. A. R. RAMIG HOLDER FOR MENUS AND BILLS 0F FARE i-"iled Aug. 21'. 1922 W/TNESS Fatented den. 1, I924.
ADO KPH R. RAMIG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HOLDER FOE MEIIUS AND BILLS OF FARE.
Application rues august. 21, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Anotrrr B RAMIG, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Chicago, in the county ofCook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Holder for Menus and Bills of Fare, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a specification.
This invention relates to holders comprising a frame in which menus, bills of fare and other like articles are placed to preserve the same and to render them convenient to handle and observe.
Among the objects of this invention is to obtain a frame in which a menu card or bill of fare, printed on card board, heavy paper or other like material, as well as when printed on ordinary print paper, can be readily placed and secured in position, and easily removed; and a frame which, when laid on a table in a closed condition, will remain closed, and which, when raised from said table will automatically tend to open, and sutliciently to render it easy for the user thereof to examine the menu, or other memorandum contained therein. A further object is to obtain a holder having a pleasing appearance, and easy to grasp and hold in the hand.
In the drawings referred to as illustrating a construction embodying the invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a holder.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the holder, in a closed position.
Fig. 3 is a rear plan view of a portion of the hinge of the holder, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4: is a section on line fof Fig. 3, viewed as indicated by arrows, to illustrate the manner in which the spring forming an element of the holder is mounted on the pintle of the holder to tend to open the holder.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, viewed as indicated by arrows.
Fig. 6 is the preferred pintle of a completed holder, removed from the holder, to better show its form.
A reference character applied to designate a given part indicates said'part throughout the several figures of the drawing wherever the same occurs.
A, A, represent the edge members of the left-hand side or leaf of the frame of the Serial No. 583,191.
u v o k holder, as vlewed in Fig. l, and B, B, reptions of the fourth side of a rectangle of the parts A and B, and through said pa-rts A, and B. The parts A and B, of the frame are of an angularly deflected U-shape in cross section and portions of the bent parts thereof are cut away, to form the interlocking parts E, F, of a hinge, and G represents a wire which extends through the interlocking parts to form the pintle of the hinge. g, 9, Fig. 6, represent loop bends in wire G, which are made after the wire is inserted in place through said interlocking parts E, F, the parts A, B, being further cut away to obtain spaces between interlocking members which permit the bending of the wire G into said loops 9, g. The parts A, B, are further cut away to obtain a space between interlocking parts in which a spring (H) is inserted, on the pintle G. The ends it, h, of spring H are extended to come in contact with the inner sides or faces of parts A, B, to put said spring under tension when the sides or leaves of the frame are folded together into substantially parallel planes; but said spring is not of sufficient size and strenght to separate said sides when the holder is laid in a horizontal position. When, however, the holder is raised from said horizontal postition by a person desiring to peruse a menu or other article contained therein, said spring assists in the opening of the holder.
I, Fig. 5, represents, in cross section, a menu provided with apertures through which loops 9, g, of pintle G, extends, to hold said menu in place in the holder. J reperesents what is termed, a special menu, which extends between said loops 9, g, and K represents an elastic band, preferably of rubber, which is stretched and placed over said loops g, holding both menus I and J, in place.
To place a menu or bill of fare in the holder the frame is opened, as in Fig. 1, and apertures which have been previously made therein are placed over the loops 9, g. The
elastic band, B is then engaged With the loops 9, g, to hold the menu or bill of fare on the loops.
I claim:
1. A holder consisting of covers hinged together, said holder comprising a spring member mounted on the pintle of the hinge, and each of said covers comprising a plurality of frame members U-shaped in cross section, one of said frame members extending around three sides of a rectangle and pertions of the remaining side, and the other of said frame members having interlocking parts arranged to permit apintle to pass therethrough and through said spring, in combination With a Wire arranged to form said pintle, said Wire looped between the ends thereof to form abutments in spaced relation adapted to extend through a menu in said holder.
2. A holder consisting of covers hinged together, said holder comprising a spring member mounted on the pintle of the hinge and arranged to tend to open the covers from a closed position,- and each of said covers comprising a plurality of frame members U-shaped in cross section, one thereof extending around three sides of a rectangle and portions of the remaining side, and having round corners thereto, and the other of said frame members having interlocking parts arranged to permit a pintle to pass therethrough and through said spring, in combination with a Wire arranged to form said pintle, and projections on said Wire adapted to extend through a menu contained in said holder.
ADOLPH RQ RAMIG.
