SIGNORS T LANDEB'S, PORATIDN OF CONNECTICUT.
PATFE NT ALONZO A. WARNER, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, AS- FBIARY & CLARK, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A COB- GUARD.
Application filed February 14, 1921. Serial No. 444,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. SMITH and ALoNzo A. WARNER, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Britain,
county of Hartford, State of Connecticut,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Guard, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to guards such, for
)0 instance, as are applied to reflectors of electric heaters, and has as its object to provide a device of this sort having various features of novelty and advantage and which is particularly characterized by its simplicity and cheapness in construction and its pleasing appearance.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein is illustrated one embodiment which the present invention may take:
Fig 1. is a front view of a guard,
Fig. 2 is a partial view thereof in central section, and
Fig. 3 is an edge View, partly in section, of the members to which the guard wires are secured.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the guard has a plurality of similarly shaped wire petals or loops a secured to and radiating from a center piece 5, and provided at their outer free ends with hooks 0 adapted to catch over the ed e of the reflector d.
ach of the petals is formed of a single piece of wire bent back upon itself to form a pair of arms 10 connected at their outer ends by a cross portion 11 from the center of which extends a double stranded tongue bent to form the hook c. The arms 10 preferably diverge towards their outer ends and the cross portion is curved or bowed, as
shown. The petals are curved longitudinally in a direction at right angles to the Width thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the guard is generally of convex form.
44! The free ends of the wires forming the petals may be secured at the central portion of the guard in any suitable manner. However, the securing means, shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, may
be employed to advantage for this purpose. From these figures, it will be seen that the center piece 1), preferably formed of sheetmetal, has a cylindrical sleeve portion 13. 14: is a ring adapted to fit over the sleeve 13 and having spaced openings 15 and a circumferential flange provided with notches 17 corresponding to the openings 15. The ends of the guard wires, which are bent u as at 18, extend through the notches 17 and into the openings 15. The ring is secured to the center piece by expanding the outer end of the sleeve as indicated at 19.
Preferably, the open end of the reflector to which the guard is applied is of slightly greater diameter than the distance between diametrically disposed hooks c of the guard. Thus, when the guard is applied to the reflector with the hooks c catching over the edge of the latter, the strains set up in the guard will hold it in place. If desired, the guard may be held against rotation on the reflector by projections on the latter. In the present instance, the edge of the reflector is shown as scalloped and the hooks catch in between these scallops. It is, of course, uderstood that the reflector is shown by way of illustration only as our improved guard may be applied to other types. 7
It is, of course, obvious that the invention is susceptible of various modifications and changes which are within the spirit of the invention without departing from the scope of the following claims, it being understood that the present disclosure of the invention is by way of illustration only and it is not to be taken as restrictive of our conception.
We claim:
1. A guard for heaters of the reflector type, comprising a center piece, and a plurality of petals radh ting from the center piece, each petal comprising a pair of diverging spring arms bent toward each other and connected together at their outer ends and bent thereat to provide a reinforced hook for engagement over the edge of a reflector, and means on the center piece engaging the inner ends of the stale to hold the same in opposition to t e hooks for yieldingly binding the latter by the springi- Wires passing through said notches with ness of said arms on the reflector. their bent up ends positioned in said open- 2. In a guard, a plurality of radiating ings, and a center piece provided with a. 10 guard wires each having its inner end bent sleeve passing through and having its outer 5 up, a ring having spaced openings and a cirn fl nged ver said ring.
cumferential flange rovided with notches CHARLES F. SMITH. corresponding to said openings, said guard ALONZO A. WARNER.
