This invention relates to improvements 1in gauges adapted foruse as either water, Aoil or other liquid gauges and lwhich may be used in connection with boilers, lubricat'ors or 4containers of like character. r
An object of the invention is the provision of a gauge which includes the kusual glass sight tube', `by means of which the amount of water in a boiler or other container may be determined, the invention residing in novel means for automatically cutting off the flow of water in the event of the sight glass breaking.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for confining the broken glass and preventing the same from flying outward possibly preventing an injury to persons close by, the confining means however not interfering with the proper view of the sight glass.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appendedclaim.

Figure 4 is an enlarged section through one end of the gauge with the valve seated.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 denotes a frame, which includes parallel side bars 11 which are connected at their ends by transverse bars 12, while projecting from each of the bars 12 is a sleeve 13.
The sleeve 13 communicates with a restricted opening 14, which is formed in the bar 12 at the bottom or inner end and centrally of the sleeve 13. Positioned in each of the openings 14 is one end of a glass sight tube 15, each end being surrounded by I extension 21, which-extends within the opening `14 and/is further provided Iwith `a reduced extremity 22, which extends Within the sight glass 15. By rthis means, the yvalve normally engages the end of the glass 15, a shoulder being provided between the extension 21 and the reduced extremity 22 which receives the end of the glass and acts to limit the movement of the valve in a direction toward the glass. The juncture of the opening 14 and the valve chamber 19, provides a shoulder 23, while a corresponding shoulder 24 is formed on the valve body, a fiber washer 25 being secured to the last mentioned shoulder.
Communicating with the interior of each of the sleeves 13 is a pipe connection 26 so as to provide communication with the interior of the sight glass 15. For this purpose, the interior of the sleeve 13 is formed with a passage 27, which extends beyond each end of the body of the valve, while the latter is provided with a transverse passage 28, which communicates with a longitudinal passage 29, so that water or other liquids passing through the pipe 26 will enter the sleeve 13 and through the passage 27, will enter the valve chamber 19 and pass through the passages 28 and 29 into the sight glass tube 15, this structure being duplicated at each end of the frame.
The valve 20 is urged inwardly by means of a coil spring 30, one end of which bears against the valve 20 and the opposite end against the plug 31, which is threadedly secured within the outer end of each of the sleeves. The lower plug is provided with a central passage 32, which has threadedly Secured in its lower end a pet-cock 33.
Positioned upon opposite faces of the frame 10, is a guide frame or holder 34, the latter being opened at its top for the insertion of a transparent plate 35, which may be of isinglass or other suitable material which will prevent the particles of the sight tube 15 from flying about in the event of the tube breaking. v i,
In the operation of the invention should the sight tube 15 become broken from any cause, the springs will immediately force the valve 20 upon the shoulders 23 Which provides seats for the valve, the tube however, While in Working condition acting to hold the valve from these seats so as to permit of the passage of liquid.
The invention -is susceptible in its various changes in its forni, proportions, and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly tall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention What is claimed is:
A device of tlie class described comprising a frame provided with restricted openings in tlie opposite ends thereof, a glass siglit tube engaging said openings, sleeves projecting outwardly from the opposite ends of said frame and provided with longitudinal passages, circular extensions projecting in- Wardly from the opposite ends of said trame and surrounding said tube, packing surrounding said tube in and being arranged in the recess, caps removably secured to said extensions and engaging said packing, means for supplying a liquid to one of said sleeves, means for yconveying the liquid from the other sleeve, plugs removably secured to the outer ends of said sleeves, coil springs located in said sleeves and engaging said plugs, valves engaging the springs in saifd sleeves and normally arranged between the ends of the longitudinal passages therein, reduced extensions formed on said valves and engaging said sight tube and being provided With transverse and longitudinal passages ormed therein adapted to normally communicate With the longitudinal passages of the sleeve and means carried by the frame to prevent particles of glass flying in the event of the tube breaking.
