fig. 2 is an axial sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary axial sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 on Fig. 1.
My improved reel comprises a pair of end disks 10 each having a rib 11 fixed to one face to localize it with respect to the drum or core on which the film winds. The ribs extend diametrically oi. th disks and are of a length corresponding to the drum diameter. 7 Y
The drum or core is made up of a pair of arcuate members 14 having segmental end walls 15, these end walls being provided with inturned flanges 16 which seaton the opposed sides of the ribs 11. The disks 10 are secured to the drum by means of screws 18 whose shanks pass freely through suitable holes in the former and are threaded into the flanges 16. The ribs 11 and flanges 16 are arranged to form central openings such as 19 to receive the shaft on which the reel is mounted, and which may be arranged in any suitable manner to cause the reel to be rotated by the said shaft.
As will be apparent, with the drum made up of a pair of arcuate sections,.longitudinal slots are provided through which the film end may be inserted to be engaged by gripping elements mounted in the drum.
These gripping elements comprise a number of fiat, longitudinally extending bars 22, which are formed with lugs or ears 23 whereby they are mounted on the outer ends of pairs of radially extending parallel links 24 whose inner ends are pivoted to bars 25 extending fixedly between the drum ends. Springs 26 press against the links 24 and normally urge the gripper bars toward the inner wall of the drum. In Fig. 3 I have indicated the film end at F.
Each of the gripper bars 22 has one end radially inturned as at 22, this end registering with an aperture 28 extending through both the adjacent drum end and disk so that by pressing against said end 22 with a suitable tool, a screw driver for convenience, the bar 22 may be swung away from the drum wall for insertion of the film end. To guide the film end onto the gripper bar the flanges 16 may b formed with suitable guide projections 16.
With this construction the film can be easily removed, without unwinding, from the reel as by loosening the screws 18 and re moving the disks 10 the drum will collapse and the film end can be readily detached and the roll of film taken off the drum.
' Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect byLetters Patent of the UnitedStates is as follows:
l. A film winding reel comprising a pair ot disks, and a drum comprising a pair of arcuate collapsible sections, and film gripping means arranged within the drum and movable with relation thereto.
2. A film winding reel comprising a pair of end disks having shorter diametric ribs on adjacentfaces, a drum comprising a pair of arcuat sections having segmental end walls formed with inturned flanges adapted to seat on said ribs, and screws securing said disks to said flanges.
3. In a film winding reel, a drum having a longitudinal slot, and resilient film gripping means within the drum, comprising a gripper bar, a pair of parallel links on which said bar is mounted, and a spring urging said. gripper bar to operative position.
4:. In a film winding reel, a drum having.
alongitudinal slot, and resilient film gripping means within the drum, comprising a gripper bar, a pair of parallel links on I which said bar is mounted, and a spring urgingsaid gripper bar to operative position, said drum having an opening in one end thereof in registry with the adjacent end of said bar to permit of access to said bar to move the same longitudinally, to release it.
5. In a film Winding reel, drum having a longitudinal slot, and resilient film gripping means Within the drum comprising a gripper bar a pair of parallel links on which said bar is mounted, and a spring urging said gripper bar to operative position, said drum having an opening in one end thereof in registry with th adjacent end of said bar to permit of access to said bar to move the same longitudinally, to release it, said bar having its end laterally turned, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
ALFONSO GUERRA.
