Be it known tl at l, SrMoi.' Z. GinsoN, a citizen of the TJnited States, and a resident of Seattle, county of King, and Sta-tel of ldfashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hair Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hair clippers, and more particularly to clippers of that character that are to be mechanically driven, such as by means of a flexible shaft that may extend to the clippers from an electric motor or other mechanical driving mechanism.
It is an object of this inv-ention to improve upon clippers of that character as heretofore constructed by the provision of certain gearing and operating mechanism whereby there is less frictional heat generated, vibrating is reduced and a more eflicient and longer wearing device is produced.
@ther objects of the invention reside in the details of construction of the various parts and in their combination and mode of operation.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accom panying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of clippers constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, with the cover plates removed to show the driving gearing.
Figure 3 is a transverse, sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a transverse, sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clippers.
Referring more in detail to the drawings- 1 designates the housing of the device tal en as a whole. This consists, preferably of a metal plate, bent in the form of a handle` as is best shown in Figures 1 and 2, and which has upwardly turned opposite side ianges 2 and 3 and an end wall 4, over which is fitted a cover plate 5 which is held in place by means of screws extended therethrough at its ends.
Fixed to the lower end of the housing is the base cutter shoe 6 having cutting teeth 7 along its forward edge. A movable cutter plate 8 is slidably mounted upon the base shoe and is held in position thereon by means of lugs 9 on its under side which are slidable within grooves l0 transversely of the base shoe, and by means of the forward edge of a cap, or coverv 11, which is fitted over the cutter and lower end of the housing.
The means provided for holding these parts assembled, comprises two screws 12 and 13 that are extended upwardly through the base shoe, at opposite sides adjacent its back edge, through the lower forward edge of the housing and are fixed at their ends in a cross bar 14. A bolt 15 is extended upwardly through this bar at its center and through an aperture in the rearward edge of the cap, and a nut 16 is tightened on the bolt against the cap to hold the parts securely together.
The means for operating the movable cutter blade consists of mechanism contained within the hollow handle portion of the device. There is a driving shaft 17 entering the casing at its outer end. It is intended that this shaft be connected, in any suitable manner, to an electrically driven, or mechanically driven flexible shaft. The inner end of this shaft 17 is supported Within a transverse wallV 18 about midway of the housing, and adjacent this end a worm gear 19 is iixed thereon which operates in mesh with and drives a gear wheel`2() mounted on a stud 21 that is fixed yinthe base of the housing. .Formed on the upper face of the gear 20, is a bevel gear 22` which drives a bevel gear 23 on the end of a shaft 24 that extends through the wall 18 and is rotatably fixed in two spaced apart posts 25 and 26 .formed on, or fixed to, the base of the hous lng. said posts, is an eccentric 27 about which one end of a pitman, or connecting rod 28 is mounted; the other end of the rod being fixed pivotally to a cross head 29 that is slidable along two parallel rods 30 and 31 which are fixed at their opposite ends in the side wall 2 and posts 25 and 26.
To the cross head' 29 is pivotally connect# ed one end of a link 32 whichhas its other end likewise attached to the upper end of a blade oscillating lever 33. This lever is pivotally mounted at about its longitudinal centerl on a screw which extends through Fixed on this shaft 24, between theV the lower end of the cover plate and into a boss 35 in the base plate, and at its forward end the lever has a rounded head 3G that is operatively fitted within a slot 37 in the cutter 8. Assuming that the parts are so constructcd and assembled, it is apparentl that when the shaft 17 is driven, the shaft 24k Will like- Wise be driven through the connectinggears 19, 2O 22 and 23, and this causes rotation of the cam 2.7 and reciprocal movement of the cross head 29 on bars 30 and 3l accordingly. This effects oscillationot the lever 33 through the connection ot the link 82 and a resultant operation of the cutter blade 8.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
n a hair clipping` device of the class described, a transmission mechanism comprising a lever nivotally mounted at a point betvveen its ends and adapted to be operativelj,7 connected at its outer end to actuate a cutter blade, a driving shaft having' an eccentric journal, a pair of guide rods, a crosshead slidable on said rods, a. Vlink connecting the cross-head with the inner end of the blade actuating lever, a pitinan having one end mounted on the eccentric and connected at its other end with the4 cross-head.
