A. J. COX
' CLOSURE FASTENER Fiied Jan. 5. 1922 Patented Jan. 15, 1924.
ALBERT 'J. COX, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
CLOSURE FASTENER.
Application filed January 5, 1922. Serial No. 527,122.
To all whom z' t-ma-g concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The closure which is the subject matter of the present application for patent has been designed more particularly for use in connection with oil stills, retorts, tanks and other receptacles the contents of which areunder a high pressure, and the object of the invention is to provide a closure which will successfully withstand such pressure, and
also to provide a leak-proof joint between the closure and its seat.
The objects stated are attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the closure, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fragment ofthe tank or other receptacle having an opening 6 to which is applied the closure which is the subject matter of the present application for patent. The opening is fitted with a dome or bonnet 7 which is cylindrical and is riveted or otherwise fastened to the wall of the tank so as to surround the opening 6 and to project therefrom.
The outer end of the dome 7 has an outstanding annular flange 8 and an internal annular rabbet 9 forming a seat for a cover 10, the latter having a reduced inner portion to enter the seat formed by the rabbet. In order to produce a leak-proof joint, a gasket ring 11 is mounted in the rabbet, against which ring the cover is tightly clamped. The gasket ring is safe from being blown out as it seats. in the rabbet and is surrounded by the side wall thereof, and is also clamped between the bottom wall of the rabbet and the under side of that portion of the cover which seats in the rabbet.
til
The means for fasteningthe cover or closure 10 comprise a series of arched clamping bars 12 mounted 011 bolts 13 carrying nuts 14: for forcing said bars against the outside of the cover. The bolts 13 pass through radial slots 15 in the flange 8 and recesses 16 in the edge of the cover, the heads'17 of the bolts being beneath said flange. The clamping bars 12 are slidably mounted on the bolts 13 between the nuts 14 and the outside of the cover 10, and hence by screwing said nuts inwardly, the ends of the clamping bars are jammed against the cover to hold the same securely seated.
The external diameter of the flanged end of the dome 7 is somewhat greater than the diameter of the cover 10, and the slots 15 in the flange 8 terminate at their outer ends beyond the edge of. the cover. This is for the purpose of facilitating the removal of the cover. To permit removal of the cover, it is necessary sufficiently to leave the clamping bars 12 and the bolts 13 loose, after which the bolts can be moved outwardly in a radial direction along the slots 15 until the clamping bars are beyond the edge of the cover and clear of the same. The cover is now freed and read for removal. The slots 15 terminate short of the edge of the flange 8.
In view of the large number of clamping bars 12 employed, and the fact that they engage the cover in two places, the cover is held tight, and it will successfully withstand any pressure in the receptacle 5.
Figure 2 of the drawing shows: one of the bolts 13 and the parts carried thereby swung outwardly of the edge of the cover 10 for facilitating removal of the latter as hereinbefore described.
I claim- 1. The combination with an element having an opening and an outstanding annular flange at the outer end of the opening; of a cover on said flanged end, said cover having edge recesses and the flange having radial slots terminating at their outer ends beyond the edge of the cover and short of the edge of the flange, bolts passing through said recesses and slots, nuts carried by the bolts, and arched clamping bars slidably only to back the nuts 14 radial slots terminating at their outer ends beyond the edge of the cover and short of the edge of the flange, bolts passing through said recesses and slots, and means associated,
with the bolts and engageable with the cover for 'holdingthesame closed.
ln-testimony whereofI' a'fiix my signature.
ALBERT J. COX.
