i Bev it known that I, ERNEST S. Ron, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Plymouth, in the count 1 of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Air Guns,
of which the following is a specification, :reference beinghad vtherein to the accompanying drawings. p
:Theinvention relates toguns and refers more particularly to air guns or rifles. One 4of the objects of the invention is to provide a gun with means .for locking the dischargingmechanism from accidental movement .when the trigger is incocked position, this locking means being dependent for its release upon movement of the trigger. An-
other object is the provision of a gun in .which the trigger itself is automatically locked when in cocked position whereby the .plunger of the discharging mechanism is locked from accidental movement. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of vparts as more fully hereinafterV set forth.

1 is the stock of the air gunand 2 the barrel section thereof. The stock has at its forward end the casing which forms the housing` for the discharge mechanism including the air compression chamber 4, the plunger 5 and the coil spring 6 for actuating the plunger in one direction. The trigger mechanism 7 is also housed within the casing. 8 is astationary abutment securedin the forward end of the-air compression chamber V4 and having the axial opening 9 thereinV forthe passage of the air.
The `barrel section is pivoted to the forward endof the casing at 10 and the break down movement-of this barrel section about .its pivot is .utilized for compressing the coil .spring nand cockingthe air gun. The barrel .section has the gdependingside flanges 11 at .its Arear end .and the Voafsing `has the depending side flanges 12, the adjacent endsof which are pivotally connected together at 10. The rod 13 which is preferably liJ-shaped is pivotally connected at its ends to the depending side langes 11 and its base 14 eX- tends through the parallel longitudinally extending slots 15 in the depending side flanges 12 and is adapted to engage the down-turned end 16 of the shank secured to the plunger 5, the arrangement being such that the plunger is longitudinally moved backward to compress the coil springl upon the breaking-down movement of the barrel section. The trigger mechanism 7 is also moved upon `the breaking-down movement of the barrel section to cocked position, at which time it engages the downturned end ,16 of the plunger shank to retain the latter in its rearwardly adjusted position.
For the purpose of locking the discharge mechanism from movement when the gun has been cocked, I form the trigger mechanism 7 of the inner member 17 and the outer member-or trigger 18 which are pivoted at 19 between the depending side flanges 12 of the casing 3, these members having at their forward ends the upwardly extending latches 20 and 21 respectively which are engageable with the downturned end 16 of the plunger shank. The Outer member` er trigger 18 is preferably formed ofa sheet metal stampingv and has the side walls 22 on opposite sides of the inner member 17 and the downwardly extending finger portion 23 have a rounded front face. The side walls are formed with shoulders forming the latch 21. To permit of movement of the outer member or trigger 18 longitudinally of the casing and relative to the inner member 17, its side walls are formed with the elongated openings 24 which are slidably engaged in by the pivot 19 of the trigger mechanism. The inner member 17 has a fixed axis of movement about this pivot and is rocked from the outer member or trigger 18 by the pin 25 extending' between the side walls of the outer member or trigger and 'slidably engaging in the longitudinally extending elongated opening 26 in the forward end of the inner member. lVth this arrangement the outer member or trigger can rock the inner member about its pivot and can be moved longitudinally relative to the inner member. The outer member or trigger has the notch 27 iii-its front face which is adapted to be engaged in by the transverse flanges 2S at the lower ends of the Side flanges 12 of the casing` when the gun has p ivardly extending shoulders 29 .formed upon the side Walls of the outer member or trig ger. After the triggerv mechanism has been moved to cocked position, the notch in the front face of the outer member or trigger is in registration With the transverse flanges of the casing side fiangesand the outer member or trigger is 4automatically moved longitudinally of the casing to bring these transverse flanges into engagement in the notch by means of the coil spring 30 secured between kthe rear ends of the side Walls of the outer member or trigger and the forward end of the stock 1.
1n operation, the barrel section 2 is broken down and the plunger 5 moved rearwardly andthe trigger 23 moved to cocked position by means V(of the. rod 1B pivotally connected lto the barrel section and engag ing the depending end 16 of theplunger shank. The parts are then inthe-position shown in Figure 2 with the notch 27 in the outer member or trigger 18 of the trigger mechanism in alignment with the transverse flanges 2S upon the casing. Upon returning the barrel section to its shooting po-` sition, the depending end 16 of the plungerv shank is allowed to move slightly forward to engage the latch 20 of the inner member 17 of the trigger mechanism. This permits the coil spring to force the outer member or trigger 18 forwardly to bring the transverse flanges of the casing into engagement in the notch in the front face of the outer member or trigger. The discharge mechanism of the gun is now locked from accidental disengagement. To release the outer member or trigger and permit of the 'rocking of the trigger mechanism about its pivot. the trigger is first pulled back longitudinally of the casing to release the shoulder forming the upper edge of the notch in the outer member or trigger from the casing transverse flanges. Continued rearward movement of the outer member or trigger then compels rocking of both the outer member or trigger and the inner member about the pivot of the trigger mechanism Which releases the depending end of the plunger shank from the latches formed upon both the outer member or trigger and the inner member.
From the above description it will be readily seen that I have provided an air gun of simple construction in which the discharge mechanism is locked from accidental disengagement from the trigger mechanism and in which the locking means is dependent for its release uponmovement of the trigger. i Q

In a gun, the combination with discharging mechanism, ot a trigger having a rotary and a linear movement tor controliing said discharging mechanism movable to cocked position, means tor holding said mechanism :trom discharge when said trigger is in cocked position, and means for locking said discharging mechanism from accidental discharge when said trigger is in cocked position, said locking means being dependent for its release upon movement ot said trigger.
