" known that Gum's R. llorrn rn of the United States residing at in the county of Sangamou Illinois, have invented certain se'hil improvements in Transs: and I do declare the folclear, and exactdcscrip l'cYllLlOIL such will enable the art to which it appere and us the stoic relercnrc o the acrmn nisaying drawings, ligiires of creme 7 and or new amt u merited ,reon, which form p; t of this S)9C1HQ:3-1OZ1.
My invention relates to lHE-IliQ-lJZUKlS of the type employed in automobile 1rans1nis-- ,anyingz d swing forming a part hereof and n Whl-Cl1- l h ure l is a perspcclire view of the dechahle ear of a transmission hand. rc-

one car making possible the easier and more expeditious placement and replacement of the transmission hand Without removal of other parts between which and the tensmission hand there would be interference if looth ears or" the hand were m'ma-nent ly attached to the band, as for instance in the transmission of a car of the Ford type. To facilitate the easy placing and removal of the detachable ear and to securely hold it in place in its attachment to the band, the i? is formed in its shank portion 5 with slots (5 enlarged at one end to receive headed studs 7 attached to the metal band 3 and also formed on its under face adjacent to the notched end of the ear with a slotor recess 8 having front and rear wallsas shown and designed to receive a shoulder or stud 9 projcctin from the face of the hand 3 so as to prevent the car from slipping lengthwise when in ocked attachment to the hand To place the car in position the heads of the studs 7 are inserted through the enlarged ends of the slots and the ear moved in the direction of the adjacent end of the hand so as to bring the studs 7 into the nar rower portions of the slots with their heads hearing against the outer face of the ear shank. As the ear is slid to the position mentioned the stud or projection 9 will snap into the recess 8 and thus the car will he locked to the metal hand and held against longitudinal movement. When the car is to be detached from the band the latter is pressed inward, away from the car, so as to withdraw the stud 9 from the recess 8 and the car then slid to bring: the heads of the studs 7 into the enlarged ends of the slots 6\ when the car can he lifted from the hand. If desired the end of the hand 3 may be bentupwardly to form a flange 10 to bear against the end of the car as shown in Figure 3 and thus atl'ord an additional bearing for the and of the ear and which also will serve as a hearing for a tool that may he used to press the metal band inward so as to disengage the stud 9 from its socket, or recess 8. i
The features specified constitute a simple and very ellicientconstruction perinitt-ii'ig the easy placement, removal and replace-' ment oi the car, and securely holds the ear in position without, danger of accidental displacement.
Having described mv invention and setforth its merits what claim is:
l. A transmission band provided with a removable ear formed with a slot having an enlarged portion and with a socket in its under face having front and rear Walls, and a band provided with a headed stud to lit in the slot of the ear and with a stud positioned to fit in the socket of the ear and hear against the t'ront and rear walls thereof to prevent longitudinal movement of the ear when in locked position.
2. A transmission hand provided with a removable ear formed with a slot having an enlarged portion and with a socket in its under face having front and rear walls, and a band provided with a headed stud to fit in the slot, of the ear and a stud positioned to fit in the socket of the ear and bear against the front, and rear walls thereof to prevent lon itudinal movement and with an upturned ange to bear-against the end of the ear.
In testimon whereof I afiix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
