My invention to railway gates olf the lcind that are used at level crossings or' roads and Streets.
Dit such crossings it is customary to pro ride a hoorn erected on each side oi the track in such a manner that when the hoonis are telled down across the street or road they will practically preventthe passine oi' any vehicle across the railway trac-lr.

This treadle 43 is journaled as at 46 in the bracket 47 rigidly secured to rail 12 in such a manner, that the treadle 43 with its inner side lies along the head of the rail 12.
It will now be evident that, when a train approaches in the direction of arrow X on track 10, the car wheels 49 running on the rail 12 will depress the toe 44 of the treadle 43, thereby pullingr on rod 41 swinging the bell crank lever 40 in the same direction and pulling connecting rod 38 in direction of arrow Z, causing a pulling downwardly on the free end 26 of the lowering spring through the intermediacy of parts 34, 31 and 30. Before the approach of the train the booms are supposed to be raised and, being balanced, a slight downward pressure on the free end 26 of the. lowering spring 24v will now cause the long arm 20 to' be felled down across the street'or road which crosses the tracks and in this inanner close the crossing. v
The other track 11 has similar connec tions between the elbow lever 34 and its treadle 43l and parts 38, 39a, 40, 41a and 47 a all corresponding to the parts 38, 39, 40, 41 and 47 in the above describedl connection.
Accordingly when the booms are raised and a train approaches on track 11 in direction of arrow Y, the ear wheels will depress the treadle 43al and by means of the enumerated connection parts will also lower the power boom 17.
As best seen in Figs 1, 2 and 4 the two booms l17 and 19 are positively connected by means of a link 50 engaging with its upper end an aperture 51 behind the ournal 16 that is in the short arm 21. The lower end`of the link 50 engages a horizontal arm 52 of a bell crank 53 fulcrum'ed as at 54 in bearing 55 secured to the bottom of the standard 15. The passive boom 19 is similarly provided with a link 56 connected with the horizontal arm 57 of a bell crank 58 fulcrumed in a bearing 59 secured to the bottom of the standard 18. The down H wardly directed arms of bell cranks 53 and 58 are connected by means of a rod 60 which runs all the way across both tracks and preferably below the rails in order to have free movement in its length direction.
It will now be understood that directly the power boom 17 swings whether up or down, this movement is communicated through the parts 50, 53, 60, 58 and 56 from the power boom 17 to the passive boom 19. j In this manner the passive boom will always follow the movements of the power boom 17.
The free end 29 of the raising spring 27 has a link attached thereto, the lower end of which engages With the bar or lever 66, which corresponds to the double armed lever 31 already described and the other connecting parts 67, 68, 69, 70, 71 and 72 correspond in all respects with the already described parts 34, 38, 40, 41, 47, and 43 in the same order.
It will now be evident that a train entering from the left end of track 10 as seen in Fig. 1 andv running in direction of arrow X will pass out at the other end of the track over the treadle 72 situated at that end and ldepress the treadle and through the'inteiinediary of the connecting parts enumerated actuate the link 65 and free end 29 of the spring 27 to pull on the latter and in this manner raise the boom into upright position. Similarly a train having entered from the right hand end of track 11 in Fig; l and running in direction of arrow Y will leave Vthe track over the treadle 72a situated at this end thereof and depress the same, whereupon the intermediary connecting parts a, 69, 68a all corresponding to the previously described parts, carrying the saine numerals will actuate the lever 66 and link 65 to pulll down the end 29 of the rasing spring 27.
The device as described above explains the.
. crossing' and the actuating treadle is about fifty feet or in other words the distance between the approaching treadle and the lfeaving treadle would be about one hundred eet.
Having thus described the invention, what 4is vclaimed as new is:
1. rA railway gate comprising a boom, a'
standard therefor, a horizontal journal in f said standard, said boom having a long arm' and a short arm balanced substantially around the axis of the journal and means for swinging the boom in a vertical plane actuated by a passing vehicle wheel, said means including treadles fulcrumed on a wheel track and having a toe normally projecting above the same, springs secured with one end to the long and short arms of said boom respectively and the intermediary portion of each spring coiled around said journal and suitable connection between said treadle and said springs.
2. A railway gate comprising a boom, a
standard therefor, a horizontal journal in said standard7 said boom having a long arm and a short arm balanced substantially around the axis of the journal and means for lowering andraising said boom aotuated by a passim vehicle wheel; said lowu ering means including a treadle fulornmed on a Wheel track and having a toe projecting above the same, a sprin having one end secured to the long erm o I said boom adjacent said journal, iis :free end extending .along the other arm of the boom and its inter mediary portion coiled around said journal and a series of links and hell crenle connecting said treadle with said free end of the spring.
