LATHING STRIP.
Application filed August 10, 1922. Serial No. 580,927.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED M. SPAYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van Wert, in the county of Van VVert and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lathing Strips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved lathing strip and one object of the invention is to provide a lathinp' strip in which there may be provided a backing strip of card board or other suitable material and laths extending transversely of the backing strip, ccrtain'of the laths having their ends terminating within the confines of the backing strip and serving to prevent bending or the strip and the other laths extending beyond one side of the backing strip for extending in overlapping relation to the backing strip oil a second lathing strip.
Another object of the invention is to provide'a lathing strip in which the laths which extend beyond the side edge of the backing strip will have their inner ends terminating adjacent the transverse center of the backing strip, the lathe being slightly shorter than the width of the backing strip so that when two of the lathing strips are put in place with the extended laths overlapping the adjacent strip, the end portionsof the laths of the two strips will not con tact.
Another object of the invention to so construct the lath strips that when the lath strips are put in place with the side edges of adjacent strips contactin the ends out the laths ill be out of contact and thus permit expansion and contraction.
Another object of the invention is to so construct these lathing strips that when put in place, the laths of adjacent strips which extend in overlapping relation will serve as bracing means, to prevent the laths having any movement which might tend to cause cracking o1 the plaster or stucco.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the laths used that when viewed in cross section, they w1ll be provided with head formin ortions and reduced neck 3 g forming portions, the neck forming portions en 'a 111 the baclnn strm and the b 2:) V b 1.
space between the laths being. thus formed into pockets having enlarged inner portions and reduced inlets between the laths, thus preventing the mortar or other plastic from having any movement after the laths shrink in drying.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a View in front elevation showing two strips of lathing strips in place.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a portion of a lathing strip and a fragment of a second in into operative relation to the first lathing strip.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary lon itudinal sectional View taken along the line 3-3 oi Fig. 1.
Figure & is a fragmentary sectional taken along the line 4l of Fig. l.
The lathing strips will be formed of a suitable width according to whether it is desired to have each strip bridge three of the joists or studdings 1 as shown in Fig. 1, or may be formed wider if it is desired to have the strips bridge a greater number of these studdings. The lathing strips may be of any desired length and when not in use will be rolled. l/Vhen it is in use, the strip will be cut the desired length so that it will reach from the top to the bottom of the space to be plastered or stuccoed. This lathing strip is provided with a backing strip 2 which may be formed of cardboard or any other suitable material. ing strip will be coated vith tar or any other suitable material shown at 3 and the laths l will be put in place as shown. These laths will in the pref rred form be arranged in groups which have been designated by the letters A and B. The laths of the group A extend across the backing strip from one side to the other but terminate in slight spaced relation to the side edges of the backing strip so that when the lathing strips are put in place against the studding, the ends of the laths 4 will terminate in spaced relation as shown clearly inFig. 3. Therefore, the laths may expand and contract without danger of having their ends contact and cause bulging. The laths of the group B are of the same length as the laths of the group A and these laths are put in place shown in Fig. 2 with their inner ends terminating adjacent the transverse center of the back- View position for moving This backplaster.
ing strip. These laths extend beyond the side of the backlng StI'lP so that when the strips are put in place and secured to the studding the extended end portions of the laths of the group B will extend in overlapping relation to the adjoining lathing strip between the laths of the groups A and terminate in slight spaced relation to the inner ends of the lathe of the group B of this lat-hing strip. By having the laths oi the adjoining strip extending in overlapping relation, the strip will be prevented from being twisted out of shape and further driven to cause the securing nails to he driven into the studding asshown in Fig. 3. When the latlnng is used for holding plaster or stucco, the plastic is forced in between the laths i and if a backing is not used, a great deal 01" the plaster or stucco has a tendency to fall down behind the lathing strips. The backing pr vents this and thus prevents-a great waste of plaster and stucco.
In order to provide a means for holding a body of plaster or stucco tightly in place after'drying, or in order to prevent the body of plaster or stucco. from becoming loose froiii the laths after the laths have shrunk incidental to the drying of the plaster or stucco, the inner portions of the side edges ot the laths t :are cut away to term in-- wardly facing shoulders. These shoulders are arranged in parallel relation 'to the I outer faces of the laths 4;, as shown in Fig.
l, so that as the laths shrink in the direction of their widta as an incident to the drying or tne plaster or stucco, these shoul ders will hold the hody of the plaster or stucco tightly and will prevent it fro becoming loose. The laths 4i are there'lore applicable not only to hacking s-tripsuch as the strip :2 shown in the drawings, but may also he nailed-directly to any flat surface to which plaster or stucco is to be applied. "When the laths are not to be secured. to a backing strip, such as the strip 1 shown in the drawings, but are to he applied to a flat surface, they may be applied directly to such surface, no means being necessary to space the lathe from the s irface in order to permit them to firmly hold the mass of plaster or stucco.
There has thus been-provided strips of lathing which can be very easily and quickly put in place and the securing nails for the laths readily driven into the proper portions .01 the laths for entering the-studdings. Y
I claim: I 1
1. A lathing strip comprising a backing strip and spaced laths carried by and all extending transversely of the backing strip, certain of said laths' extending beyond the backing strip at one side thereof and hav ing their inner ends tern'iinating intermediate the width of the backing strip, there- .by leaving portions of said backing strip unoccupied by laths, and the remaining laths'having their ends terminating within the confines ofthe backing strip.
2. A lathing strip comprising a backing sheet, groups of laths' all extending transversely of said backing sheet, the laths of certain of said groups extending beyond one side of said backing strip and having their .inner ends terminating intermediate the width of the 'baclning strip, thereby le-avingportions of said backing strip unoccupied by laths, and the laths of the other groups having their ends terminating in slight spaced relation to the side ed es oil? the backing strip. V
3. The structure oi claim 1 having the extended laths alternated be ween the laths terminating withinthe confines of the back- 7 ing strip. v r
In testin'iony whereof I have hereunto ate fixed my signature, v
