Be it'lmown that I, Looms M. WVoon a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York borough of Manhattan, in the county and State-.-of New York, have invented a-ne'w and Improved Valve SpringLifter, of which the following is a fulh-clear, and exact description.

The bar 10 is provided with one or a number of vertically disposed the outer-end of the lag screw or bolt C "-may be removed for the purpose of removing the cover plate, and the'bar 1O placed in position with the bolt C extending through the guide slot 19. The nut 12 is then screwed on to the end. of the bolt 0, the forks 13 extending under the valve spring seat G and embracing the valve stem E. The leaf springs 17 are engaged with the outer studs 16 of each leg and the prongs 20 of the lever are inserted into the chamber to cause the opposite extremities of the pins 21 to engage behind the valve lifter guide sleeves I. An. upward movement of the outer end of the lever 11 will effect the engagement of the prongs with the under side of the bar therebylifting thebar and compressing and lifting the valve springs H. It will be noted that the lifting bar 10 in this instance is provided with projecting portions which overlap or engage the front edges of the end walls M of the housing and hence the lifting bar by virtue of these end guide portions is guided thereby in a vertical plane,-thus causing the member 13 to be positively shifted in a vertical'plane. The guide slot 19 centers the lifting members 13 with relation to the valve springretainers G, and acts as agui de for restricting any material endwise movement of the bar 10 without,at the same time causing any pressure to be exerted'upon the bolt C. lVhen the bar or plate 10 has been lifted a sufficient distance to bring the notched or cut-away lower extremities of the legs in registration with the upper edge of the lower wall of the valve spring chamber B, the springs 17 will swing the legs or looking members 14 inwardly into engagement with said edge, thereby retaining the springs H under compression. The lifting lever 11. may then be removed and the operator may readily re-' move the retaining pins F and the valves D; 'After the grinding operation the valves are reinserted and the pins F replaced. The lever 11 is again placed in position and the springs 17 are then engaged with the inner studsj whereby an initial lift of the lever will cause said springs to swing the legs 14 outwardly,thereby unlocking the lifting bar. The expansion of the valve springs will lower the lifting bar and reseat the valve spring seats on the retaining pins F.
' It will be observed that as the prongs of the liftinglever 11 engage the under side. of the bar 10 and elevate the same, the latter slides over the upper edges of the prongs. 1
Thus, the action of elevating the bar 10 through the lever 11 is a cam action, and the upper edges or surfaces of pron 's or proections 20 act as cam surfaces. s a result of this cam action the power necessary to compress the springs is considerably reduced.
I claim r I 1. A valve spring lifter comprising a bar adapted to engage the under sides of a plurality of valve spring seats, means for lifting said bar and compressing the sprin and resilient locking means carried by said bar for retaining the same in lifted position and the springs under compression.
2. A valve spring-lifter comprising a lift- 1 ing bar adapted to be detachably associated with a motor, means engageable with the motor and the under side of said bar for ing a pair of pivoted supportinglegs, and
means for swinging the same.
4. A valve spring lifter comprising a lifting bar adapted to be detachably associated with a motor, a plurality of valve spring seat engaging members project-ing therefrom, looking members pivoted to said bar, res1l1ent means engaging said. members for swinging the same, and means for lifting the bar tocompress the valve springs.
5. In a motor having a valve spring chamber and a cover pl'ateretaining bolt,
means for lifting and retaining the valve springs under compression and comprising a bar having a guide slot embracing said retaining bolt, means carried by said bar and'adapted to engage the. under sides of a plurality of valve spring seats, means for elevating said bar and automatic means carried'by the bar for supporting and re tainingthe bar in elevated position. 6. A valve spring lifter adapted to b used with a motor having a valve spring housing and comprising a. lifting member provided at opposite ends thereof with guide portions adapted to overlap the housing, when the lifting member is located in opera tive position, and means engageablewith the motor and underside of said member "tion of a lifting bar having means for opcrating against a plurality of valve springs, lever means for elevating said bar, and means carried by said bar independently of said last means for maintaining the same in elevated position. i
9. In a valve spring lifter the combination of a lifting member having means extending beneath three or more valve springs for operating thereagainst, means engageable with the motor and said member for lifting the same, and means carried by said member for guiding the same against displacement relatively to the valvev springs during operation. 7
10. A valve spring lifter for a motor having a valve spring housing, a plurality of valves and springs and a housing stud or bolt and com risin means for liftin said springs under tension, said means comprising a member having a guide slot adapted to embrace said bolt.
11. A valve spring lifter for a motor having a valve spring housing, a plurality of valves and springs and a housing stud or bolt, and comprising means for lifting said springs under tension, said means compris ing a member having a guide slot adapted to embrace said bolt, and said member engaging said housing in front of the valves and guided thereby.
12. A valve spring lifter for a motor having a valve spring housing, a plurality of valves and springs and a housing stud or bolt, and comprising means for lifting said springs under tension, said means comprising a member having a guide slot adapted to embrace said bolt, and cam means for operating said member.
13. In a valve spring lifter, a shiftable lifting member-having means for operating against three or more valve springs, means for shifting the same to simultaneously com springs, and shiftable self-locking means extending beneath'said member for maintaining the same in shifted'position. 7
15. In a valve spring lifter the combination of a shiftable lifting member for a plurality of valve springs, said member in operative position having a' vertically ex- 7 tending guide slot and members.
16. In a valve spring lifter'the combination of a vertically shiftable lifting member for a plurality of valve springs, said member having a vertical guide slot and spring controlled locking supports. 1 V
17 In a valve spring lifter the combination of a member having means projecting therefrom for operating against a plurality of valve springs, and means for lifting said depending locking member, said member having a pair of guide means cooperating with the engine, one for guiding the member against transverse movement and the other for guiding the member against endwise movement.
