ANSON H. BIGELOI'V, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN. MACHINES FOR MAKING FENCE-PICKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14?,513, dated February 24, 1874 application filed August 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANsoN H. BIG-BLOW,
of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Fencelickets, of which the following is a specification: 4
This invention relates to certain improvements in machines for forming pickets or palings, by which the work is performed with greater accuracy and expedition than heretofore. The invention consists in the arrange ment, in respect to a frame, of two superposed revolving heads or shafts, located one in ad vance of the other, and both carrying a series of cutters or chisels, of various forms, for shaping the picket heads, said parts being combined with a sliding block or carriage, which receives the picket to be dressed, and serves as a medium for alternately presenting the same to the action of the two cutter-heads.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a machine for dressing pickets constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line a: .r of Fig. 1. Fig. '3 representsa picket and the several outters arranged to show their cutting action; Fig. 4., a view of one of the cutters, showing the advanced point of the same; Fig. 5, a modification of my invention.
The frame for receiving and supporting the operative mechanism, designated by the let ter A, is of any size and construction, and has, journa-led in its vertical side standards, a pair of horizontal shafts or heads, B B, which are arranged at different elevations, one in. advance of the other, this arrangement of the shafts being necessary in view of the fact that the points of the cutters would interfere it the shafts were arranged directly above each other. Each shaft or headjcarries a series of cutters, G, which are distributed over the different faces of the shaft, and at different planes in respect to each other, so that at least two cutters will be in operation at the same moment.
It will be perceived that each cutter is attached to the shaft or head at an angle of about forty-five degrees, which is of great importance, as the cutters thus act as chisels, producing a drawing out, whether the edges In Fig. 5 is shown a head or cuttershaft I which is provided with forward extensions and inclined bearing-surfaces, upon which the cutters are secured, the attaching-shank being, in this instance, dispensed with.
In order to produce a more perfect'drawing cut, I shape the cutting-edge of the cutter as clearly shown in Fig. 4, to'throw one or both of its points in advance of the center, thus causing one edge to enter the wood first, for
the purpose stated. In proper relation to the cutter-shafts, at either side of the frame, is located a earriage,'block, or work-holder, H,which is provided with dovetail or other tongues, I, sliding in grooves in the ways K, located in the center of the frame. The picket or paling is entered in said block or carriage edgewise,
to cause the end to be pointed and dressed and brought in proper relation to the cutters.
By operating the two cutter-sh afts alternately, through the medium of a suitable motive power, one edge of the picket is first dressed or shaped, and then the picket is sub- .jected to the action of the second. cutter, for
shaping its opposite edge, by sliding ormoving the picket-holder laterally until it is brought in proper relation to the cutter-shaft.
1 claim as my invention- In a machine for forming pickets, the cutter-heads B 3, with the cutters 0, arranged one in inlvanee of the other for alternate operation on the picket, in combination with the sliding carriage H, arranged in the frame A between the cutter-heads, for alternately presenting the-pickets to the cutters, all con structed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I' have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of .July, 1873.
Witnesses: ANSON H. BIenLow.
