My invention relates to new and7 useful 'improvements in lifting jacks, and more especiallyY to a lifting jack which is relatively small in size, and used principally for lifting automobiles, trucks or other devices of similar size or weight.
One of the principal objects of the in vention is to provide a lifting jack, rela: tively small in size, compact in form; quickly and' easily operated7 andv capable of sustaining a relatively heavy load.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a lifting ljaclr which may be quickly and easily operated to liftlthe object desired, and after being so operated7 a frictional member may be brought into-ac-y tion to thereby further retain the object in its lifted position and; thus relieve the main pawl or catch ofthe load.
Still another object of the invention. is to provide a lifting jack which may be readily operated to lift the load, after which the frictional element is brought into contact with the elevating post or stem ofthe jack to retain the load. When itis desired to lower the load. the main catch will be first released, then the frictionalelement slightly released and the load Awill then descend slowly or rapidly as desired, Vdepending upon the amount of release movement applied to the frictional element.

A further aperture 24 is formed in the krear of the standard as may be clearly seen in Fig. 4 about which is the boss 25, to which is secured the internally threaded housing 26 to receive the post oi the externally threaded trictional member 27. The post has the groove 28 formed on its inner end, and a frictional bloclr 29 is locked by the set screw 30 thereto. This li'rictional block 29 slidingly lits within the aperture 24 and is provided with the small cut out portion 31 on its rear, for the reception ot the inner end of the post as before mentioned. 0n the outer end of the trictional member is the small wheel 32 so that the 'frictional block 29 on it may he withdrawn from within the hollow casing or may be advanced ytherein for contact with a plane taco of the lifting post 33, now to be described.
This lifting post is also rectangular in cross-section, slidingly dts within the hollow standardr2, and has the head which may be integral therewith, or may be tastened to the same. On the two faces ot this post 33 are Vformed angular detents 35 while on the front face of the post are 'formed similar detents 36, the detents in both in` stances, not quite extending across the entire iaces of the post, butin alignment.

Referring again for the movement to the standard 2, there will be noted at the opposite sides thereof and near Vits top the openings 42, having the lower tapered walls 43, the taper ot these being substantially that of the vincline oi1 the inner sliding faces ot the pawl 40.k The pawl 40 is also hingedly attached to the upper end of the guide meniber 37 and as it is spring-pressed, its tend-y ency is to normally extend inwardly so that when the guide member 37 is lirst raised, the inner face of the pawl will slide upwardly and inwardly on the tapered surface 43 of vthe opening 42, the nose thereot engaging the det-ents formed in *he sides oi" the post and then continue in a vertical. or upright pat-hot movement.
As betere mentioned, there are two guide members 37 and two pawls 40 attached thereto, so that the post is lifted simultaneously from its opposite sides when the lever l5 operated. For each guide clement also, there is an upper bearing 44 which encircles the pper portion et the long leg 3), which leg is rectangular in cross-section at this point. The lower end of the lo leg 3,9 is rounded and passes through a bearing 46 against which abuts the spring 47, its lower end abutting against a collar 48 on the ieg, which collar may be iield in pla e ny the pin 49. The purpose ot this springis to return the guide clement and its pawl to its normal position after the gui-:le element has been raised and the handle then ele-- vated bythe operator. As will be remembered, there is formed on the face oi? the standard the wings 7 and they, in turn, have the inwardly extending :flanges S which form bearings for the guide membre 3T during their upward and downward movcment.
As tar as the specification has proceeded. it will be seen that on the operation of the handle l5 in a downward direction, the rams ll on the opposite sides of the standard will contact with the short legs 38 of the guide members 37 and as these guide members are raised, the pawls being spring-pressed. will slide upwardly along thetapered wall 43 and inwardly through the openings 42, and engage the detente 36 on the side oi the post and raise the same. As the post raised each step, the main retaining pawl 2l will be forced outwardly as the'pawi rides ng the surface ot the dctents and will then springinwardly and retain the post while the handle being moved upwardly while the guide members lare retracted by the sprinns 47 and the pawlg 40 slide downwardly and outwardly over the tapered walls 43.

A lifting jack eomprising'a base, a hollow standard mounted on said base, a lifting post in said standard provided with detentsl on a plurality of its faces, said standard ,being provided with openings in its sides, said openings provided with tapered lower walls, guide members slidingly mounted on the outer sides of said standard, said guide members eaeh provided with a short leg` yand a long leg, spring-pressed pawls secured to the upper ends of said guide members for cooperation with said post. means operable with the short leg of said ide members for elevating the same, said spring-pressed pawls passing through the openings in said standard as they slide upwardly along the lower tapered walls thereof and engaging detente in said post to elevate the same, a retaining pawl engaging other detents in said post for holding said post during its step by step movement, and independent frictional means for engaging :i face of said post so that the same may be locked at a desired height.

A lifting jack comprising a base, a hollow standard mounted on saidbase.l a lifting post in said standard provided with detents therein, an opening formed in said standard having a tapered lower wall, a guide member mounted on the side of said Y standard having` a pawl mounted at the upper end thereof, the same being springpressed and adapted to slide inwardly within said opening as its rides over the tapered wall to engage the detents in said post, means for raising said sliding element and pawl upwardly within said opening to thereby elevate the post, a retaining pawl for engaging other detents in said post, means for retracting said last mentioned pawl, independent locking means in the form of a frictional element for engaging a face of said post, and means for withdrawing said frictional element from contacting with said post to thereby lower the same.

A lifting jack comprising a base, a hollow standard mounted on said base, a lifting post in said standard provided with detents in three of its faces, the fourth face presenting a plane surface, two guide members slidingly mounted on the opposite sides of said standard, each of said guide members being provided with a short and long leg, a sain mounted on said standard for engaging the said short legs to thereby elevate said guide members, bearings formed on said standard for guiding the long legs of each guide member, a further bearing located opposite the short legs for retaining 'he same in their sliding position when said guide members are elevated; means clon-V nerrted to thelong legs of eac-h guide members for returning the guide. members to their normal position, eaeh of said guide members provided with an inwardly moving pawl, said standard provided in its sides and near its upper ends with openings, the lower walls of said openings being tapered so that as said pawls raise and lower, they will move inwardly and outwardly into and out of cooperation with said lifting post, a retaining pawl for holding the post in its step b-y step upward movement, A,and means for positively withdrawing the same, said standard also provided with a furtherY opening and an independently operated frietional element movable therein for engaging the plane surface of said lifting post to thereby lock the lifting post in a desired position.
