DETACHABLE BROOK HANDLE Application led June 6,
To all whom z'f may foneern.'
Be it known that I. AMos DEAN BENNErr, a citizen of the United States. residing at Independence, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Broom Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention lelates to coupling devices adapted to detachably unite the confronting ends of two ortions of a rod or handle. for instance. a divided broom handle or the like, to enable the same handle portion to be quickly coupled to a plurality of broom or brush heads or the like` or to enable a single handle to be employed repeatedly upon a plurality of worn or impaired broom or brush heads.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the inventionz- Figure 1 is an elevation of a conventional broom with the improvement applied, the broom head being partly in section,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the improved device,
Fig. 3 represents the two major portions of the improved device separated and in longitudinal section,
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the double cylindrical member of the im roved device.
The improved device inclu es a two part cylindrical member comprising an outer member 10 and an inner member 11 in spaced relation and coupled at one end by an annular member 12. he outer cylindrical member 10 is not threaded, but the inner cylindrical member is threaded both externally and internally as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Preferably the inner member 11 is formed of relatively thin metal and the threads formed by spinning or pressing in a well known manner, and the annular member internally threaded to enga e the adjacent terminal thread of the mem er 11 and the parts soldered, brazed, electrically welded or otherwise united.
Fitting in the space between the cylindrical portions 10 and 11, is one part of a rod or stock, for instance the stock portion 13 of a broom head, and which the broom straw portion, indicated at 14, encloses as 1922. Serial N0. 566,334.
shown in F ig. 1. The inem-ber 13 is not threaded externally and closely fits the un threaded interior of the portion 10, and is provided with an internally threaded cavity to engage the external threads of the portion 11. as shown in Fig. 2.
By this means the stock portion 13 is firmly united to the two part cylindrical portion, and may be held from retrograde movement by tacks or screws, indicated at 16.
The improved device likewise includes a socket portion 17 to receive one end of a rod or handle, for instance the handle portion 18 of a broom, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and secured by tacks or screws 19.
When the parts are united, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and thus producing a continuous uniform exterior face to the portions 10 and 17, while the handle portion 18 is preferably recessed where it enters the socket 17 the outer faces of the four parts, 10, 13, 17 and 18 being uniform and without projections, as shown.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be manufactured of any suitable material and in any required size and adapted to any form of rod or handle member-formed of divided portions.
The referred embodiment of the invention is disc osed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction Without departing from the principle ofthe invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A coupling device of the class described including an outer cylindrical member and an inner cylindrical member in spaced relation, an annular member connected respectively to said outer and inner cylindrical member at one end, said inner cylindrical member being externally and internally threaded, a socket adapted to receive one end of a handle and having a reduced externally threaded portion to engage the internal threads of the inner cylindrical member and with a lateral shoulder at the junction of the socket and the reduced threaded portion thereof bearing on the annular connecting member of the inner and-onter cylindrical members, and a stock member adapted toengage in the outer cylindrical member and having an internally threaded cavity to engage the external threads of the inner cylindrical member.
2. A coupling device including a receiving member formed of an outer cylindrical portion an inner cylindrical portion internally and externally threaded and spaced from the outer cylindrical portion and an annular portion connecting the outer and inner cylindrical receiving portions at one end, a stock engaging Within the outer vcylindrical receiving portion and having an internally threaded cavity` to engage the internal threads of the inner cy indrical receiving portion, an entering member including an` AMos DEAN BENNETT.
