TEAvELiNe-FLAT eAEnINe ENGINE.
Application led May 10, 1923. Serial No. 638,069.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. ALBEECHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoonsOcket, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Traveling-Flat Carding Engines, 'of which `the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention is an improvement in the means of actuating the rotary clearerbrushes by which lint, etc., is removed from those portions of the backs of the traveling flats, at the ends of the Hats, which make contact with the guiding and supporting sheaves, and in some cases also fromthe links at the ends of the flats which join the flats together into an endless chain, and from the pivot screws connecting the links to the ends of the flats. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which latter,-
Fig. 1 shows in side elevation certain portions of a traveling Aflat carding engine, with a preferred embodiment of the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side View on a larger scale of the brushes of Fig. 1, the ratchet and pawl devices shown combined therewith, and portions of the brush-carrier and adjacent stripper-stand, the end brush being only partly shown.
Fig. 3 is a View, chiefly insection on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, of the parts'shown in said ligure.
Fig. 4 shows the pawl, pawl-carrier, and associated screws in disassembledrelation.
Having reference to the drawings,-v i.
The chain of traveling flats 1, Fig. 1, only a portion of which is represented, isshownV extended in usual manner- .around' andover sheaves 2, 3, (only two of which are shown) mounted as usual upon shafts 21, 31, supported by brackets or stands 4, 5, that are attached to the arch 7 in connection with the main cylinder, and project radially therefrom. At 15 is shown the usual stripper-blade or comb for removing fibrous material, etc., from the card-clothing of the flats as they pass around the sheave 2 on leaving the surface of the main cylinder, at 14 one of the arms of a stripper-blade carrier, and at 13 the supporting rockshaft of the said carrier, such rockshaft being journaled in a Vbearing provided in connection with bracket or standl 4 (herein termed also stripper-stand). The means for rocking'the rockshaft to vibrate the stripper-blade is not i shown; it may be in practice of any convenient character. v
AtlO is shown one of the brushes which are employed for clearing lint, etc., from those portions of the backs of the flats which make contact with the sheaves 2, 3, in passing around the latter, and 100 is one of the brushes employed for clearing lint from the links 9V joining the flats together into an endless chain,'and from the pivot screws 8 ,connecting the said links with the flat f ends. At 101 is theshaft to which the clearer-brushes 10 and 100are attached, and at 12 is one ofthe supporting arms, fixedly attached by clamping screw 120 to the rockt shaft 13 of the stripper-carrier and having lan ope`n-toppe :ll bear-ing `at 11 which receives the journal-portion' of the brushshaft 101. At 16 is a ratchet-wheel which is attached to the brush-shaft 101, and at 18 is a pawl which through engagement with the teeth of the lratchet-wheel 16 serves to rotate the brush-shaft and its clearerbrushes 10 and'100. f
rlhe invention consists essentiallyfin the combination with a clearer-brush for removing lint from the end-portions of the traveling flats of-thetraveling flatcarding engine, and a brush-support that is movable relatively. to the chain of traveling flats, of means actuated through the movement of the said brush-support to rotate the said brush. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the ,said means includes a pawl-carrier which is vibrated as a result of the movement of the brush-support. Such pawl-carrier 17 is lin this instance a lever with which the pawl 18 is connected by means of a pivot screw- 181,
the said lever having an open-bottom bearing 171 to receive and tittheA journal-portion of brush-shaft 101, so as thereby to mount the pawl-carrier concentrically with theclearer-brush and ratchet-wheel. The said pawl-carrying lever is engaged with an adjacent stationarylpart, which in this instance is for convenience constituted by a lateral extension of the stripper-stand 4 so that as the brush-support movesv in rocking as previously mentioned, the pawlcarrying around theA axis of the brush-shaft.
engagement of the paWl-carrying lever-iseffected in this instance by means of a screw 2O which is applied to and projects from the said lever so that its stem 201 occupies a slot 19 in the stripper-stand, this slot being ot sufficient length to accommodate-the movement ot the said screw longitudinally of the slot, which is incidentalto the rocking or vibrating movement ot the paWl-carrier, etc. For convenience in assembling and disassembling the parts, theL slot 19 is made open-ended, accidental disengagement of the stem 201 ol screw 2O being prevented by means of the 'flange orhead of al screw 21 that is applied to the end ot the eXtension ot' the shipper bracketin such relations that a portion ot thesaid ian'ge or head projects partway across the open end of the slot 19. T he flange or head 202 of the screw 2O prevents accidental disengagement of screw 2O from slot 19 as a result of lateral displacement. `The open-topped bearing 11 in supporting arm 12, the opeirbottomed bearing 171 in paWl-carrier 17, and the openended slot 19 in the lateral eXtensiono shipper bracket 4, providefor convenience and speed in assembling and disassembling the parts.
