CONCEALED STITCl- ED COLLARET FOR UNDERGARMENTS Filed May 29 1919 U Nil? Q S T PATENT OFFICE ROBERT E. HUGHES, IR, 013 UTICA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOE,TO UNION SPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
CONCEALED STITCHED COLLARET FOR UNDERG-ARMENTS.
Application filed May 29, 1919. Serial No. 300,649.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. HUGHES,
J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concealed Stitched Collarets for Undergarments, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements 'in a concealed stitched collaret for undergarments, which collaret is formed from a folded strip of fabric.
An object of the invention is to provide a collaret strip which is stitched to the neck of the garment by stitches which are in part concealed by the collaret strip at one face of the garment, and which stitches at the other face of the garment cover and conceal the edge, of the collaret strip.
In the drawings which show by way'of illustration one embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 shows more or less diagrammatically the neck portion of a garment having my improved collaret strip applied thereto; v
Figure 2 is a view more or less diagrammatic and in section, showing one form of the in vention for uniting the collaret strip to the neck of the garment;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view in a plane along the needle thread loops of the concealed needle thread;
Figure 4 is a similar view but showing the edge of the collaret strip inturned at both faces of the garment;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2, but
ed by a tape rather than by threads;
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 1,
showing a slightly modified form of the invention in that the needle loops are connectwherein the collaret strip is stitched to the garment in a single operation.
In carrying out the invention, the collaret strip is folded intermediate its side edges and one of the side faces of the'strip is inturned. A needle thread lies along the in turned portion and between the inturned portion and the adjacent face of the collaret strip. This needle thread is formed into loops which extend through the inturned portion, body portion of the I garment and the collaret stri at the other face of the garment. arallel with said needle thread is a second needle thread i which is disposed on the same face of the garment as the first-named needle thread and this second needle thread is formed into a series of loops which are parallelwwith the loops in the first needle thread and said loops extend through the arment, so that the loops in both the nee le threadsproject on the same'face of the garment. These loops are so disposed as toextend, along opposite sides of th edge of the collaret strip, which is opposed to the inturned edge of the .collaret strip, referred to, and said needle loops are joined either by a thread or a tape, which serves to lock the needle thread loops, and which also serves to cover the edge of the collaret strip lying between the rows of needle thread loops.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have shown my improved concealed stitched collaret as applied to a garment, indicated at G, having a neck portion N. The collaret strip is indicated at S.
Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, which shows one form of the invention, the collaret strip S is provided with an inturned edge 1, on one face of the garment. Lying along this inturned edge is a needle thread 2, which is formed into a series of loops 33. Said needle loops extend through the inturned edge 1 of the collaret strip, through the body garment G, and through the face of the collaret strip. 4, which is located atthe other face of the garment. Said needle thread lies between this inturned edge 1 and the face of the collaret strip adjacent the same, and will, therefore, be completely concealed from view by the collaret strip on one face of the body garment. Adjacent the needle thread 2 is a second needlethread 5, which is formed into a series of loops 6,
which eXtend through the garment G. This needle thread is disposed on the same face of the garment as theneedle. The needle thread loops 3 and 6 are arranged in parallel rows and these rows are disposed on opposite sides of the edge 7 of the collaret strip. Said needle thread loops are joined, as shown in this form of the invent-ion, by a looper thread which is indicated at 8, and said looper thread performs the double function of anchoring the needle thread loops and covering the edge 7 of th collaret strip, which is between the needle thread loops.
From the above, it will be apparent that I have provided a concealed stitched collaret strip, wherein one of the needle threads is entirely concealed at one face of the collaret strip and no needle threads pass through or lie upon this face of the collaret strip. Also, the other edge of the collaret strip is covered and concealed by the looper thread which joins and locks the needle thread loops.
In Figure 4 of the drawings, I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention in that the edge of the collaret strip on the opposite side of the fabric from the inturned edge 1 is also inturned, as indicated at 9. Otherwise, the form of the invention is ex actly similar to that. shown in Figures 2 and 3 and all the useful functions described aboveare present.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, I have shown a further'slightly modified form'of the invention disclosed in Figures 2 and 3, in that a tape 10 is stitched by the needle'thread loops, which tape serves to cover the edge? of the collaret strip. In this form of the invention, the needle loops may be locked by independent threads forming two independent parallel rows of stitching, or may be connected by a single looper thread. if desired.
In Figure 6 of the drawings, I have shown a further slightly modified form of the invention, .in that the'face 11 of the collaret strip S extends a greater distance over the body. garment G and the inturned edge 1 is of sufiicient eXtent,:so that both the needle threads 2 and 5 will lie between said inturned edge ofthe collaret strip and the face portion of said collaret strip, so that both ofthe needle threads are concealed by the collaret strip. The collaret strip is formed and the needle thread loops are anchored and joined as described in detail in connection with the form of invention shown in Figure 4:.
From the above, it will be apparent that I have provided a concealed stitched collaret having a body portion which is stitched to the garment, and no needle threads appear on one face of the collaret strip, while the edge of the collaret at the other face of the garment is completely covered.
It may be briefly stated that my concealed stitchedcollaret is preferably formed on a sewing machine wherein a collaret folder is provided which guides the edge of the strip which is to be turned under along the path of the needle and deflects the same at an angle to the path of the needle at the stitching point, so that the needle lying between the inturned part and the adjacent face of the collaret strip will pass through the inturned portion and form the needle loops in the manner above described. In my co-pending application, filed of even date herewith, I have shown, described and claimed a machine of this type, which contains broadly devices for accomplishing this result.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An undergarment comprising abody portion having a neck opening, a collaret strip. folded about the edge portion of the garment at the neck opening thereof and forming inner and outer face portions, the edge portion of the outer face portion being turned under, a needle thread lying between the turned under edge portion and the outer face portion and formed into loops extending through said turned under edge portion, said body portion of the garment and said inner face portion, a second needle thread formed into loops disposed in parallel relation with the first-mentioned needle thread loops and extending through the body portion of the garment, the loops of both threads forming spaced rows of needle thread loops, the edge of the inner face portion of the collaret strip being disposed between said rows of needle thread loops, and means connecting the loops of both rows of needle thread loops and covering the edge of the inner face portion of the collaret strip.
2. An undergarment comprising a body portion having a neck opening, a collaret strip folded aboutthe edge portion of the garment at the neck opening thereof and forming inner and outer face portions, the edge portion of the outer face portion being turned under, a needle thread lying between the turned under edge, portion and the outer face portion and formed into loops extending through said turned under edge portion, said body portion of the garment and said inner face portion, a second needle thread formed into loops disposed in parallel relation with the first mentioned needle thread loops and extending through the body portion of the garment, the loops of both threads forming spaced rows of needle thread loops, the edge of the inner face portion of the collaret strip being disposed between said rows of needle thread loops, and a looper thread formed into loops concatenated with the loops of both rows of needle thread loops and covering the edge of the inner face portion of the eollaret strip.
3. An undergarment comprising a body portion having a neck opening, a collaret a strip folded about the edge portion of the garment at the neck opening thereof and forming inner and outer face portions, the edge portion of the outer face portion being turned under, two spaced needle threads lying between the turned under edge portion and the outer face portion and respectively formed into spaced rows of needle thread loops extending through said turned under edge portion, and said body portion of the garment, the edge of the inner face portion of the collaret strip being disposed between said rows of needle thread loops, and means connecting the loops of said rows of needle thread loops and covering the edge of the inner face portion of the collaret strip.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
