Description

15 1924. 7 Jan E. n. KASER HANDLE Filed 'sent. 14. 1922 Patented Jan. 15, 1924.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
EVERETT DEE KASER,'OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR T0 DURABILT STEEL LOCKER (30., OF AURORA, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HANDLE.
Application filed September 14, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT DEE KAs-ER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Aurora,- county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a handle having an improved form and arrangement of fin er grip; to provide an improved manner of attaching the grip to the handle plate; to provide a metal handle which is simple and inexpensive in construction and neat and ornamental in appearance; and to provide a handle of the above description particularly adapted for use in sheet metal locker constructions.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a handle embodying this invention and showing part of a locking bar to which the handle is secured.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the handle.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse section of the handle as it appears before the sheet metal strip is curled to form the finger grip.
Fi 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4, showing the finger grip as it appears after it is curled.
A handle embodying this invention includes a blank or late, which forms the body part, and a strip of sheet metal which is die-shaped and sprung to conform to and embrace the inner edge of the blank so as to frictionally engage the plate and be secured thereto by its own resiliency.
In the specific embodiment herein illustrated, the handle comprises a fiat metal C-shaped blank 1, and a sheet'metal finger grip 2, extending along the inner edge thereof and disposed in a plane transverse to that of the blank.
A handle of this character may be used for various purposes, but in the form shown, it is designed for use on a steel locker, wherefore the blank 1 is provided with lugs 3 adapted to extend through vertical slots in the door of a locker for attachment to the movable locking bar illustrated at 4.
Serial No. 588,180.
The blank 1 may be a casting or a metal stamping.
The finger grip 2 comprises'a sheet metal strip of sufficient length to fit within the inner edge of the C-shaped blank 1. The ends of the strip are bent to conform to the contour of the blank 1 and are sprung so as to frictionally grip the inner edge of the blank. The side edges of the strip 2 are curled inwardly upon themselves by means of a curling die to form substantially circular heads 5, which coact with the opposite faces of the plate for securing the strip against displacement.
After the strip 2 has been sprung into position within the inner edge of the blank and the side edges thereof curled to coact with the opposite faces of the blank, the resiliency of the sheet metal causes the strip to firmly grip the plate, and the heads 5 secure the strip against lateral movement, so that the finger grip and blank are firmly secured together without additional fastening means.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that some of the details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims I claim:
1. A handle comprising a substantially flat plate having one edge out to C-shape, and a sheet metal strip having its medial longitudinal portion extending along said; one edge and having its lon itudinal mar ins curled inwardly upon t emselves and caring against the opposite faces of said plate.
2. A handle comprising a substantially fiat plate having one edge out to C-shape with the ends of said one edge concave, and a sheet metal strip having its medial longitudinal portion extending along said one edge and conforming substantially to the contour of said one edge, said strip having its longitudinal margins curled inwardly upon themselves and bearing against the 0pposite faces of said plate.
3. A handle comprising a substantially C-shaped fiat metal plate, and a sheet metal strip extending along the inner edge thereof to form a finier grip arranged in a plane transverse to t at of said plate, the side edges of said strip being curled inwardly upon filmmBe'lveB toiffirm suhstauitidllyci w cular beads contacting with opposite sides of said plate, the ends of said strip being bent te' con ferm teWhe-Oentcaur of Wie-ends' of said plate and being sprung so as to frictionally grip said inner edge for securing said strip to said plate by its own resiliency. 10 giggled ali' Kin-eta tli'iS Htli dhg 'of $ept.,
