To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES` R. PrLsoN and Lowrs ZOLL, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and both 'residents of Vanguard, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Doorcheclrs, of which the 'following is `a specification. i
This invention relates to improvements in automatic door checks, and has for its objects to provide a means of automatically closing a door, to providea means whereby a door 'may be held in open position, to provide a spring-actuated element designed to be carried by the doorframe and be actuated by an arm connected to the door.
Furtherobjects are to provide an automatic door check which consists of two L- shaped elements, one being slidably mounted on the other and carrying a cani race, a vertical shaft extending between the two l..- shaped members and carrying a cam member designed to be held in engagement with the cam race by means of a spring coiled around the shaft. i i j i Further objects are to provide a means whereby the door may be held open at any desired angle, and which consists of providing a corrugated surface on the cam race.
Still further objects are to provide an automatic door check which is simple hin construction, not liable to go out of repair, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform they functions required of them. i y f 1n 4the drawings :y y

, A represents the improved automatic door check which consists of an inverted L-shaped member 10 yprovided with a threaded orifice 11y which engages the shank of a tightening bolt 12whicheXtends through a longitudinal slot 13 provided in the vertical arm of an L-shaped sliding element 1K1. The two karms of the sliding element 14 may be reinforced by means of the braces 15, and the horizontal arm thereof is provided `with a sleeve 16 which is square in cross section, as clearly shown in Figure 5. f,
The L-shapedelement 14 is designedto be ksecurely held to the L-shaped member 10 by means of a tightening bolt 12 co-acting with a second means, which will be described hereinafter. Extending through the Vbore 17 of the sleeve 16 is a vertical shaft 18, the upper end of which extends through an oriice provided in the horizontal arm of the L-shaped member 10, and` thetwo ends of they vertical shaft 18 are each formed with a screw-threaded shank 19 and`20. Engaging the top end ofthe vertical shaft 18 is an enlarged apertured portion .21 ofan arm 22 which is connected at its free end to a small connecting arm 23, as shown at 24, and the arm 23 `has its free end suitably boltedy to a clamping member 25 which consists of adiscprovided with a pair of apertured ears according to the well-known construction. This disc or clamp 25 is designed'to be fastened to the door in connection with which this automatic check is tovbe used.
Inserted on top of the enlarged portion 21 and engaging the threaded shanlr19 at the top of the vertical shaft 18 is a plate 26 rwhich is offset as at 27, and the offset portion is provided with a square orifice designed to register with asimilar orifice 28 provided in the horizontal armv of the L-shaped ymember 10, and whichy square orices are designed to 1be engaged by a long bolt 29 formed with a head 30 which is square in cross section. i
The lower end of the bolt 29 is threaded and extends through an orifice 31 formed inthe horizontal arm of the L-shapedv element 14, and which'is designedto be securely held thereto by means of a wingedV a predetermined position relative to the L-shaped member 10. f
A C-shaped element or arm 33, which has its twoY ends apertured and designedV to engage the threaded slianks 19 and 2O of the vertical shaft 18 is provided, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, The C-vsliaped arm 33 extends through a slot 34 provided in the arm 22 and is thus caused to move together with the arm` 22 when the same is caused to'pivot by the movement of the door.
The arm 33 is retained on the shank 19 by means of a washer 35 and nut 36, while its lowerV end is retained on the shank 2O by the nut 37. The vertical shaft 18 is provided intermediate of its length with a cani member 38 which may he keyed thereon or Y formed integral therewith, as desired. The

' A cam race is provided on the top edge of the sleeve 40, which is formed with a square bore 41 designed to be engaged by the square sleeve 16 which is formed on the horizontal arm of the sliding element 14. The top edge of this sleeve V40, which is carried by the horizontal arm of the element 14, has a portion which is horizontal as shown at 42 and an oblique part 43 of V-shape and formed with a sudden drop 44 which is located at the apeX of the V.
This cam race is designed to co-act with the lug or cam proper r39 ofthe cam member 38 on the operation of the door.V y
Coiled around the vertical shaft 18 and bearing at-its lower endl against the'top face of the cam member 38 is a coil spring 45 Whichrbears at its top end against a washer 46 bearing against a horizontal member of theV L-shap'ed' member 10 and provided with ball bearings 47. If desired, the coil spring 45 maybe suitably housed by a covering 48 which is provided with a telescoping portion 49 designed to slide over the portion 48 when the spring 45 is compressed, owing to the action of the cani 39 on the cam race 43.
If desired, the horizontal arm of theV L-shaped member 10 may be reinforced by means of the braces 50 similarjto the braces 15 Vused in reinforcing the arms of the L-shaped element 14.
When this improved automatic door check is in use, the L-shaped member, which carries the working parts of the automatic check, is fastened as at 51 to the door frame or adjacent to the door,fand the clamp 25 carried by the arms 22 and 23 is fastened Then the arm 22 is rigidly connected to the vertical shaft ,21 and is in engagement with the C-shaped arm 33, which is rigidly connected to thel threaded Shanks 19 and V20 of the'vertical shaft, it
will be obvious that, on the arm 22 being pivoted bythe operation of the door, the vertical shaft 18 will also be rotated at the same angle and the cam member 38, which is integral or keyed to the vertical shaft 18, will be caused to rotate, and the lug 39 thereof ascending the incline 44 of the cani race 43 will raise and thereby compress the spring 45.
llhen the door is released, the lug 39 of the cam member'will slide down on the inoline 43 and will be forced down by the action of the expanding spring 45. The sudden drop 44 is provided in the cam race 43 so that the lug 39 will suddenly drop to its normal position and force the door to close. When it is desired to retain the door in open position, the door is forcedopen until the lug 39 comes into engagement with the horizontal portion 42 of the cam member, when the spi-ing 45 will' be held in compressed position on account of thecam member being unable to fall back to its normal position.v
ln the case of very heavy doors, the cam lug 39 may be formed so as to extend to the side of the side of the cam sleeve 40, and a roller 52 will be provided on the inner side of the lug 39 Vwhich will be in engagement with the inclined surface of the cam race 43. Y
When it is desired to retain the door in open position Without having it' wide open, a special cam race'is formed which consists of the sleeve 53 which is exactly similar to the sleeve 40 and isformed at itsupper edge with an inclined Ycam shank 54r provided with corrugations 55. In this case, when the roller 52 has been caused to ascend the incline 54 of the cam race and is in bearing engagement with one of the corrugations, it-

An automatic door` cheek comprising a supporting member, mounted on the supporting member and having a lateral extension, a shaft extending through the extension and the supporting member, a cam member on the shaft, a cam race on the extension, loosely engaging the shaft, a roller on the cam member engaging the cam race, a coil spring on the shaft, an arm rigidly connected to the shaft designed to be fastened 'to a door, and a C-shaped element rigidly engaging the shaft and extending through a slot in the arm.
3. An automatic door check comprising a supporting member, a sliding element slidably mounted on the supporting element a sliding element' through a slot and pin arrangement, a shaft extending through the extension and the supporting member, acam member on the shaft, a cam race on the extension, loosely engaging the shaft, a roller on the cam member engaging the cam race, a coil spring on the shaft, an arm rigidly connected to the shaft designed to be fastened to a door, and a C-shaped element rigidly engaging the h:shaft and extending through a slot in the arm.
