Be it known that 1, ROBERT C. HOAGLAND,
a citizen of the United States, residing at 1012 Ash St, Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo it and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Grease Gun, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates togrease guns, and more particularly grease guns designed for containing a journal box cooling medium.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a grease gun of this character which may be readily and easily carried on the body of the user, the plunger rod being of a construction to fall down out of the way, in a manner to prevent the material contained in the gun from becoming accidentally forced therefrom.
Another object of the invent-ion is to provide a gun having a removable nozzle which may be readily and easily removed, for filling purposes, and one wherein the material contained in the gun will be ejected laterally upon the operation of the plunger.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts: and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without d parting from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a grease gun constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the gun.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the supporting hook.
Figure 4: is an elevational view of an arm ring to be secured to the gun permitting the gun to be carried on the arm of the user.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the barrel of the gun, which has laterally extending pins 6 secured to the outer surface thereof and disposed adjacent to the discharge end of the barrel.
Removably secured to the barrel 5 is a nozzle 7 which is disposed at an angle with respect to its supporting collar 8, which is designed to fit over the discharge end of the barrel 5 as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing. A bayonet slot indicated at 9 is formed on opposite sides of the collar 8 and designed to accommodate the pins 6, so that the nozzle may be positioned over the discharge end of the barrel 5, the slots being brought into registry with the pins 6, whereupon the nozzle is given a slight turn locking the nozzle to the barrel.
Secured to the barrel 5 is a hook member 10 which lies along one surface of the barrel,
and disposed in spaced relation therewith, so that the hook member will clamp the belt of the user, if it is desired to support the gun by the belt. The barrel 5 is formed with threads 11 adapted to receive the cap 12 which closes one end of the barrel as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing. This cap is formed with a central opening to accommodate the plunger rod 13 which has connection with the plunger 14 in any suitable and well known manner, so that movement of rod 13 through the barrel 5, will tend to eject material from the nozzle 7.
The plunger rod also includes a handle portion 15 which has connection with the main portion of the rod as by means of the link member 16, whereby the handle portion may be moved from a position as shown by Figure l of the drawing, to a position as in dicated in dotted lines. Thus it will be seen that the operating handle of the rod may be moved out of the way, eliminating any possibility of the person carrying the gun, accidentally discharging the contents thereof.
The hook member 10 has a ring section 18 adapted to be positioned over the body portion 5 and engaged by the cap 12 to force the ring member into engagement with the pins 19 carried on the barrel. This ring member also includes an upwardly ex tending finger 20 which has a portion thereof contacting with a cap providing a hook member for the arm ring 21 which may be positioned over the finger 20 if it is desired to carry the gun on the arm.
A spring member 22 is carried on the rod 13, and is disposed between the plunger 14 and the inner surface of the cap 12 so that the spring is placed under tension when the gun is filled, and the plunger is moved to the limit of its rearward movement.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
A grease gun comprising a barrel, a removable cap for closing one. end of the bar rel, pins extending laterally from the barrel and disposed adjacent to one end of the cap, a-hook member including a ring, said ring adapted to be positioned over the barrel between the pins and cap, and said cap 10 adapted to force the ring member into close engagement with pins to secure the hook to the barrel.
