IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l47,973,dated February 24, 1874; application filed February 4, 1874.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHANN PEYER, of VVahrin g, near Vienna, in the Empire of Austria, have invented a new and Improved Bolt-V Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereot', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the sam e, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,'forming part of iny'speciication, in which drawing- Figure l represents my lock .in section, as applied to a door or window. Fig. 2 is a sectional face view of the lock detached.
Similar letters indicate cor-responding parts.
This invention consists in the employment of a double crank, arranged on the lock-spindle, for operating bolt-slides, each ot' which is provided with a socket for the reception of bolt-pins, the bolts ot which are let into the stile of a folding door or window, and one of which carries a hook that projects from said stile, in such a manner that when my lock is applied to one of the two sashes of a French window it serves, through the bolts, to brace this sash, and, through the hook, to retain or lock therewith the second one, the latter'being mortised for the reception of the hook. By rotating the crank, a reciproca-ting motion is imparted to the bolt-slides, whereby the bolts are locked or unlocked, as desired.
In the drawing, which shows my invention in a locked posit-ion, theV letters A A designate the stiles of two sashcs of a French window, for which my invention is particularly intended, each of which sashes is hinged, and is made to close on the other, as shown. B is the case of my lock, which is mortised in the surface of the outer rail of the lockingstile. The handle I) carries a stem or spindle, E, extending into the lock, on which spindle is mounted a double crank, F, composed of three disks, provided with eccentric pins a a, placed on opposite surfaces of the middle disk, and opposite each other on the edges thereof, forming a connection between the middle and the two outer disks. Each of the crank-pins a a moves in slots b, Fig. 2, formed in one end of plates or slides G, the other end of which slides carry socket-pieces c c,
which receive the pins cl d of bolts H H. These pins d d of the bolts work in slots c e of the lock-case, and the bolts are lot into channels I I, extending above and below the lock in the locking-stile, which channels are provided with a lining of metal to reduce friction of the bolts, and to preserve the wood. One of the bolts is provided with a hook, J, which projects therefrom through the stile A, which is slotted at f, for the passage and working of the shank of the hook. A mortise, K, is formed in the stile next and opposite to the hook J, such mortise being concealed by a front plate, which is slotted for the admission of the hook. The bolts H H are retained in suitable sockets in the floor and ceiling, and the hook J catches behind the frontplate in the mortise.
In order to withdraw the bolts, the handle Dis turned through a halfcircle, when the position of the crank-pins is reversed, and, operating the bolt-slides, the bolts are drawn toward each other, the hook J being at the same timefraised or brought on a level with the slot in the mortise-plate, so that such hook is released, and is withdrawn, in opening the sashes, without obstruction.
It will be observed that my lock is made entirely independent of the bolts, and can be readily removed or taken out of the sashes to preserve it (the lock) from moisture or wet in washing the windows.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The double crank F, arranged on the lockspindle, for operating the boltslides G, each of which is provided with a socket for the reception of bolt-pins, the bolts H H of which are let into the stile A of a folding door or window, and one of which carries a hook, J, projecting from said stile, and operating substantially as herein described.
This specication signed by me this 25th day of November, 1873.
JOHANN PEYER.
