afi neanbafiiea May 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JASPER EDIsoN Holmes and Gnoneu BARNARD VVoLr, citizens of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crossing Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a crossing pro- 'teotor for railroads, the general object of the invention being to provide automatic means for lowering gates or other barriers upon the approach of a train and to remove the barriers after the train passes the crossing.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement. of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail,
reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a railroad track and crossing showing the invention in use.
Figure 2isa plan View.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2. V
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 of Figure 2. .7
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are detail views.
In these views, A indicates the track and, B the crossing. In carrying out our invention we arrange gates 1 at the crossing which are pivoted to the posts 2 and which are normally held in raised @position by the weights 3. A latch 1 is arranged for holding each gate in lowered position after the gates have been lowered, this latch being so arranged that it will be struck by atrain as the train is passing the crossing so that the latch will be moved to releasing position to permit the weights to raise the gates. This latch is so formed that its upper end will pass under the weighted end of the gate when the same is lowered so as to prevent the return or opening movement of the gate, the latch being spring impelled. The other end of the latch will then be in a position close to the one of the rails of the track where it will be struck'and depressed by the wheels of a train, this depression causing the latch to swing out from under the gate from PATENT OFFICE.

and thus permit the weight to raise the gate. A pedal lever 5 is arranged adjacent one ail of the track a distance from the crossing so that it will be depressed by the wheels of a train. This pedal lever engages a second lever 6 which is pivoted intermediate its ends as at 7 and has its other end connected by a link 8 with a third lever 9 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to the support 10. The other end of this lever 9 is attached to a chain 11 which passes over a pulley 12 on a post 13 and the other end of the cable is connected with a gate, as shown at 1 1, in such a manner that when the pedal lever 5 is depressed the cable will be pulled upon to move the gates to lowered position and thus prevent a vehicle or pedestrian passing over the track at the crossing. The latch 4 will hold the gates in lowered position until the train reaches the crossing when a part on the train will strike the latch and release the same so that the weights can raise the gates so that the crossing will be free after a train passes over the same. The cable passes over suitable guiding pulleys 15 which are suitably supported.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided simple and effective means whereby a train may automatically lower the gates before the train reaches the crossing and will actuate the latch means for permitting the gates to raise again as the train passes the crossing.
If desired, a lamp 16 can be used on each gate and an alarm 17 can also be provided, the circuit of which is closed by the approach of a train so that persons will be warned that the gates are about to be lowered and thus be prevented from being caught between the gates at the crossing.
It-is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
W'e desire it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
that we claim is Railroad crossing protecting means comprising gates, weighted means for holding the gates in raised position, a spring pressed latch member having its upper end adapted to pass under the weighted end of a gate when the gate is lowered .to prevent the weight from opening the gate again, the
p dal l the system to the gates and flexible means for connecting guid ng means 1 for the flexible means.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signw lures.
