htlld DAVID M. WATSON, OF MCKINLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
LID SUPPORT.
Application led January 25, 1923. SerialNo. 614,733.
T o all whom t may concern Be it known thatl, DAvm M. WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at McKinley, in the county ot Montgoinery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid Supports, oi' which the followingr is a specification.
My' invention relates to a lid support adapted for use on cabinets, chests, desks or `like objects having a hinged member, The object is to provide a support of a siin ile construction which will automatically all into a 'supporting position when the lid is raised and which will be automatically released trom its supporting position by a continued raising of the lid and permit it to he lowered.
vvThis object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference beingr had to the accompanying drawings in Which- Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section of a cabinet having my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 an enlarged view of .Figure 1 illustrating my invention'in a supporting position,
Figure 3 a section on l, and
Figure l a fragmentary perspective view of the support.
I have illustratedmy iid snpport as applied to a phonograph cabinet. -Reterring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the cabinet and 2 the lid. My support 3 is pivoted to the lid at 4 and includes a slot 5 terminating in an oblong ol'iening G. An oblong guide block?, smaller than opening 6, is disposed therein in such manner as to leave a continuous space, or guidevvay, 8 between the wall of the opening' and the periphery of the block. A pin 9 is secured to the body of the cabinet and the support ing member is so mounted that slot 5 and .gnidevvay 8 may slide thereon. A lateral projection 10 on the side wall of the opening and a notch 11 in the guide form an offset 12 in the gnideway which serves to limit" the raising ofA the lid and support it in' aised position. A strip spring 13 closes the entrance to the upper run 1K1 of the guideway and dedects pin 9 into the lower run line 3-3 of Figure 15 when raising the iid. Any suitable means may be provided to hold the guide inr position preferably a casing 1G having depressions 17 through which are passed screws or other securingr means for the guide. The casing,r may e secured to the su port in any suitable manner.
Vlien the lid is closed, pin 9 will be in the upper end of slot 5. Raising' the lid will cause the slot to travel upwardlvV relatively to pin 9 until it engages spring 13 which will cause the lower run 15 of guide- Way S to travel on the pin until the pin abuts projection 10 which acts as a. stop JFor the 'raising of the lid so that support 3 will swing:r by gravity until notch 11 engages pin 9. The support is thus automatically swung into a supporting position. To lowes` the lid it is irst raised until'pin 9 engages a point 16, at the end oi' 'lower run 15 of the support, which limits the raising n'iovement. (ravity will have a tendency to swingr the support and cause the upper run 1li oi guideway 8 to travel on pin 9. The lid is then lowered. Duringr this movement, upper run`1f1 of the gulden/'ay will slide on pin 9 until it engages strip spring,r 13 which, due to its flexibility and free movementj permits the pin to pass out of run le into slot 5.
By constructing a support in this manner, the support will swing by gravity into the supporting position and from the support ing position to permit lowering of the lid.
While l have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will he understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departingy from the spirit thereof, and hence do not limit myself-to the precise construction set forth, but consider that l am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as' fairly come within the scope of theA appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is r-- 1. The combination with a Aother object'having a lid and a tixed pin .lbf a supporting rin pivoted to the lid an havingr a slot terminating in a continuous cabinet or gnideway having an offset in its lower run7 the slot and guideivay being adapted to slide on the pin, and a strip spring" adapted to doioct the pin Yfrom ih@ siot into the lower run of the guidewuy und permit it to pass from the upper run into the sini.
2. The Con'ibinuiion with 11.*. minuut or other object having u iid und :1 'ixod pin, of an arm pivoted to the iid und having :L slot terminating into nu opening; u iatrrzd projection on the side will o-I the opening; a guide block having a notch, mounted in the opening and spaced theroironi with the notch adjacent the projection to provide a continuous guidewuy around the block, the slot und guidewuy boing' udapioci Lo siido on tho pin; means for deieoting thu pin into the lower run of the guide-way und permitting it to pass out of tho upper run., and means for holding` tho guido in posi tion. v
3. The combination with :i Cabinet or other obgect, having a lid and :i fixed pm,
or au arm pivoeci to the iid and havin@ sio terminating into :in opening; n ignora projection on the side Wadi, of the openni u guido bloeit having a notch, mounted in ho opening und Spzioed therefrom with the iinesso ELIZABETH GARBE, ill-IAS. E. Poms.
