COMBINATION DRAWBOLTiAND LOCK FOR TRUNKS.
Application filed September 17, 1921. Serial No. 501,225.
To @Z510/tom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, PATRICK J. GoRMAN and ANTI-ioni' J. PALUMBO, citizens of the United States, residing at'Bloomeld, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Drawbolts and Locks for Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination draw bolts and locks for trunks.
kThe principal object is to provide a device of this nature which may serve the triple purpose of a trunk dowel, a draw bolt and means for sealing or locking the trunk when closed.
Ano-ther object is to produce a device of this kind in which the trunk engaging p0rtions may be ush with eachother so as not to spring the cover away from the body as in similar devices heretofore manufactured.
Another object is to pro-vide a device of this nature which shall be simple of constructiomcheap to manufacture, and highly eiiicient for the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, which will be more apparent as the Specification proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of whichare hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved draw bolt and lock in place on a n trunk.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the device. Like characters of reference refer to like Y parts in all views.
Y Referring to the drawing in detail, 10
represents a plate which is secured to the cover of a ward-robe trunk and which is extruded at 11 so as to offset the dowel, the
thickness of the plate 10. The dowel is shown at 12 andis constructed with a hook portion 13V for receiving the tightening bail hereinafter described. The dowel 12 includes the usual tongue 14: to co-act with the receiving portion now to be described. Y
A plate 15 is secured to the bodyof the trunk in any suitable manner and is provided with a housing 16 having an aperture 17 to receive the tongue 14C of the do-wel. Mounted pivotally in the opposite end of the housing 17 is a draw lever 18 having a finger piece 19 pierced by an aperture 20. Pivotally mounted in the cars of the member 18 is a draw link or bail 21. A spring 22 secured to member 15 presses against the inner end of member 1S to hold the same in either its locking or unlocking position.
A U-shaped tongue23 is struck up from the member 15 at its lower portion and in line with the aperture 20 so as to protrude tlierethrough when member 18 is moved to closed position, and tongue 23 may be locked when insertedy in aperture 2O by a pad-lock 2%, official sealing device, or other securing or sealing instrumentality.
In operation, it is obvious that the tongue 141 will be drawn into the aperture 17 by placing the bail 21V in the hook 13 and then forcing down on the finger piece until the device is in locked position. The offset of the portion 11 and tongue 14 makes the two portions of the trunk come flush together and not unevenly which is a very desirable feature. It will also be seen that there is provided a convenient and efficient means for receiving the official seal `or other locking device.
While we have described what is deemed to be the most desirable embodiment of our invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of our invention, and wetherefore do not limit ourselves to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anytl'iing less than the whole of yeiner.
our invention limited only by the appended claim.
l."Vhat is claimed as new is ii trunl'v fastener comprising super-posed plates, a dowel carried by the upper plate and provided with a depending tongue and a hook portion, a housing carried by the lower plate, a lever'pivoted upon the housing and provided with a bail adapted t0 coact with the hook of the dowel to draw the plates together', the housing co-acting withthe tongue to receive the V'latter when Vthe plates are drawn together, a U-shaped tongue pressed from the lower plate beneath the housing and disposed in a fixed vertical plane With the tongue of Said doWel7 and a finger piece Carried by the lever below the housing and provided with a vertical slot to permit the U-shaped tongue Aof said lower 5 plate to pass therethrough and protrude therefrom when the lever is closed,` the doWel tongue Co-aoting with the housing to In testimony whereof We have affixed our signatures.
PATRICK J. GORMAN. ANTHONY J. PALUMBO.
